Word soon spread within the F1 community regarding CNC Techniques range of capabilities and Mr Eden’s fledgling business quickly established a loyal customer base. The mainstays of CNC Techniques machining capabilities are its high-performance Hurco 3-axis and 5-axis machine tools. To provide an additional 2-axes to the company’s 3-axis machines and to add greater machining flexibility, CNC Techniques recently invested in a rotary table solution from Lehmann.

“Although we are kept busy throughout the year, our workload more than doubles in the traditionally busy F1 months of December through to February. Therefore, at this time of year, apart from working around the clock, we need to work smarter and employ equipment that provides greater flexibility. The need for machining flexibility and the requirement for an additional 2-axes on our Hurco VMX 30, 3-axis machining centre, were the major motivations behind the recent rotary table purchase.

“Even though I was aware of the excellent reputation of Lehmann products, I was open to the idea of purchasing alternative brands of rotary tables. Although, when compared to the indifferent response I received when I contacted some other manufacturers, the reaction I had from Lehmann was first-class. All of my questions were answered quickly and several constructive suggestions were made by the company’s technical staff.

“In addition to giving us the ability to achieve five-sided machining in a single setup, I was assured that a Lehmann rotary table would withstand the high forces involved in machining exotics and also deliver the standards of precision we need.

“The installation of the rotary table was carried-out by a couple of knowledgeable technicians who made all of the connections to our Hurco VMX 30 3-axis machine tool’s control system,” he adds.

“Then, whilst observing the rotary table’s try out I realised how easy it was to operate. We now use the rotary table along with our Lang Technik workholding. In addition to standing up to the machining forces used to machine exotics, the rotary table is simple and fast to operate and is making a significant contribution to our 3+2 axis machining capabilities.”

Increasingly, users of 3-axis VMCs are fitting Lehmann CNC rotary tables to their machines as they represent a cost-effective means of entry into 5-axis machining. When mounted in a VMC, the tables are able to deliver a tilting A-axis and/or a rotational C-axis.

Given the compact nature of Lehmann CNC rotary tables, they allow workholding devices to be located alongside them inside VMCs. If required they are able to remain in the machine, or they can be quickly removed and later replaced according to the machining jobs being carried-out.

By locating workholding beside the a compact Lehmann rotary table, a virtual 6-axis condition can be achieved. For example, following the five-sided machining of a workpiece held on the rotary table, without a break, machining can be undertaken on the next workpiece in a batch that is held in the neighbouring workholding.

As floor space is at a premium in most machining environments, mounting a CNC rotary table inside an existing 3-axis VMCs provides a major advantage over purchasing a large 5-axis machine tool. In addition, the cost of the table is a mere fraction that of an expensive new machine tool

Lehmann has been designing and manufacturing high-quality rotary tables for more than 40 years. The experience and expertise gained over this time is reflected in the quality of the company’s advanced products and in its exemplary levels of service.

To minimise parts and to enable the delivery of Swiss quality at a cost-effective price, Lehmann rotary tables are based on an innovative, standard modular system. This highly efficient approach allows a wide range of CNC rotary table options to be made available to meet all customers’ diverse needs.

pL LEHMANN has developed a rotary table program optimized for measurement technology – the MQ series. The Swiss manufacturer offers two distinctly different models, the "Q-Line" and the "M-Line". While the "Q-Line" can be retrofitted to almost any measuring device at any time and automated if required, the "M-Line" is available from the measuring machine manufacturer (OEM) as a fully integrated model.

The Q-Line is ideal for stand-alone use. It is suitable for both new and retrofit equipment of coordinate measuring machines (CMM), for example, from all established manufacturers and also of other measuring devices (for roundness, contour, surface...), which it transforms into versatile measuring stations.

As an entry-level model – suitable for simple applications on the shop floor or in measurement laboratory – pL LEHMANN offers the manual, super-flexible rotary table MA-508.m Q. It can be combined with height, contour, and surface measuring devices and is recommended for run-out test equipment and coordinate measuring machines. Users can set different ratios to fast or slow in just a few steps. A smooth-running, sensitive handwheel makes it possible to approach any position very precisely and unerringly. A fold-out digital display shows the angular position with a resolution of 0.001°.

pL Q-Line rotary tables are optionally available in a housing made of aluminum (e.g. for transmitted light systems) or of spheroidal graphite iron (e.g. for CMMs). In addition, each unit is equipped with an emergency stop switch to meet the high safety requirements.

For more than 40 years, the Swiss company pL LEHMANN has been building compact, high precision CNC rotary tables. The powerful design offers many special features, like a built-in booster for spindle clamp, an internal monitoring system which checks all vital functions, including Bluetooth accessibility for remote service. The product line also offers a wide variety of workpiece clamping options, including options for fully automated robot loading and unloading. New: “direct drive” rotary axis for Millturn functions.

With innovative CNC rotary tables, organized in a standard modular system, the company strives to meet the international needs for economical production of very small to medium-sized workpieces in the machining industry by satisfying individual requirements with appropriate combinations.

Complicated workpiece geometries require multiple and flexible workpiece clamping and motions in the machine compartment. Based on a high level of standardization, pL LEHMANN is able to offer an appropriate and economical solution for the most varied of applications. Short setup times increase productivity and the degree of utilization. At the same time, the user has the ability to automate one step at a time: e.g. starting with manual loading, progressing to simple linear feed systems and ultimately to fully automated production with robots. With interfaces for different clamping systems, supplemented with the appropriate clamping cylinders and rotary unions and possibly even stroke and pressure monitoring, a wide range of modules is available.

Over the course of a month, Pequot can run between 600 and 800 active jobs with lot sizes ranging from a couple of parts to thousands of parts. Recently, though, the shop was experiencing poor part surface finishes and inconsistent tolerances on VMCs with rotary tables to enable four-axis machining, two problems that would randomly and inexplicably occur from one batch of parts to the next and sometimes even during the same part run. Pequot would set up a job and run some parts that would be machined to specification. Then, out of the blue, a part would come off the machine out of tolerance or with chatter marks on its surface finish, and tool life would suddenly take a nosedive.

Pequot evaluated all aspects of its process to determine the cause of these problems, including the machine tools, toolholders, cutting tools, workholding devices and part programs. Eventually, the shop realized inconsistent rotary table positioning was the culprit, even though initial inspections of those tables seemed to reveal they were operating properly.

“The inconsistency hindered us from immediately tracing the cause back to the rotary tables,” explains Kevin Spielman, Pequot’s production manager. “When experiencing such a hiccup, we would adjust machining speeds and feeds to compensate, and get a few good parts. Then, unbeknownst to us, the tables would operate correctly, but we’d be running at the wrong machining parameters. This, in turn, also produced bad parts. After a while, we were constantly chasing our tails and second-guessing ourselves when it came to adjusting operational parameters.”

This spurred the shop to replace the tables with pL Lehmann EA510 and EA511 single-spindle units from Exsys/Eppinger. These rotary tables, acquired from local Exsys distributor Hill Industrial Tools, give the shop’s three-axis VMCs more reliable fourth-axis capabilities for part positioning and rotational machining.

“Once we installed the pL Lehmann tables, our inconsistency and rigidity problems vanished,” Mr. Spielman says. “We experienced immediate and further improvements in accuracy, tool life, machining speeds and material removal rates to the point that we reduced part machining cycle times by 25 percent. Plus, we basically eliminated any machine downtime associated with our previous rotary tables. Most importantly, the new tables have increased our machine utilization. We now have the confidence and ability to run our automated milling machines nonstop for lights-out production over night and on weekends.”

Despite their compact design, the pL Lehmann tables are said to offer strong resistance to pullout torque and axial force while providing high levels of clamping torque. In addition, their backlash-free, preloaded gear drive (PGD) technology is said to deliver the high torque common to gear-driven tables and the high rotational speeds common to direct-drive tables, with spindles capable of speeds ranging from 47 to 111 rpm and 90-degree moves in 0.34 second.

The spindles on the standard-model tables are guaranteed to within 5 microns of runout (less than 3 microns for the high-accuracy models). The tables’ ±1 arc-second positioning capability, along with near-zero runout, makes them well-suited for Pequot’s demanding tight-tolerance applications. Steel parts machined on the pL Lehmann tables typically measure approximately 1.125 inches in diameter and 8 inches long; aluminum parts are commonly 5 inches in diameter and 6 inches long.

Mr. Goerges says that with the increasing business Pequot is winning, its goal is to get the most production out of its manufacturing equipment. Automation plays a key role. In fact, the shop refers to this goal as “168,” referring to the number of available hours in one work week. “With the new rotary tables, we’ve increased our machine output and won back massive amounts of production time on our automated VMCs,” he says.
