Long story but a good friend lost all hydraulic pressure after cleaning the filter screen on his Mahindra tractor. We felt certain the pump had lost prime so I did a little searching on the net to see what type of fix I might find. Ran across an easy method of using a air hose to pressurize the fluid reservoir in the transmission since the transmission fluid drives the hydraulics as well. Worked like a charm. Not a lot of pressure needed and its a fix that works on any tractor with an external pump.

I have a New Holland TC45D that recently decided to blow the hydraulic pump shaft seal and leak 4 gallons of hydraulic oil into my engine. I bought a pump rebuild kit, swapped out the parts, reinstalled the pump, topped off the hydraulics and drained off the extra hydraulic oil in the engine. My problem is that now I don"t have any hydraulics. The pump does not have a bleed screw. The hydrostatic drive and my power steering both work (different pumps?) but my 3PH and FEL are both dead at the moment. I ran the engine for a minute and tried to cycle the controls but I was afraid to run the pump dry for any longer than I had. I backed the tractor out of my garage and up a slight hill hoping that the new oil will drain downhill into the pump and i"ll have a primed pump in the morning. Other than what I have already done, does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Some universal kits have gaskets that will not work on your particulat pump. It is advisable to keep the old gaskets and remember where they were located in the pump to avoid making mistakes.

I was once given a pump that had new bearings, new seal, new shaft and a new valve and spring kit with new pistons. Everything that you can put in a pump. I thought boy this is going to be a piece of cake. I put it on my tractor and couldn"t get it to do a thing. I took it back apart and made sure the seal was not installed backwards etc. All seemed right. I put it back together and same no work. I put it on the shelf and it laid there for several years. Then one day I took a complete new set of gaskets out of a kit and realized that one of the new gaskets had a cutaway that would allow the oil to bypass the valve if used in the pump I was working on. After I finished repairing the present one I took the pump off the shelf and took it apart and this time I took the valve plate off the head of the pump. Sure enough the wrong gasket was installed with the by pass cut into it. I put the correct gsket in it and sold that thing for $400. Worked perfectly!

I had to remove the return line going to pump, now i have air in it, i tried to prime the pump but it will not pick up the prime, the return line is about 30 "how do i get this line full, or is there another way to prime sys. and bleed the air out of it.PLESE HELP i don;t want to haul it 30 miles to dealer.buckjones@aol.com

1999-09-23 8220Make sure there is plenty of oil in the transmission! Then try either jacking up the rear of the tractor or,even better, backing up a steep hill. The pump should prime itself. If it is still not picking up the oil, don"t keep running the tractor or the pump will sieze up.

Before you bleed out the air in your steel tubes and other hydraulic system components, it is important to understand what type of air is in the system. Air within the system may be:

Bleeding only works for “free” air pockets where the air has not mixed with the fluid. For dissolved air, you can remove it by raising the temperature of the fluid until the air is released. This should only be done if absolutely necessary as hydraulic oil will normally tend to be at least 10% dissolved air.

Bleed the Farthest Lines First – Start by bleeding the line farthest away from the pump and work inward, with the lines closest to the pump being bled last, and only bleed one line at a time.
