mud agitator gearbox factory
Derrick mud agitators include an explosion-proof, “C” faced motor, reduction gearbox (helical-bevel gears for horizontal agitators or all helical gears for vertical units), impeller, and shaft with assembly bushings. Motors range from 5 to 30 HP and may be supplied in several power configurations.
Attaching the motor directly to the gearbox protects correct alignment that can increase bearing life and provides 95 percent efficiency in power transfer to the impeller. Using this superior design surpasses standard worm drive gear assemblies by 30 percent, allowing Derrick agitators to do the same work at far less horsepower. By unitizing the motor and gearbox, weight and space requirements are reduced. Horsepower, mechanical configuration, impeller diameter, and shaft length are customized to tank dimensions and maximum mud weights. Available horsepower ratings* are: 5, 7.5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30.
Mud Agitator is also called Mud Tank Agitator and widely used in the mud solids control system. It is installated in slurry storage tanks or mud tank and to prevent drilling fluid solid Particles deposited in the mud tank. Brightway is the famous and professional Mud Agitator Manufacturer and can produce the horizontal Mud Agitator and vertical Mud agitator.
Mud Agitator is used in mud systems to suspend solids and maintain homogeneous mixture throughout the system. A mechanical agitator is driven by an explosion-proof motor, coupled to a gear box that drives the impeller shaft. The impellers (turbines) transform mechanical power into fluid circulation or agitation. The objective is to obtain a uniform suspension of all solids.
Brightway mud agitator features a “C” face motor couple to a rugged oilfield gearbox, which eliminates misalignment and troublesome couplings. This configuration promotes long motor and gearbox bearing life. Please contact with Brightway representative with your tank dimension and your detail requirement. We will recommend the right model with specification about the horsepower, impeller (size, type& quality), and shaft length etc to meet your requirement.
The MAX2000® Agitator features a rugged cast iron gearbox that houses helical bevel gearing. The gear sets are precisely ground to prevent all but the slightest amount of backlash in the gear sets. This feature promotes longer life by eliminating the high impact forces generated when the unit is energized at start-up. Each helical bevel gear stage is 98% efficient. A typical worm gear set is only 85% efficient, since it loses most of its efficiency through the generation of heat.
Internal gears and bearings are lubricated with mineral oil. When the ambient temperature drops below 23ºF or rises above 140ºF, a synthetic lubricant should be substituted. A unique feature of the MAX2000® Agitator is the lower bearing, which can be maintained from the top of the tank. This feature eliminates the need for in-tank inspections of the lower bearing, and also provides a barrier of grease that can be expunged out the lower seal. The lower seals are arranged to accommodate the grease pocket and make for a four-tier layer of protection for the gearing. The end result means the lower bearing stays in contact with good, uncontaminated lubricant at all times. All four of these levels must be breached prior to loss of oil in the gearbox.

The skid mounted MA-RG agitator is compact, and its low profile reduces headroom requirements and provides more layout space on top of the tanks. The gearbox is a triple-reduction helical-bevel gear drive system that reduces the rotational speed of the motor to drive the impeller(s). Up to 95% mechanical efficiency helps reduce horsepower requirements.
Impellers are available with flat blades (radial flow), contour blades (axial flow), and canted blades (radial/axial flow). The impellers are sized according to tank volume and expected duty. Active mud system compartments—such as solids removal sections, mud mixing sections, and slug pits, which need a higher shear force to produce immediate mixing—are another consideration in impeller sizing.
Several types of shafts are offered. Mild steel shafts are cut to length and joined to the gearbox output shaft with a rigid coupling. Solid shafts are keyed at the bottom for impeller height adjustment. Hollow pipe shafts are available for deep tanks. They are supplied in flanged sections and bolted together, making them ideal for limited lifting height.
Mud agitators are highly efficient mud mixing units offered in a wide variety of custom sizes and configurations to accommodate virtually any mud tank. Both horizontal and vertical drive configurations are available for all sizes of mud agitators. The horizontal drive is designed for installations having limited space above the mud tank. The vertical drive agitator employs and all helical gearing system, the horizontal drive utilises a helical bevel system to drive the agitator shaft.
Mud agitators stir a mud slurry to maintain suspension of solids. The agitator is mounted on top of the mud tank and has one or two impellers immersed in the mud slurry. The impeller shaft is directly coupled to an electric drive motor that is available in many different horsepower ratings from 3hp to 30hp.
Each agitator is designed for the specific application, taking into account parameters such as tank size, tank depth and mud characteristics. For vertical configurations the drive motor rotates the impeller shaft through an all helical gear drive. For horizontal designs the motor is connected through a combination of helical and bevel gears. Both designs permit mounting of one or two impellers having either straight or canted blades.
Rotation of the drive motor is transferred to the impeller shaft through a directly coupled gear drive. The drive is a reduction gearbox and is factory assembled to the drive motor. The drive is sized to apply the maximum torque required to produce the design impeller speed of 60 rpm.
Impellers are available in diameters ranging from 20" to 52" to meet the needs of the specific size of mud tanks. The impeller diameter is generally determined by the size of the tank. Larger or deeper tanks employ dual impeller units having a secondary impeller mounted closer to the mud surface. The impeller is mounted on the shaft using a taper lock bushing. A key is inserted in the impeller shaft and locks the impeller to the shaft to prevent rotation.
The straight blade configuration disperses mud laterally while the canted impeller blade adds a vertical component to the mixing process. Canted impeller blades are recommended for near the bottom of tanks more than 5" deep, or where other forces of flow factor may be absent in the tank.
An Agitator is a equipment used in a tank for mixing various process media together. Media include all liquid types, gases & solids (such as salts, powders, granules etc). In summary, it works by rotating an impeller to impart energy to the media which interact and mix. The components of an agitator in general are the motor & gearbox, shaft & impellers selected for the duty.
An Agitator is used for mixing different process media – liquids, gases and solids in chemical addition or Pharmaceutical Ingredients. The agitator imparts energy through mechanical mean by rotating a shaft on which there is an impeller designed specifically for the duty. This could be axial pumping, gas induction, flocculating, high viscosity products, high & low shear mixing etc. An agitator is also used in the Water Industry for adding various chemicals to bring the source water up to drinking water standards
An Agitator is generally made up of a three main components – a shaft with impellers, a mechanical seal and motor with option of gearbox for lower RPM duties.
The agitator is mounted onto the vessel or via a supporting bridge in the water industry. The mechanical seal has a number of options depending on the duty – single/double mechanical seal, dry or wet mechanical seal, gas lift off mechanical seal that is related to the duty involved.
An agitator shaft is connected to the drive unit (motor & gearbox) and where the impellers used for the mixing are welded or bolted onto. There are options for magnetic driven units where there is a hermetic seal as opposed to mechanical.
Agitators can be simplified into Bottom Entry Agitator, Side Entry Agitator and Top entry Agitator Mud Agitator, depending on the duty & scale of the application to be mixed.
90% of Agitators are a Top Entry Agitatorin API / Chemical / Water industries. The main advantages of a Top Entry Agitator is that it can handle a larger variance in viscosities and specific gravities and also the fact that the mechanical seal is not in the liquid.
The remaining 10% include Bottom Entry Agitator, Side Entry Agitator and Bottom Entry Mag Drive Agitator. Milk silos & very large holding tanks use side entry agitators not necessarily for mixing but to keep the process media moving and keep the milk cool while bottom entry agitators are more common in the Biotechnology sector, where it is a magnetic driven unit (see below).
A slurry agitator is often used to keep the solids in suspension to prevent settling out and forming on the base of the vessel or bulk tank before being transferred to the next stage of processing.
RCI (Retreat Curve Impellers): can be used on Glass Lined Tank/Agitators, they offer lower shear than the Straight Blade Turbines with lower power requirements. They are usually used as a Bottom Impeller because they can be positioned very close to the curve of the bottom dish of the Tank, the blades curve upwards and they are also curved towards the end of the blades.
