A Boeing 737 cargo jet has been recovered from a lake after overshooting the runway on landing in France, forcing officials to call in heavy recovery equipment and mobilize over 100 personnel. Nobody was hurt during the ordeal.
The plane, operated by Spain"s Swiftair for Swedish cargo airline West Atlantic, is reported to have been flying a domestic route in France from Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) to Montpellier Airport (MPL) early Saturday morning according to press release. crash has yet been offered.
A brigade of 60 emergency responders rushed to the scene, including water rescue specialists. The crew of three, however, were reportedly uninjured, and the cabin door appears to have remained above the waterline, simplifying the rescue. This left authorities only the plane"s recovery to see through, which meant calling in earthmoving equipment and multiple heavy cranes. Montpellier Airport remained closed to air traffic during the recovery process, forcing Easyjet to cancel its route between Gatwick Airport (LGW) outside London, England, and France.
As of about 6:00 p.m. Sunday, the plane had been recovered from the lake without inflicting any additional damage to its airframe, according to a follow-up press release. Videos uploaded to Twitter show the aircraft being hauled away via heavy truck, likely for investigation, which is underway at the hands of French air safety officials. Operations at Montpellier Airport are planned to resume on Monday afternoon according to @airlivenet on Twitter.
Passengers started screaming as the plane slid down the runway, crossed a road, smashed through a perimeter fence and then crashed into a sandy embankment, according to the passengers’ accounts. The lights went out, and suitcases and bags popped out of the overhead bins and fell onto passengers.
“We just buckled and bumped,” another passenger, Natalie Morales-Hendricks told NBC’s Today show. “It was like being in a car accident. People were screaming. I was screaming, covering my face and hands, and the next thing you know, we’re at a standstill.”
The flight’s six crew members who were not seriously injured helped the passengers make their way off the plane through the emergency exits, and into the rain.“When I came off the aircraft I saw that we were about 10-15 feet from the sea and boulders, so I walked on the beach to the road, where we were picked up by a bus,” Robert Mais, a passenger, told the Jamaican Gleaner newspaper.
Mr. Smith of American Airlines said both engines had come off and that the fuselage had cracked in two places. Passengers told Jamaican newspapers that they could feel rain inside the cabin once the plane came to a halt.
American Airlines would not name the captain and first officer, but said that both were experienced in this aircraft. The captain had nearly 2,700 hours as a captain on the Boeing 737, and the first officer, more than 5,000 hours in that job on that plane, airline officials said.
Airline officials said Tuesday was the first day of work for the pilots in a flight sequence that was supposed to last several days. They took the airplane from Reagan National Airport, across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C., to Miami, departing at 3:37 P.M., seven minutes behind schedule, and then from Miami to Kingston.
Tim Wagner, a spokesman for American, said that he had heard reports that the captain had suffered a minor injury to the arm or wrist, but that none of the cockpit crew or cabin crew appeared to have been seriously injured. “I suspect at minimum they had bumps and bruises like everyone else,” he said.
The airline sent a plane from its Dallas base after midnight, with support personnel. Boeing, which built the plane, also sent representatives to Kingston.

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Officials say a Delta Air Lines flight landing in Savannah overshot the marked runway when it had trouble stopping in heavy rain, but no injuries were reported.
Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Lynn Lunsford says a wet runway appears to have caused Delta flight 339 from Atlanta to skid past the point where it should have stopped at about 12:30 p.m. today. Still, he says the plane stopped within a paved overrun area at the end of the runway.
Delta spokesman Anthony Black says 51 passengers and five crew were on the flight. He says there were no reports of the plane having mechanical problems before it landed.

The A330-300 jet involved in the accident was delivered new to Korean Air in 1998, according to flight tracking website FlightRadar24, which said that other flights to Cebu had diverted to other airports or returned to their origin.
The Cebu airport said on its Facebook page that it had temporarily closed the runway to allow for the removal of the plane, meaning all domestic and international flights were cancelled until further notice.
The airline had a poor safety record at that time but sought outside help from Boeing Co (BA.N) and Delta Air Lines Inc (DAL.N) to improve its standards.
BEIJING (Reuters) - A passenger plane overshot a runway while landing at a new airport in northeast China late on Tuesday, bursting into flames and killing 42 people of 96 on board, the nation’s worst air disaster since 2004.
The accident will be a jolt for China’s fast-growing aviation sector, which has had no major accident in recent years, thanks to stricter safety rules, better training and relatively young fleets of mainly Western-made aircraft.
The Henan Airlines plane crashed at 9.36 p.m. (9:36 a.m. EDT) in Yichun, a remote city of one million in Heilongjiang province surrounded by forests, after flying from provincial capital Harbin, the Civil Aviation Administration of China said.
While the cause of the crash is still being investigated, Caijing magazine cited local rules as saying that Yichun airport is “in principle” not supposed to operate at night.
State media initially said 43 people had died but later revised down the death toll by one. Seven of the 54 survivors were severely injured, Yichun mayor Wang Aiwen was quoted as saying.
“When I looked out the window, I couldn’t see anything. There were no lights at all,” Xinhua quoted survivor Xue Xilai as saying. “Soon after that, the plane bounced heavily on the ground and then broke in two.”
There were 91 passengers, including five children, as well five crew members on board the ERJ-190, built by Brazil’s Embraer, Xinhua said. The passengers appeared to be mainland Chinese, except for one person from Taiwan.
“When the back part of the plane landed, I felt a strong jolt, and then the plane seemed to begin to come apart,” another survivor told state television from his hospital bed.
The report noted that the Communist Party boss of Yichun, Xu Zhaojun, had said the crew reported being able to see lights on the ground and had requested a normal landing.
By daylight on Wednesday police had sealed off the scene of twisted and burned wreckage and the bodies of the dead were wrapped in body bags, waiting to be taken to a morgue, said Xinhua.
Technicians from Embraer, the world’s largest maker of regional jets, flew on Tuesday to China to investigate the crash [ID:nN245116]. Embraer shares tumbled 3.9 percent to 10.42 reais in Sao Paulo.
Henan Airlines is a small regional carrier controlled by Shenzhen Airlines, itself part-owned by Air China. The airline is based in Henan, a poor province in central China, and recently changed its name from Kunpeng Airlines.
China’s last major civilian aircraft crash was in 2004, when a CRJ200 operated by China Eastern Airlines came down in a frozen lake in northern Inner Mongolia shortly after take-off, killing more than 50 people.
Real Levasseur, chief of the Transportation Safety Board team investigating the craft, said the Airbus 340 landed too far down the 9,000-foot runway before skidding some 200 yards, landing nose down in a ravine amid torrential rains and winds.
"We do have some information that the aircraft did land long," Levasseur said at a news briefing. "We are still in the process of gathering all that data to find out what that means."
An Air France spokesman in Paris declined to comment, saying the carrier would wait for the result of a full investigation before publicly discussing the possible cause of the crash.
Some aviation experts said the aircraft could have been pushed by a strong crosswind at the same time it touched down on a slick runway, decreasing tire traction and causing a hydroplaning effect.
Levasseur said there was no evidence, meanwhile, that lightning struck the Airbus A340 as it was landing, as reported by some witnesses. "The wings and wing tips are in pretty good shape."

Three burlap sacks never made it back to the barn. Left by the base of the sycamore tree, they became the hibernating place for ladybugs. Ladybugs over-winter in debris. Deep in the folds of the rough fabric, the ladybugs have filled the layered tiers with the knit of tightly packed red bodies. Ladybugs are revered by farmers and gardeners. So named by medieval winemakers, after The Lady, given to them by God, to protect their precious crop. Ladybugs do not have “lady-like” appetites — they can eat up to five aphids a day. It takes about 3,000 ladybugs to patrol ...
“Gov. Hochul’s ambitious housing plan meets suburban blockade” was the headline last week in the Gothamist. “Gov. Kathy Hochul’s plan to build 800,000 new homes over the next 10 years statewide is running into a familiar obstacle: suburbanites,” began the article. It continued: “Already, local officials in Westchester County, the Hudson Valley and on Long Island are organizing against the central plank of the Democrat’s newly unveiled plan that would set housing production targets for every city, town or village in the state. If a municipality misses the mark, the state could step in and approve new housing development, Hochul ...

Travel offers us safe temptation. It lets us be someone we are not, a tourist, for a few days, a week, a month. A tourist, by design, is there to lap the cream from the top of any place — to roll high, to indulge carnal wants. Be it food, be it warmth, be it drink, adventure or sleep, a tourist on vacation follows temptation, gets it, pays for it, and hopes to be sated somehow more deeply. We like to think we are educated, enlightened and rejuvenated by vacation. I do not like leaving home and becoming a tourist ...
