As the name says, Diaphragm pumps use a diaphragm to create suction, pulling the fluid (high viscosity liquid or water with debris is okay) to fill the vacuum created when the diaphragm is expanded. Using check valves, the water is forced out the discharge hose when the motor compresses the diaphragm. With each cycle, the water is alternately sucked in and then discharged.
