The faxed contract that Rod Tidwell rejects, and then choosing to play out his existing contract was $350,000 (year 1), $450,000 (year 2), $600,000 (year 3). In the scene where Rod Tidwell (Cuba Gooding, Jr.) is unsuccessful in mounting a camel, it is supposed to be an ad for the fictitious "Camel Chevrolet", which is a variation on one of many actual car dealerships on Camelback Road in Scottsdale, Arizona. Although the real Camelback Road is named after Camelback Mountain, along which it runs, the ad in this movie was filmed in the foothills of the Superstition Mountains in Apache Junction, Arizona, about thirty miles east of Scottsdale. Several scenes in Raising Arizona (1987) were also shot in this area.

The song "Wise Up" was written for this movie. Tom Cruise sang "Wise Up" in Paul Thomas Anderson"s Magnolia (1999). Cruise also received Oscar nominations for both movies.

Jerry Maguire (Tom Cruise) is flipping through the radio stations and finally starts jamming out to "Free Fallin"" by Tom Petty after his meeting with Frank "Cush" Cushman (Jerry O"Connell). Even though he didn"t know it at the time, Jerry was still in a "free fall".

(Singapore) Short for "sabotage". To cause trouble for one"s fellow soldiers, whether intentionally or unintentionally. Often used of soldiers who cause their group to suffer collective punishment. A frequent offender is known as a "sabo king". See Blue Falcon.

(U.S.) WWII-era term used to describe an individual, typically an officer, who makes military life unnecessarily difficult. This is typically done via over-and-above adherence to military regulations.

(Singapore) Menial labour such as area cleaning, carrying of stores, etc. May derive from the Hokkien for "shit work". A soldier who is volunteered by superiors to do (usually) menial work is termed a "saikang warrior".

(U.S. Army, Canada) Term referring to a Soldier who is performing his duties inefficiently or with laziness. Ex: "That Soldier is sandbagging it." [see "goldbricking," "shitbagging"]

(Singapore) Skeletal Battle Order; officially refers to an infantryman"s basic combat equipment, without field pack or field supplies. In slang usage, refers specifically to the old-style combat webbing and attached pouches, as opposed to the newer MOLLE-compatible load-bearing vest which is currently replacing it.

(U.K.) A signaler. It is suggested that this term comes from the figure of Mercury on their cap badges, who appears to have fish-like scales on his back. An alternative version is that it is related to the fact that old radios used to leak battery acid on the back of the man carrying it - hence they had a scaly back.

(U.S. Navy) Used to describe common liberty activities in some ports. Getting "Screwed, blued and tattooed" can imply a fun liberty, one where someone got in trouble for various. reasons, or one where the Sailors simply saw everything there was to see in a given port.

(U.S. Navy) A Sailor who does not keep his body clean. (U.S. Army & Air Force) A very important member of a unit, a Soldier who can obtain any materials and/or equipment, usually by other than normal channels.

(U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Navy) Routine of travel referring to the waiting period often encountered when transferring flights or waiting assignment to flight manifest.

(U.S./U.K. Navy) A senior enlisted man who acts as a guide to a junior (usually a "newbie"), showing him the ropes and guiding his early career. The civilian police equivalent is called a "rabbi".

(U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard, RN) A Sailor, probably too smart for his own good, who thinks he knows all of the regulations and quotes them to get out of either work or trouble. Other U.S. and U.K. military equivalent is "Barrack Room Lawyer" (U.K.), and "Barracks Lawyer" or, more crudely, "Shithouse Lawyer" (U.S.).

(U.S. Marine Corps) Refers to the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program, the hand-to-hand combat system used by the Marines, which has different levels of belts (tan, grey, green, brown, black) for different levels. Combination of "Semper Fi" and "kung-fu".

(Singapore) Backronym for the Singapore Armed Forces, generally used by conscript soldiers whose primary concern is to finish their obligation and get back to civilian life. Not to be used within earshot of senior NCOs or officers.

(U.S. Army) A term used for the Army"s Specialist rank. Meaning that a Specialist can now get privates to do their work. Also, because a specialist is not accountable for anything, but still has authority. Also known as a chicken on a platter, because of the eagle in the middle of the shield.

(U.S. Air Force) used at Beale AFB, including accompanying deployed locations and S. Korea, referring to a particular person that cannot perform his duties adequately, namely in aircraft maintenance.

(Canada) A very condescending and uncomplimentary term for civilians (Civvies), especially those who do not agree with the military perspective about something.

(All English-speaking navies, originally U.K.) A Sailor who has crossed the Equator during a tour. There is a "Crossing the Line" ceremony where all Shellbacks kindly harass the new initiates - called tadpoles or pollywogs - to initiate them into the position of Shellback. The senior Shellback aboard presides as King Neptune"s personal representative.

(U.K.) Regimental Admin Officers and those in similar desk-bound posts. The green polyester "barrack trousers" formerly worn by Army office workers did indeed acquire a certain shine to the seat after prolonged contact with an office chair.

(U.S. Army) Term used to describe being selected for latrine duty in the field or the practice of burning the buckets of shit, with diesel fuel, collected from the field latrines. To be selected means you have "shit patrol".

(U.S. Air Force) Someone who works a desk job in the military, has no idea what military operations really are, is convinced that his relatively meaningless, bureaucratic job is the most important function in the military, and causes the people doing the real mission to waste time and resources on his petty, trivial tasks. See queep.

(U.S.) A U.S. Navy term for captain"s mast (non-judicial punishment presided by the unit commanding officer) . This refers to the green felt cloth draped over the commanding officer"s table during mast. The green cloth is a tradition dating to the Royal Navy in the 15th century that is symbolic for the Captain"s mastery of the seas.

(U.S.) Term coined during Vietnam era to describe personnel approaching the end of their tour and/or term of service. Usually announced in an obnoxious and rowdy manner — examples: "I"m so short I had to parachute out of bed this morning and accidentally landed in my boot!", "I"m so short I could sit on a piece of paper and dangle my legs over the edge!" Modified into "short-timer" in the modern military era.

(U.S.) Pair of rubber sandals (a.k.a. "flip-flops") issued to recruits to prevent infections from the use of community or shared showers. See also Jesus. shoes. Also used as a slightly pejorative term for junior servicemember. Comes from the perception that new personnel still wear their footwear in the shower, as mandated in boot camp or basic training.

(U.S. Navy) Pejorative term for Sonar Technicians who are perceived to never get dirty from their work, which mostly involves sitting in front of computer screens and seem to have a lot of off-watch time as compared to other enlisted rates, hence the ability to take a shower whenever.

(U.S. Army) someone who is "hardcore" about malingering. Also, the more-recent "sick-call ninja", "master of malingering", "clinic ninja" or "profile ranger".

2. The NATO phonetic alphabet abbreviation for Shit Hot. It is considered high praise and is the pilot"s favorite and all-purpose expression of approval. For example, "That Sierra Hotel pilot just shot down six MiGs and an ICBM!" This is the "polite" military way to say that something is very impressive, and has come into use outside the military.

(U.S. Navy) A signature on a qualification card (a card that shows you are ready to stand a particular watch) . There are many, many "qual cards" in the Navy that must be completed before being allowed to take an exam or be interviewed by a board to be qualified to stand a particular watch or role. Some qual cards and their individual sigs can be easy or extremely difficult to obtain. In some cases a junior Sailor going for a sig may not only have to prove his/her knowledge to a senior crewmember, but also do something extra for that signature--such as performing a minor menial task or bringing a small bribe like a can of soda.

(U.S. Marine Corps) Organizational equipment issued to a Marine from his unit and kept by the Marine as personal gear, but is expected to be returned in serviceable condition upon that Marine"s detachment from the unit. Usually refers to load-bearing equipment, rucksacks, body armor, helmets and other field gear. From the warrior Sith lords in the "Star Wars" franchise.

(U.S.) Six months confinement, six months loss of pay, reduction in grade to E-1, Bad Conduct Discharge; formerly the most severe penalty that could be awarded by a special court martial. A special court martial can now adjudge 12 months confinement.

(U.S.M.C.) To avoid real work, as in someone that always has something else to do, or, an easy job, as in " Jones gets to be the C.G.s driver this month, that"s so skate".

(English speaking Navies) Submariner"s pejorative term for Sailors on surface warships, especially destroyers and frigates. The ships are often referred simply as "targets", even if speaking of one"s own Navy.

(U.S. Navy) A term used by ship"s crew for an Airman on an aircraft carrying vessel referring to the multi-colored candy "Skittles". Aircraft handling crew (and some ship"s crew) wear colored pull-over shirts depending on their job which stands out to the majority of a ship"s crewmen in plain blue uniforms.

(U.S. Navy) Used by Navy air traffic controllers to refer to a metal or plastic bucket that excess coffee and coffee grounds are disposed into. Each day the Slop Bucket PO (Petty Officer) - normally a non-petty officer rank, E1-E3 - is charged with disposing of the contents and cleaning the bucket for the following day. Slop Bucket PO is not a legitimate collateral duty, but still a common duty given to junior air traffic controllers prior to receiving any controller qualifications.

(U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy) Short Little Ugly Fucker (Clean Short Little Ugly Fellow) Description and term of affection for the A-7 Corsair II attack aircraft.

An acronym short for "Soldier Minus. Ability, Coordination, and Knowledge", formerly referred to a fourth-class cadet (freshman) at the United States Air Force Academy (also called a "doolie"). The term is still used to refer to fourth-class cadets on the Cadet Honor Guard.

(U.S.) General term for a person acting more important than they are. Like they are getting high from smelling themselves. Common among E-4 (SPC) in leadership positions. Use started in Afghanistan. Usage: "He was talking back to me like he was smelling his own musk."

(U.S. Army) Term to describe punishment of minor offenses by means of excessive physical training. Usage: "The drill instructor smoked me for talking back." See U.S. Marine Corps term Thrashed

(U.S.) General term for a Drill Instructors" (Marine Corps), Drill Sergeants" (Army), Military Training Instructors" (Air Force) or Company Commanders" (U.S. Coast Guard) wide-brimmed hat. Properly called a campaign hat and formerly standard uniform issue in the Army and Marine Corps (per-WWII). Also called "round brown hat".

(U.S.) Acronym for "Situation Normal, All Fucked Up"; dating probably before World War II, Oxford English Dictionary defines it as "an expression conveying the common Soldier"s laconic acceptance of the disorder of war and the ineptitude of his superiors" [5]. It began to enter the everyday American lexicon shortly after the war. It also spawned other acronyms denoting increasing states of "fucked up":

(U.S.) An Air Force term for the TI table in a dining facility at BMT or a situation where many people are critically watching for the slightest break in protocol, usually award events or promotion ceremonies.

(Canada and U.S.) A salute rendered to an officer in a field environment, where salutes are normally proscribed because they identify officers to the enemy.

(U.S. Navy) Acronym for Shortest Nuke On Board. The nuke on board a submarine with the least amount of time left on board; usually someone on their first and only enlistment, without any intention of re-enlisting.

(U.S.) Insult often used in Basic Combat Training, referring to an action, uniform or task done inefficiently or improperly. Example: "Your uniform is all messed up, looking like a soup sandwich."

(U.S., U.K.) A spy. Used for anyone in the CIA, NSA, NRO, DIA, MI5 or MI6. In the military, one who deals with the gathering of electronic intelligence.

(U.S.) A U.S. Navy Sailor. Often used with derogatory intent. Inspired naming of the cartoon character Squiddly Diddly, a squid in a Sailor suit. Squidward has also been used in recent years, lifted from the name of a character from the Sponge Bob Square Pants cartoon.

(U.S.) Originally parts of a military-issue rifle (the stacking swivel was located near the muzzle, in front of the forward sling swivel, and was used to hook the rifles together when stacking arms). Now used to refer to a male Soldier"s throat, and always used in the phrase "pick you up by your stacking swivel" to connote that the speaker, usually a DI, metaphorically intends to bodily move you from one place to another. Example: "Son, if you don"t move pronto, I"m gonna’ pick you up by your stacking swivel and put you in the proper position of attention." "I"m gonna’ grab you by the stacking swivel and shake the stupid out of you!"

(U.S.) Used as a verb for to be proud, or to present a military appearance. Also can refer to having to answer to higher authority facing consequences: "Standing tall before the man."

(U.S. Army, U.S. Marine Corps) Regular term among Soldiers to both stay calm and stay alert.: "I"m not sure if these guys are friendlies or not. We might be walking into something here. Stay frosty."

(U.K.) Derogatory effort to work around the prohibition of another pejorative term. Denotes "Still a [fill-in],"e.g., Still a Bennie (RN), Still a Split (RN), Still a STAB (Army). Itself prohibited and superseded by Andys denoting And he"s still a Bennie etc.

(CSA) Term for 116th Infantry Regiment, commanded by Thomas J. Jackson at First Manassas during the American Civil War, where he earned the nickname "Stonewall".

U.S. Army slang term for "a well-organized, well turned-out Soldier, (pressed uniform, polished brass and shined boots)." A proud, competent trooper who can be depended on for good performance in any circumstance.

(U.S.) "Stupid Tankers Under Mortar Protection" Acronym used by Infantry to describe Armor personnel to show that being Infantry is a harder profession.

(U.S.) The field, bad conditions, rotten duty, used to describe the military as a whole. One might say "embrace the suck" to tell someone to stop complaining and accept the situation.

(U.S.) (Submarine Service) Extended periods wearing Emergency Air Breathing devices (EABs), a full-face air mask similar to that worn by firefighters, except fed from ship"s emergency air system rather than a bottle on your back. (U.S. Air Force) Wearing the chemical warfare mask, especially in MOPP 4. "We spent two hours sucking rubber".

(U.S.) Any male military member, especially a lower-ranking enlisted male. For example, "Every swinging dick in here had better be ready to go in ten minutes!" In polite company, "swinging Richard."

(U.S.) Staff Weather Officer, (pron. SW-oh) generally refers to any USAF commissioned or non-commissioned officer supporting Army operations downrange or in-garrison. Term of endearment and/or derision depending on current weather forecast, usually prefaced with "F-ing" if said forecast sucks.

Sierra Army Depot is retasked with the demilitarization of surplus ammunition, under the the Industrial Operations Command in cooperation with the Environmental Protection Agency

Sierra Army Depot is retasked again as a secret research installation for developing and testing robotic, biological and conventional weapons until 2076.

The United States becomes more aggressive in its foreign policy and imposes economic sanctions on Mexico to protect its oil and business interests, citing Mexico"s political instability and pollution as excuse. Eventually, the United States military invades Mexico to secure its oil industry and ensure it continues being exported northwards.

An energy crisis shocks America, prompting the development of alternative fuel sources. REPCONN Aerospace is one of the companies investing in the process.

April: Resource Wars begin. Smaller nations go bankrupt as the European Commonwealth declares war on the Middle East in response to rising oil prices.

ZAX 1.0 goes online, developed by Vault-Tec. A prototype for Vault governance system, it is transferred to the Department of Energy to collect resource data. Within a year, it is seized by the military for plague and tactical research, with a derivative, ZAX 1.2, later created for West Tek.

In light of the European-Middle Eastern War and the plague scare, the United States officially sets Project Safehouse in motion. The project, financed by junk bonds, is designed to create shelters, called Vaults, for the populace in the event of a nuclear war or deadly plague. Construction begins late in 2054 and proceeds rapidly due to advances in construction technology.

The Anchorage Front Line is established, to enforce American military presence in Alaska and protect its oil reserves. Canada is pressured into allowing permanent military bases to guard the Trans-Alaskan Pipeline.

Fuel becomes too precious to waste on automobiles, leading to traffic slowing down worldwide. Electric and fission-powered cars enter the market in limited amounts due to energy shortages. Pressure on fusion research increases.

The European Commonwealth collapses. Its constituent nations tear each other apart, fighting over the remaining resources. The European Civil War begins.

August: Most Vaults are completed, with some exceptions. Vault drills begin with increasing frequency, leading to a "cry wolf" effect, gradually reducing turnouts.

June: A nuclear reactor in New York City almost suffers a supercriticality accident and a meltdown, due to extreme energy demand. Power rationing is instituted, with the incident deemed the Hot Summer.

Spring: China"s reliance on fossil fuels in the face of a global oil shortage causes an energy crisis that brings it to the brink of collapse. China becomes more aggressive in its trade talks with the United States, but the talks break down due to American unwilligness to export oil to its communist foes.

Summer: The first crude fusion cellis unveiled, as a side effect of the power armor project. Fusion power is quickly adopted nationwide, but the incorporation into the infrastructure is slow, and never reaches full adoption before the Great War.

December: Canada is pressured by the United States to permit military access for American military units. Its initial reluctance raises tensions, while subsequent agreement sets the stage for the Canadian annexation in 2076.

USS Ebon Atoll is accidentally sunk by USS Interference during the Anchorage Campaign. The Interference mistook the Ebon Atoll for an enemy vessel and shot it with a nuclear torpedo, killing all on board. It is one of the worst U.S. Navy disasters since World War II.

The first power armor is deployed in Alaska, proving effective against Chinese tanks and troops thanks to its ability to carry heavy weapons. China rushes to create its own, but lags behind.

US exploits Canadian resources extensively, destroying vast stretches of timberland and stretching other resources to the breaking point. Canada is treated as Little America and Canadian protests are ignored.

The first Chryslus Motors fusion-powered cars are developed. Big and expensive, they sell out within days. Supply is limited, as many Chryslus plants are soon converted for military production.

June 3: US exploitation of Canada causes riots in several Canadian cities. Attempted sabotage of the pipeline provides the justification for annexing Canada.

July 11: Several soldiers are killed at the Ultra-Luxe casino in a botched arrest, after stealing 20 million dollars from their post at Vault 79 and deserting.Sergeant Kathryn Montgomery is found a day later at the Lucky 38 with the bullion. She escapes the city, branded a Chinese spy. She is killed four days later, in the Gulf of Mexico after USS Wade opens fire on her speedboat as she tries to escape the US.

United States forces invade mainland China despite claims of fighting a purely defensive war. Extended supply lines cause the offensive to quickly bog down.

March 21: PVP is renamed Forced Evolutionary Virus (FEV) after experimental successes with animal cells. Plant cell experiments are postponed indefinitely.

December 17: PAM posits that Chinese stealth technology is advanced enough to support the existence of the "Ghost Fleet." The report is dismissed as incredible.

January: Closure of Monongah Mine prompts a sit-in protest by miners. An explosion collapses the mine with them trapped inside. They are pronounced dead by the mine supervisor, likely to avoid a costly rescue operation.

January: The annexation of Canada is complete. Canadian protesters are shot without trial, military occupation secures the pipeline, and atrocities commited by the American military fuel domestic unrest.

June: T-51 power armor is complete and sent to the Chinese front. Their performance demoralizes the enemy force, leading to surrenders, breakdownof supply lines, and start to collapse the Chinese war effort.

August: Food and energy riots take place in response to the deteriorating domestic situation. Military units are used to quell unrest. A state of emergency is declared and soon after martial law nationwide.

October 2: John Miller, proprietor of Big John"s Salvage, finishes sealing the cracks and clamping the pipes in the shelter he is building on his property.

October 4: FEV experiments on chimpanzees produce the best results to date. Together with Huntersville results, the military invests in continued testing in quarantined towns in North America and the construction of Mariposa Military Base for military experiments with FEV.

November 26: The SenateCommittee of Nuclear Energy discusses overturning the ban on exploiting the largest uranium deposit in the United States, newly discovered on the East Coast. Sam Blackwell embarasses his Senate colleague, Senator Clark, revealing his purchase of a large stake in Atomic Mining Services.

January 22: Power armor is deployed against protesters in the United States for the first time. Veterans of China and Alaska now fight their own countrymen, causing civilian casualties thatintensify food riots and cause desertions among American soldiers on the homefront.

February: FEV research leaks to the public. Protests erupt worldwide, directed against the United States, and claims begin to circulate that the New Plague was engineered by the US in the first place.

July 13: Mass Fusion containment shed suffers a workplace fatality, with an employee ran over by a reversing forklift. Mass Fusion ignores the event, limiting the reaction to mandating more OSHA posters.

July 17: The Pittsburgh Union Steel Company triples quotas for its workers to meet the demands of the US for the Sino-American War. This is met with condemnation and plans to strike after the previous quota was barely met.

September: Free States leaders Raleigh Clay and Sam Blackwell declare their secession from the United States. The movement retreats to fortified bunkers in the mires of Appalachia.

September 6: General Chase"s obsession with the simulation becomes clear to the VSS technicians, due to a slew of radical changes that distort the actual historical record.

September 19: The owner of Pittsburgh Union Steel Company, Mr. Mackeson, visits the plant and workers to reassure the changes where for the war effort. His presence nearly causes a riot as Protectrons need to be used to get him out.

September 27:Bysshe Company funds a secret lab beneath Van Lowe Taxidermy for Calvin van Lowe, to conduct work on a disguised robot for corporate sabotage. The Lewisburg police ignore noise reports.

September 28: New Appalachia Bank at the New Appalachian Central Trainyard is destroyed by an explosion during a botched bank raid. Two of the three robbers are killed, together with multiple employees and bystanders.

October:Nuka-Cola Corporationsponsorsthe Whitespring as its first business class partner.Nuka-Cola bottle caps are planned to be accepted at the Whitespring as currency during the upcoming Quantum promotional event, for the first time in history.

October 1: A dialogue occurs between the Union, Mr. Mackeson, and Hal Caldwell as mediator. The exchange ends having reached an agreement, to avoid a repeat of the labor wars down south in Beckley and Welch, Mr. Mackeson would "pull some clever accounting" to make it seem that production had tripled. In exchange, the workers would do all they could to "squeeze just a little bit more out of everyone."

October 3: Automation riots begin due to AMS actions at Welch. Riots spread across Appalachia, responding to years of mistreatment. Facing a territory-wide rebellion, Governor Evans calls in the National Guard, assisted by corporate contractors. Riots escalate to armed confontations, miner strikes,Rockhound, and even direct action, such as attacking Bramwell to topple the Mega Mansions of the wealthy industrialists who own the mines. One is destroyed, but neither the Garrahan nor Hornwright mansions are.Hornwright Industrial shuts down and disowns liability for injuries sustained by workers crossing picket lines..

October 4:Hornwright contractors force the rioters to retreat from company properties, except for the Rockhound. Executives begin to plan how to force AMS to compensate the company for damages.

October 5: The rioters responsible for the Mega Mansion bombing are arrested. Bryce Garrahanrequests permission to open negotiations with the less belligerent of the militant miners.

October 7: Shipments of liquid nitrogen to Vault 111 are discovered at Boston"s Vault-Tec branch, fueling further suspicions about the true nature of the Vaults.

October 10: The Army contingent at Mariposa discovers the truth about human experiments at Mariposa: They are using military prisoners, rather than volunteers. Captain Roger Maxson assumes command after Colonel Spindel suffers a nervous breakdown, and steps in to prevent a bloodbath and orders the scientists to be interrogated.

October 12: The National Guard attacks the militant miners at Mount Blair to secure the Rockhound for Hornwright.Bill Garrahan joins the attack with his minigun, injuring six miners with his minigun and wipes out all progress towards a peaceful settlement between Garrahan Mining Company and its workers are set back a full week.

~October 16: Faneuil Hall"s attempted automation goes awry: After a perceived "shoplifitng crisis" earlier in the month, the merchants were convinced to install a robotic security force. The Protectrons wound up killing seven innocents, before being shut down.

October 18: Despite the riots, the "Man vs. Machine" contest takes place. Due to corporate sabotage, Hornwright Auto-Miners beat Garrahan"s mining power armor by a thin margin. Already suffering due to the miner riots, the company"s stock is sent into freefall.

October 20: Maxson broadcasts his unit"s desertion from the Army to force the government to answer. The call goes unanswered and he orders the troops and their families inside the base the following day.

October 22: The platinum chip is printed at Sunnyvale and sent by courier to reach Robert House the next day. It never leaves Sunnyvale due to the Great War.

October 22: Scott Turner initiates Operation Free Watoga, inadvertently causing a massacre as robots turn on the human citizens. The military tries to respond, but is unsuccessful.

12:03 AM: The commander of the United States Pacific fleet reports 3 Unidentified Submerged Objects off the coast of California to the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

9:13 AM: The Integrated Operational Nuclear Detection System reports 4 nuclear launches. DEFCON is raised to 2.National Guard and the National Catastrophe Relief Auxiliary are given a 29-minute warning from the Defense Intelligence Agency about the incoming nuclear strikes. Both organizations put in motion their respective contingency plans, setting up civilian evacuations, relief centers for medical treatment and military checkpoints for radiation clean-up sites.

9:47:51 AM:The entire United States is bombarded with nuclear warheads. Automated recording systems are forced offline.nuclear weapons. As America and China launch, so do other nuclear powers.Entire cities, their populations, and military units are wiped out. Salt Lake City is hit by thirteen nuclear warheads. Randall Clark"s family is among the casualties.Washington, D.C. suffers a massive attack and the resulting fires consume the city for days.

The West Tek Research Facility is hit by warheads, breaking open the F.E.V. tanks on levels four and five and releasing it into the atmosphere. The minute FEV exposure in California later complicates the plans of the Unity.

Aircraft are knocked out of the sky by electromagnetic pulses from the nukes. Skylanes Flight 1665 and Skylanes Flight 1981 and many more suffer this fate.
