The International Chemical Biology Society (ICBS) has selected Rongsheng (Ross) Wang, assistant professor of chemistry, as a 2022 Young Chemical Biologist awardee.

ICBS cited Wang’s significant contributions to the field of bioorthogonal chemistry (the study of chemical reactions that occur inside of living systems without interfering with native biochemical processes) through his pioneering work in developing a selective fluorine displacement reaction. These tools are being further developed to explore cell biology in various disease states, which could lead to new diagnostic tools for human diseases such as cancer, inflammation and autoimmune disorders.

“I’m honored and excited to join an international community of outstanding researchers working under the common goal of uncovering solutions for diseases and promoting research and education at the interface of chemistry and biology,” said Wang.

Earlier this year, Wang received a five-year, $700,000 award from the National Science Foundation to develop chemistry-aided imaging techniques of cellular components. In 2021, he was selected as a Cottrell Scholar, one of 25 outstanding teacher-scholars in chemistry, physics and astronomy, by the Research Corporation for Science Advancement.

“Ross has established a thriving research group at Temple and we are thrilled with his success,” said Ann Valentine, professor and chair of the Department of Chemistry. “His team is doing groundbreaking research in bioorthogonal chemistry and chemical biology probes, one of the hottest areas of chemistry right now and the focus of the chemistry Nobel Prize this year. We’re so proud that ICBS recognized Ross’s research excellence.”

According to Wang, the Chemistry Department has built a very welcoming atmosphere for researchers, faculty and students. “I appreciate the department’s support for me to pursue interdisciplinary research and establish a chemical biology research group over the past six years,” said Wang. “I’ve been given enough room to set up a vigorous chemical biology education program here with new courses. Temple’s motto is Perseverance Conquers and that is such a great motto in general and especially for chemistry.”

I am retaking Orgo1 for this semester. Compared to the previous lecturer, Dr Wang makes 2201 bearable and I enjoyed most of his lectures. Orgo is always tough and overwhelming (the nature of this subject). But Dr. Wang is very organized and strictly follows the book. His test questions came directly from the lecture notes and book problems.

For short trips in Wenling, Taizhou Shicheng Flying Waterfall are all good options. The most famous attractions locally are Changyu Dongtian, Donghaitang Park. This area boasts amazing cultural sights with attractions like Wang Bomin Art Historical Science Hall, Wenling Museum. For those interested in the outdoors, attractions like Yingyue Park, Wangfuji Park, Hushan Park are excellent options.

Were they a gang of hoodlums brought together by ill circumstances to bully and harass others. Asserting their will over those weaker than themselves? This last part is doubtful due to Song, and another friend of theirs Wang Rongsheng being from wealthy families.

Perhaps during the height of a major catastrophic event surrounded by a collapsing dynasty Liang was simply teaching martial arts to this next generation? We have no reason why any of these boxers, with the exception of Wang Rongsheng came to claim Liang as their teacher. It is difficult to ascertain and formulate a definitive answer but more on that to follow.

A note on these boxing sets before we establish their plum blossom connection. The common forms that exist between the lines of plum blossom praying mantis boxing, supreme ultimate praying mantis boxing, and Qī Xīng (Seven Star 七星) praying mantis boxing, are all different from one another. This makes it next to impossible to tell which version is ‘correct’, or the original, but we can rule out Seven Star since Wang Rongsheng never studied under Liang Xuexiang.

Wang’s claimed teacher, Li Sanjian practiced Red Boxing (Hong Quan), not mantis boxing. Li was in his 70’s in 1888 when Wang started training with him, and died a few years later in 1891. So, it is difficult to assess how much knowledge he learned from Li in that time, and if that was their true relationship. I will write more on Wang later, but it is important to note that he was from a wealthy family and did martial arts as a hobby. Li San Jian was a famous fighter. Wang also ‘purchased’ his degree in the 1890’s (a common form of corruption taking place at this time due to the examination system being extremely difficult to pass). Wang failed the exams three times previous to purchasing his degree. Wang, and his family, quite possibly hired Li Sanjian for his protection services/knowledge. There relationship is unknown, and not relevant to our current further exploration of the plum blossom connection.

Wang Rongsheng, the founder of the seven star praying mantis branch, was close friends with the ‘plum blossom’ praying mantis boxing founders, and around the same age. Wang assuredly learned mantis boxing from these boxers, hisfriends. We can tell from a close study of our mantis boxing timeline, as well as his connections to, and exactly when he in noted as meeting his claimed teacher, Li San Jian.
