As the name says, Diaphragm pumps use a diaphragm to create suction, pulling the fluid (high viscosity liquid or water with debris is okay) to fill the vacuum created when the diaphragm is expanded. Using check valves, the water is forced out the discharge hose when the motor compresses the diaphragm. With each cycle, the water is alternately sucked in and then discharged.

To create the vacuum, the diaphragm pump creates positive displacement with a combination of the reciprocating action of a rubber, thermoplastic or Teflon diaphragm and suitable non-return check valves to pump a fluid. Sometimes this type of pump is also called a membrane pump. A membrane made of elastomers or TFE, which flexes to produce pumping action.

The diaphragm is sealed with one side in the fluid to be pumped, and the other in air. The diaphragm is flexed, causing the volume of the pump chamber to increase and decrease, drawing in the fluid. A pair of non-return check valves prevent reverse flow of the fluid.
