If a customer installs an excess flow gas shut-off valve or earthquake-actuated gas shut-off valve, the valve must be certified by the State of California. A licensed plumbing contractor must install it according to the manufacturer’s instructions. We do not install or service seismic-actuated or excess flow gas shut-off valves. Excess flow gas shut-off valves and earthquake-actuated gas shut-off valves must be installed on the building’s gas houseline piping. This pipeline is the gas pipe that connects your appliances to the gas meter downstream of the utility point of delivery. No attachments or connections of any kind are allowed on the utility facilities before the point where the service tee connects to the gas houseline piping. A closed gas service shut-off valve or automatic gas shut-off device can delay the restoration of your service by PG&E. Please do not turn the gas on, yourself. An excess flow valve is a mechanical device installed inside a natural gas distribution service line between the street and residential meter that enhances the safety of your natural gas service. If there is a significant increase in the flow of natural gas (e.g., due to a damaged line), the EFV will “trip” or close to minimize the flow of gas through the service line. Once the repair is made and the correct pressure is restored, the EFV automatically resets itself.

Note that an EFV cannot protect against certain leaks on the service line or meter such as those caused by corrosion or loose fittings. It also cannot protect against leaks beyond the natural gas meter, for example, natural gas piping inside the premises and also at or near appliances.

While the pipelines serving your community are already safe, federal code changes require that we let customers know about this supplemental device. Note that an EFV is not required on existing natural gas service pipelines.

To mark the 20th anniversary of the Northridge earthquake, Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas®) would like to remind customers about natural gas safety in the event of an earthquake.

If you smell gas, hear the sound of gas escaping or see signs of a leak, do not light a match, candle or cigarette and do not turn electrical devices – not even a light switch – on or off, or use any device that can cause a spark. Immediately evacuate the area of the leak and, from a safe location, call SoCalGas at 1-800-427-2200.

Because its response to customer calls may be delayed in the aftermath of an earthquake, SoCalGas offers the following information on shutting off appliance line valves and the gas meter for those customers who feel it is necessary, prudent, and safe to do so before SoCalGas is able to respond:

If an appliance or appliance connector appears to have a leak, turning off the line valve between shutting off all gas service at the meter. Some valves may the appliance and gas line may permit you to turn off the gas at the appliance rather than require a wrench to turn them. If this does not stop the leak, the gas will have to be shut off at the meter. To turn the gas off at the meter, use a 12-inch or larger adjustable wrench and turn the valve a quarter-turn in either direction until the valve is cross-wise to the pipe. This will shut off the flow of gas.

If you turn off your gas at the meter, leave it off. Do not turn it back on yourself. Interior gas piping and appliances must be inspected for possible damage before service can be safely restored.

Call SoCalGas to turn the gas back on, relight the pilots and service your appliances. Note that certain repairs may have to be performed by your plumber or heating contractor. However, only SoCalGas field employees are allowed to turn on the gas meter.

We also want you to know about automatic shut-off devices, which are an additional safety measure that are installed at certain points throughout our natural gas systems. Automatic shut-off devices are designed to operate like circuit-breakers, so when they sense operating pressure that is too high or too low, they automatically shut off gas flow.
