Sewage Grinder pumps have cutting blades that grind the raw sewage into a slurry before passing it through the discharge line. Grinding the sewage into a slurry also allows the pump to reach higher heads. Sewage Grinder Pumps are designed to handle the same type of materials as a Sewage Ejector Pump, but have the ability to pass tougher solids.

Grinder Pumps are often installed in a pressure sewer system using small-diameter pipes, typically 1-1/4 inch to 2 inch along with a sewage basin to collect the sewage from wastewater discharged from the bathrooms. The grinder pump station collects all of the wastewater from the home or business and grinds it into slurry. The wastewater is then pumped to a city sewer main or directly to a septic pump system on the property.

Welcome to Inspector Pumphead’s Frequently Asked Questions! I will be answering some of the most common questions we get on a specific topic. Some of this information may also be available elsewhere, but this feature will serve as a convenient one-stop source. In this edition, I’ll talk about sewage pumps and grinder pumps.

Are sewage pumps and grinder pumps the same thing?Sewage and grinder pumps are indeed related but are different in its construction and use. The idea that they are the same is a common misconception because many people will often use both terms interchangeably to refer to a basement pump that moves sewage water out of a building.

This is where taxonomy becomes important: all grinder pumps are sewage pumps, but not all sewage pumps are grinder pumps. Much like the old quadrilateral adage (“all squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares”), this aptly describes a relationship where one (sewage) is general and the other (grinder) is specialized. The key fact is that both pumps are built to move sewage when the sewage line is above the point of collection (such as with a basement toilet).

The difference between the two is the type and size of the solids that can pass through the pump. Sewage pumps can pass up to 2” waste solids. “Waste solids” in this instance generally refers to human waste (gross) or other ‘soft’ solids that can easily be broken down or dissolved. Harder and thicker solids will clog and eventually damage the pump.

Grinder pumps incorporate a cutter or cutting mechanism that macerates (grinds/chops) the solids into a fine slurry to be exported. The fine slurry can be pumped higher than the solids from the sewage ejector pumps.

Grinders are more costly than standard sewage pumps, require more power and are typically built for residential, commercial and/or light industrial applications where a sanitary sewer system might be strained by trying to process larger solids. Think motels or any place where a lot of people will use the system everyday without caring about what they flush. I’m talking about diapers, plastic, wipes, gloves, etc. So unless something very strange is going on at your house, you probably won’t need a grinder.

Sewage pumps are less expensive and more suitable for domestic and/or light commercial applications. Still, if you really want a grinder for more domestic applications, Liberty makes the PRG ProVore/Omnivore grinder pump series for just such a purpose.

Not exactly. While grinders are well equipped to macerate solids, they are not impervious to wear and tear over time. If things that should not be flushed down the toilet keep getting flushed down there, eventually, yes, even a grinder pump will suffer damage and have to be replaced. That is why you should do everything possible to make sure that people – whether they be employees, guests, tenants – do not abuse your system. As I always say, preventative care is the best way to ensure that your equipment keeps operating in good health for a long time.

A: Nope! It simply means that the pump has to be manually plugged in every time you want the pump to run. There is no mechanism to start the pump automatically.

Conversely, automatic pumps feature a mechanism that will start the pump in certain conditions, typically a float switch. There are a variety of different types of switches, but probably the easiest way to help you visualize it is with a tethered switch. When the water level in a pit or basin rises, the tethered float will “swing” upward and activate the switch, which in turn activates the pump.

A: It’s really just a matter of control: if you want to know exactly when your pump runs, how long it runs, how much water it pumps, etc. then you should buy a manual pump. If you’d rather just set up your pump system and let the amount of water determine its operation, buy an automatic pump. Generally speaking, our application engineers recommend getting an automatic pump with a piggyback float – you can always detach the float and run the pump manually if you so desire.

Widespread clogging of sewage disposal systems as a result of an increase in the disposal of plastics is causing many to rethink the pumps they choose. And foreword-thinking pump manufacturers are taking note and designing sewage pumps capable of shredding difficult solids that jam traditional solids-handling pumps. This has been happening in the commercial and industrial markets for quite some time, with specialty manufacturers like BJM developing high performance shredder pumps capable of shredding cell phones and sneakers with the ease of a blender whipping a smoothie.

“For years customers experiencing chronic clogging have called PumpProducts.com asking for a domestic grinder with these specs but there was never anything like it on the market,” says Product Expert Will Perillo. “Liberty Pumps designed the ProVore to operate in a residential setting, providing maximum efficiency and grinding power in a unit that can be plugged directly into a standard 115 volt outlet. We think it’s going to solve a lot of problems.”

In addition to eliminating the rewiring, control panels and electrical expertise required to install a standard 2hp grinder pump in a home, the ProVore features a 2” discharge that provides high flow rates (46 gpm) and allows for direct connection to existing sewer lines.

“Typically grinder pumps have a 1 ¼” discharge which limits flow and makes adapting to existing 2” sewage pumps an issue,” explains Perillo. “ProVore grinders come out of the box with a 2” discharge so there’s no piping adjustment necessary. This makes the ProVore ideal for new construction installations and for upgrading a home’s existing 2” sewage pump.”

We currently offer the following PRG-Series residential grinder pump Models: PRG101M 115V, 12a, Manual; PRG101A 115V, 12a, Automatic; PRG102M 230V, 6a, Manual; PRG102A 230V, 6a, Automatic.

The ProVore 380 is a 1 HP Residential Simplex grinder System designed for basement bathroom additions and remodeling projects. Comprised of a compact heavy-duty polyethylene basin and cover, it can be installed above or below floor level. Features include a 41 gallon capacity, patented V-Slice cutter technology that shreds difficult solids such as feminine products, rags, towels and wipes that can jam solids-handling pumps, and QuickTree technology that allows easy access and removal of switches without disturbing pump or plumbing. Ask about the P382XPRG101, 1HP, 115 volt model and the P382XPRG102, 1HP, 230 volt model.

The ProVore 680 is the duplex version of the same system for large residential applications. It has a 46 gallon capacity and contains two pumps to provide secure uninterrupted service, in addition to all of the features of the ProVore 380. We offer 1HP models in 115 and 230 volts.

Liberty has also developed the PDC Series ProVore Duplex Control System to monitor the operation of the ProVore 680. In addition to emitting audible and visual alarms when the system is out of order, it automatically alternates pump operation, equalizing wear and extending pump life. Ask about Models: PDC-115 115V, for PRG101-Series pumps and PDC-230 230V, for PRG102-Series.

The Omnivore LSG200-series grinder pumps are designed for use in systems that produce high amounts of wastewater. Think motels, apartment complexes, hotels, shopping centers – any type of facility, whether commercial or residential, with high frequency usage and high volume of waste.

LSG200 series pumps are constructed with a sturdy one-piece uni-body cast iron housing, while the impeller is 316 stainless steel. The impeller contains back vanes (or pump out vanes) to better clear solids. The pumps also features dual seals – one unitized silicon carbide, the other Viton double-lip – for extra protection from solids.

The pumps operates at 2 HP and features a 1-¼” discharge. Depending on the model, the pump could operate at 208-230 volts, 208/230 volts, 440-480 volts or 575 volts. Each model operates at either one or three phases of power.

The LSGX-series variations are ideal for multi-unit land developments that share a sewage system, such as apartment complexes. LSGX pumps are similar to their cousins the LSG200, except that they are 2-stage pumps designed for high head applications.

2-stage simply means that each LSGX pump has two stainless steel impellers. The double impellers increase the velocity and can drive the maximum head up to 180 feet.

Both the LSG200 and the LSGX are constructed with the same construction materials, outer dimensions and V-Slice cutter technology. Both series also have the same guide rail configuration. Thus, Omnivore pumps are easily interchangeable within the same basin and guide rail system.

The ProVore PRG-series is expressly designed for use in residential or home wastewater systems. ProVore pumps are equipped with Liberty’s patented V-Slice stainless steel cutter that is capable of turning solids such as plastic bags, feminine products and towels into a fine slurry to be collected and exported.

Each model in this series operates at 1 HP, 115 or 230 V, single phase power. The pumps have a 2 inch discharge and can be used as replacement pumps for systems that also have 2 inch discharge lines (that already use LE40 or LE50-series solids handling pumps). Automatic models include a wide-angled float switch with the exception of the PRG101AV which has an integral vertical float switch.

The Liberty ProVore 380-series is a compact simplex grinder package designed for residential sewage applications. Each unit includes a Liberty ProVore grinder pump, a polyethylene basin and QuickTree float technology. Some models may include alarm.

This Liberty ProVore 680-series is a compact duplex grinder system designed to operate in residential and light commercial sewage applications. This premium duplex grinder pump package is perfect for basement, bathroom additions and remodeling projects and includes 2x PRG pumps, a 24″ polyethylene basin and a controller. Indoor and outdoor models available.

Zoeller Grinder Pumps are offered in a wide variety, to help eliminate an entire household of “flushable” materials. Waste from water-using household materials such as toilets, bath tubs, washing machines, etc flow thru the pipes of the home or commercial building and into the grinder pump holding tank. Once the wastewater inside the tank reaches a specific level the pump will turn on, grind the waste into a fine slurry and pump it out to a septic tank or sewer system. Grinder pumps are capable of handling sanitary napkins, hand wipes, etc. Think of a grinder pump as a household garbage disposal but on a larger scale. These pumps are beneficial to homes, hotels, apartments, restaurants and places where it is unclear of what is going down the toilet. Keep in mind: Grinder pumps are not trash pumps. Some of the top Zoeller Grinder Pumps are called the 800 Series (or “The Shark” series). “The Shark” grinder series features Models 818, 819 and 820. These Zoeller Grinder Pumps are engineered to grind and pump tough materials, for example, disposable wipes, which are now found in today’s wastewater applications. These models feature a new 2-blade angled cutter design, which provides superior grinding with sharper cutting edges. These blades decrease solids less than ⅛”. Other top Residential Zoeller Grinder Pump’s are Models 803, 805 & 807 which are also part of the Shark Series. These are the World’s first integral automatic grinders. These grinders are used on difficult residential applications where ejectors struggle. PumpProducts.com also offers “The Shark” series cavity grinder, such as Model E810, which is designed for grinding and pumping sanitary sewage from submersible lift stations. Each Zoeller model is 100% factory tested. Zoeller Grinder Pumps are widely known in the plumbing industry. That’s why here at PumpProducts.com we sell nothing but the best! The dreaded call back. For plumbing contractors it’s a recurring nightmare. That’s why many of our customers in the plumbing and contracting trades opt for Zoeller Grinder Pumps for applications with chronic clogging issues. Zoeller grinder pumps are engineered to cut through the tough solids that jam ordinary sewage pumps and lead to repeated call backs. The Zoeller grinder pump line ranges from small indoor and outdoor residential systems using a fractional HP grinder, to larger commercial and industrial pumps for applications that require the industry standard 2 HP grinder.

Zoeller’s 915 Grinder Pump System is the industry’s first, 1/2 HP, 115 volt grinder pump for residential and light commercial use. The system was designed for home basements without a gravity sewer that require pumping wastewater up to a municipal sewer. The 915 Grinder System efficiently focuses the torque of a 1/2 HP grinder and 115 volt motor directly on to the cutting surface so that large solids that would clog an ordinary ejector system are easily ground down. Compared to traditional 2 HP systems, this package greatly reduces the initial outlay and annual operating costs of a grinder system.

For applications notorious for clogging, the industry-leading 840 Shark Series Grinder Pump is specially designed to reverse in direction every other cycle in order to prevent plastic, rope and other debris from getting trapped in the scissor action cutter assembly. As the only single phase automatic reversing pump on the market, the 840 Shark Grinder is the clear choice for light commercial and industrial applications prone to tough clogging. Zoeller maintains a high level of quality by factory testing each pump under water prior to shipping to the customer. This testing ensures that the pump will operate out of the box every time.

Model 203 : tank and mini-grinder pump (standard rear outlet toilet with a discharge height of 4″ (10 cm) from floor to centerline must be purchased separately)

The Zoeller 800 Series (or “The Shark” series) grinder pumps are light, efficient models used in residential systems. They can handle typical household waste solids such as sanitary products and handwipes. Some models include the “Tri-Slice” cutter technology with three independent cutting channels that provides over 250,000 cuts per minute. The hardened stainless steel Tri-Slice cutter provides scissor action style cutting that helps eliminate binding and roping of material around the cutter.

“The Shark”, is a uniquely designed single directional grinder pump with integral control. These pumps are constructed of corrosion-resistant cast iron with a powder coated epoxy finish and stainless steel hardware. The thermally protected, oil-filled motors and external cooling fins allow the pumps to run cooler. This series is available in single phase and three phase configurations.

The 915 is the industry’s only 115 volt, 1/2 HP grinder pump that stands up to the toughest applications where traditional sewage pumps fail. This job-ready system uses Zoeller’s innovative, stainless steel cutter, which requires little or no maintenance. The built-in scouring system and baffle keep debris from obstructing float operation. Small yet powerful, this efficient 7 amp pump handles most debris including: socks, denim, sanitary napkins, diapers, etc. The system is 100% preassembled for ease of installation.

Goulds RGS2012 Series Submersible Grinder Pumps are specifically designed for high head sewage applications where installing a gravity system is not practical. They are ideal for grinding in pressure sewage applications. The cutting system is a unique anti-roping design with a two blade rotary cutter threaded to the shaft. The stationary cutter ring is reversible allowing you to extend the service life. The ring are made with 440 C hardened stainless steel to handle the toughest waste solids.

The pump casing itself is rugged cast iron and can be adapted to fit with the proper guide rail system. The motor shaft is 300 series stainless steel. The pump and motor are designed for continuous operation when fully submerged. The main difference among the models listed here is the type of power cord included with each; some have bare leads for use in connection with a control panel or junction box while other have three prong grounding plugs. All models are single phase.

The Goulds 1GD series Grinder Pumps are a premium series designed for high head sewage applications where a gravity system is not practical, as well as pressure sewage applications. The Goulds 1GD series can handle solids up to 3″ in diameter. The cutting system is of an anti-roping design in which the hardened cutter is keyed to the motor shaft for positive drive.

The cutter ring is designed for reversal when the first side of the ring wears out, doubling its lifespan and reducing maintenance costs. The cutting system has been tested to pass items found in normal wastewater. The cutting system is paired with a silicon bronze semi-open multi-vane impeller. The impeller includes pump out vanes for mechanical seal protection. The volute is cast iron and adaptable for the A10-12 guide rail system for ease of installation. A key feature of the 1GD series is the dual mechanical seals with a silicon carbide vs. silicon carbide outer seal and a ceramic vs. carbon inner seal. An optional seal sensor probe indicates potential leakage to the control panel (requires optional seal fail circuit in the panel).

The motor is fully submerged in an oil-filled chamber surrounded by high grade turbine oil for efficient heat dissipation, lubrication and protection. The pump is rated for continuous duty when fully submerged, but can be run dry without damaging the components (see operation guidelines below). The sever duty rated, oil and water resistant power cable includes an epoxy seal on the motor end to provide a secondary moisture barrier in case of outer jacket damage, as well as to prevent oil wicking.

Goulds Pumps features the RGS series. This series is a Grinder Pump System Packages which is an all-in-one units designed for use in high head sewage applications where a gravity system is not practical, as well as for pressure sewage systems. Both simplex (single pump) and duplex (dual pump) models are available. Control panels and float switches rated for either indoor or outdoor use are available for pairing with both simplex and duplex units.

The RGS2012 pumps operate at 2 HP, 208/230 volts, single phase power. The maximum flow is 41 GPM, the maximum TDH is 95′ and the maximum submergence level is 50′. The grinder uses an anti-roping cutter system with a two blade rotary cutter threaded to the shaft, while the stationary cutter ring is reversible for extended service. The cutter is paired with a silicon bronze semi-open impeller with non-overloading two vane design and pump out vanes for mechanical seal protection.

Control panel features vary by indoor/outdoor and simplex/duplex. Each panel does include a high level alarm circuit, a through door mounted pump run light, a top mounted high intensity flashing red light and a corrosion proof alarm horn. The panel may also include color coded components (wiring, screw type terminals), a field wiring diagram and a panel schematic for easy installation and field servicing. Auxiliary alarm contacts for remote connection may also be available.

Duplex panels include an alternator selector switch which allows the user the choice of either automatic alternation or a single pump operation, which can be useful if one pump is down for maintenance. A built-in lag delays the pump starting lag for five seconds if both pumps attempt to start simultaneously after a power outage.
