McKamey Manor in Summertown, Tennessee may lay claim to being the world’s scariest haunted house. It’s so scary that no one has ever completed it — but if you do, you’ll win $20,000.

The haunted house has several eye-popping preconditions. Contestants who want to enter must get a letter from their doctor asserting they are physically and mentally fit, and there’s a drug test day-of. Signing the 40-page contract alone takes three to four hours. Oh, and you have to have medical insurance because you’ll probably get hurt.

“I’m a very straight laced conservative guy, but here I run this crazy haunted house that people think is this torture factory, fetish factory,” McKamey told local news WFLA. “All of these things that it’s not, but people believe that based upon the films that I have made.”

McKamey concocts each “show” for every individual contestant who visits, cooking up particular stunts and tasks suited to their particular fears. It’s been featured on the Netflix show Dark Tourism and Haunters: The Art of the Scare.

McKamey is adamant that nothing weird goes on in the manor, despite a report from if they last that long. McKamey insists it’s a more of a “mental game” between him and contestants, which he wins using hypnosis.

“When I use the hypnosis I can put you in a kitty pool with a couple inches of water and tell you there’s a great white shark in there, and you’re gonna think there’s a shark in there,” he told WFLA. “And so, when you have that kind of power over people, and have them do and see things that you want them to see, then they can leave here thinking it really happened, and they’ll go to the authorities and say, ‘oh, whatever,’ and I have to come back and show the footage and say, ‘it didn’t go that way at all.""

There’s also a required two-hour video you must watch if you think other people are sissies and you’re made of stronger stuff. “And Then There Were None” is one hour and 48 minutes of people giving up the haunted house, telling the camera and future visitors “you really don’t want to do this.”

If you think you’ve got what it takes, you can contact McKamey online to set up your own terrifying tour. For something a little less terrifying, here are houses with haunted pasts you can visit without signing away your life.

At some point, it probably happens to everyone who has a basement. Too much water. Sometimes an old water pipe gives up the ghost and ruptures, or occasionally, nature asserts itself and redirects the nearby river into your basement. Even worse, a flooded septic system could back up into the basement. So now what?

First, water conducts electricity, so do not take even one step into a flooded basement unless the electricity is turned off at its source. If you are fortunate, your circuit breaker panel will be on the first floor, and you can cut the power for the basement while retaining electricity upstairs that you can use to power a pump. (Remember to keep the extension cord and the pump’s power cord out of the water.)

If the circuit panel is in the basement, call the power company and have them turn the whole house’s power off, either directly or remotely, at the meter.

Next, figure out the source of the flood, and whether it has stopped. It doesn’t make sense to try to remove the water if it’s still pouring in. If the area surrounding the house is flooded, you’ll have to wait until the water levels recede.

If you still have electricity, there are a variety of pumps you can use to purge the space. Many basements have a sump pump in place, but if the electricity is out, the sump pump can’t do its job. But before you pump, here’s a caveat from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), in reference to extreme flooding situations:

“The weight of saturated soil applies pressure on basement walls and floors and can cause them to buckle inward or collapse. If water is allowed to enter the basement, the hydrostatic pressure becomes equalized and the walls are much less likely to fail. “

In other words, as dismaying as it seems, in a major flood you actually want water in the basement, at least for a while. FEMA goes on to recommend pumping out the basement one foot of water at a time, with a waiting period of 24 hours in between. If the water level stabilizes or continues to drop, you can increase the pumping rate. If you can see any foundation damage caused by the flood, stop pumping.

If your sump pump is still operable, it will do the job, albeit slowly. To speed things up, you can rent or buy a portable submersible pump. It should be equipped with a screen that prevents the intake from clogging.

Starting at around $100 you can buy a model that pumps about 1,600 gallons per hour or splurge on one that will extract upwards of 4,000 gallons per hour.

If the electricity is out, consider renting a generator and a pump. Better yet, you can probably rent or buy a gasoline-powered pump that has intake and outflow hoses. These are set up outside—all you have to do is feed the intake hose down into the flooded area and start the motor.

And the remaining water that’s still down there? Puddles can be cleaned up with a mop. If your electricity is still out, take advantage of the cordless universe, which also extends to wet/dry vacs.

Once the electricity is back on, if the water isn’t too deep, a wet/dry vac will make short work of it. Once you have most of the water up, you can complete the drying process with fans and/or dehumidifiers. (You may be able to rent industrial-strength fans, too.) It’s also a good idea to open any doors and windows to increase airflow.

Once the water is gone, you’ll have to toss out all carpeting, cardboard boxes, and anything else that got soaked and can’t be sanitized. All that waterlogged material is a perfect breeding ground for mold. If there’s drywall or insulation in the basement, it should also be torn out, to at least a foot above the high-water mark.

What used to be a one-day kids" holiday of candy and homemade costumes has morphed into a seasonlong commercial juggernaut that has growing numbers of adults forking over cash to get scared out of their wits.

Haunted houses, once a homespun hobby for dedicated horror fans that netted maybe a few million dollars a year in sales, has mushroomed into a $300 million industry. Today, there are around 2,500 haunted attractions worldwide, most in the United States, said Patrick Konopelski, president and owner of Shocktoberfest in Sinking Spring, Pa., and president of the Haunted Attraction Association.

Indeed, Americans plan to spend nearly $7 billion on Halloween this fall. And about 20 percent of the 158 million consumers who plan to celebrate Halloween say they will visit haunted attractions this year, according to the National Retail Federation"s annual Halloween survey.

Chances are they"ll be leaving the kiddies behind. In tandem with the rest of Halloween, haunted houses have grown bigger and more elaborate. Hollywood-style production ramps up the fear factor, and attractions are combining haunted houses with more grown-up activities like rock concerts, mud runs, paintball battles—even a strictly adults-only underwear haunted house tour.

"In the beginning, people would joke about spaghetti for brains and grapes for eyeballs," said haunted house producer Steve Kopelman. "Now you have animatronics [and] dramatic advances in technology … so you get the realism you couldn"t have until the last decade."

"Haunted houses seem like the holiday brought to life," said Joseph Szemiot, a 37-year-old New Jersey resident who said he has traveled as far as Massachusetts to visit a haunted house. "As Halloween becomes more popular and more commercialized, I guess it paid off for them to make the haunted houses better and better."

The haunted house is "a completely different animal than it used to be," said Chris Stafford, co-owner of 1331 Entertainment Group, a brand that runs haunted houses in Denver, San Antonio and Phoenix, and just opened a fourth in McAllen, Texas. "It"s a form of live entertainment the same way a play is. The production value is high and the entertainment value is high."

"We create Hollywood-style sets, our makeup crew is all professional makeup artists," said Michael Jubie, who owns Headless Horseman Hayrides & Haunted Houses in Ulster Park, N.Y., with his wife, Nancy. "We have seen a steady increase," he said. "People that enjoy the Halloween season and the fall season will come out for that entertainment …. Here, they"re part of the movie."

On the opening night of the Headless Horseman, crowds lined up outside the gates and milled around a cluster of outdoor Halloween-themed gift shops. Visitors posed for pictures in front of the park"s signature ghoul, some startled when the animatronics kicked on and the horse reared as its rider brandished his head.

"It"s harder and harder to scare mature adults," he pointed out. Tackling this challenge led him to come up with one of the more chilling—not to mention chilly—tweaks to standard haunted-house fare.

Since launching the website a few weeks ago, "We"ve been inundated with inquiries" and sold upwards of 100 tickets already, Konopelski said. Visitors keep their shoes on, but strip down to their undies for the roughly 15-minute tour. (Originally, the plan was to let visitors go through the tour naked, but local officials shot that down.)

"Within the last three years, they"ve become aggressive. They"ve become an extreme sport," said Timothy Haskell, creative director and co-owner of Nightmare, a New York City haunted house. "They"re all mirroring our culture in the same exact way. We all want extreme everything."

The Driller’s Console I/O is connected to one remote rack, located in the console and connected by dual Ethernet Fiber optic cable to one Optical Link MOXA module, also located in the console, which convert the signals for use by the fiber optic cable running to the PLCs. Below is an overview of the signals exchanged between this console and the PLC system.

The console generator shutdown and SCR shutdown are hard-wired to E-Stop control relays. Output contacts of these relays are hard-wired to each generator breaker or SCR breaker to open the breakers (UVR).
