A Philippine Airlines plane overshot a runway and plowed into a tropical forest while landing in a southern city early Friday, injuring 19 passengers and crew members, officials said.

The Airbus A320, flying from Manila to Butuan city, sustained extensive damage and came to a halt in a banana and coconut grove, airline spokesman Rolando Estabillo said.

Nineteen people suffered minor injuries, said police Superintendent Elmer Doyo. The pilot and co-pilot suffered neck and nose injuries, and several people were taken to a hospital, Estabillo said.

Estabillo said the airport in Butuan, about 490 miles southeast of Manila, was closed until Saturday while the plane and the runway were being inspected. Butuan airport manager Emmanuel Costelo said the plane"s two engines were damaged.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said yesterday it will conduct a special investigation into why a Korean Air Lines jet overshot the runway while landing at Niigata International Airport in Japan, Monday night.

According to the ministry and the company, KAL’s flight #763, which departed from Incheon International Airport at 6 p.m. Monday, overran the runway by about 15 meters while landing in Niigata at 7:41 p.m. No one was injured. The nation’s flag carrier said 106 passengers and nine crew were on board and all the passengers were safely transported to the arrival gate on buses.

KAL, an affiliate of Hanjin Group, said the Boeing 737-900 successfully touched down but the front landing gear of the plane ended up on the grass beyond the end of the runway.

“The accident seemed to happen after the plane failed to reduce its speed, but the company is trying its best to figure out the exact cause,” an official from KAL said. “We can’t judge at this moment whether the accident was caused by a mechanical or pilot error.”

Korea’s transport ministry said that although no one was injured and no damage was done to the aircraft, it will investigate to find out if the aircraft was properly maintained and the pilots followed standard procedures.

The accident occurred nearly a month after an Asiana Airlines flight crash landed at San Francisco International Airport killing three passengers and injuring 180.

The ministry said the overrunning of a runway is considered a “semi-accident” under aviation law but since the Asiana crash raised safety concerns, it will conduct a thorough investigation. The ministry said it will join an investigation on site when Japanese authorities send a request.

To improve its systems, the ministry has been operating an aviation safety committee from July 31. The 46-member committee includes not only government officials but experts from various sectors such as psychology professors and civic group leaders.

The Mactan-Cebu International Airport was closed after an Airbus A330 from Inchon, South Korea, departed the runway during its third landing attempt at the airport around 11:07 p.m. local time.

Authorities said that the 173 aboard were safe despite that a portion of the aircraft’s underbelly ripped away in the incident, according to The Associated Press.

According to FlightRadar24, the aircraft, which is equipped to carry more than 270 passengers, had made two landing approaches in poor weather before the runway excursion on the third landing attempt.

A damaged Korean Air plane remained stuck in the grass at a Philippineairport Monday after it overshot a runway in rainy weather the night before. No injuries were reported among the 162 passengers and 11 crewmembers who escaped from the aircraft using emergency slides.

Dozens of flights have been canceled and Mactan-Cebu International Airport, one of the country’s busiest, remained closed due to the stalled aircraft at the end of its lone usable runway.

The terrifying close call prompted a public apology from Korean Air’s president and a vow from one of Asia’s most prominent airlines to take steps to prevent a recurrence.

“We always prioritize safety in all of our operations, and we truly regret the stress and inconvenience brought to our passengers,” Korean Air President Woo Keehong said in a statement.

The front underbelly of the plane was sheared off and its nose was heavily damaged. The plane lay tipped forward on a grassy area with its front landing wheel not visible and emergency slides deployed at the doors. A ripped-open hole was also visible at the top of the plane near a front door.

Philippine officials said the plane’s remaining fuel would be siphoned off before efforts begin to remove the aircraft at the runway’s end. Authorities were also assessing if the other aircraft that are stranded at the airport could be allowed to fly out safely.

The Airbus A330 flying from Incheon, South Korea, attempted to land twice before overrunning the runway on the third attempt, Korean Air Lines Co. said in a statement.

There"s another use for cooking oil and other byproducts from forestry and farming: powering jets. Airbus wants all its planes running on sustainable jet fuel by the end of the decade, and the fuel is much better for the environment than kerosene, says Amanda Simpson, vice president of research and technology at Airbus Americas.

I understand its meaning in the context, but what does it exactly mean? I tried to Google the idiom, but I found only one hit in Urban Dictionary whose definition doesn"t seem to fit in the context (I don"t want to put it here).

I can"t find the origin of the idiom. I would like to know when and how the idiom started to mean what it means now. I can just speculate it could have started as a military term.

An airport in France"s southern Mediterranean coast closed indefinitely on Saturday after a cargo plane overshot its runway on landing. The plane finished nose-down in water of an adjacent lake.

Three people aboard the Boeing 737 plane were rescued unharmed, Associated Press reported as the airport was closed to passenger and cargo flights until the plane could be moved, authorities said.

The cargo plane left the runway and ended up with its nose and at least one engine dipping into the water. The plane had flown south from Paris Charles de Gaulle airport to Montpellier in the early hours of Saturday.

The XM655 aircraft was on a trial high-speed run when it failed to slow down as intended – and ended up in a field, narrowly avoiding ploughing into the road.

Experts put the accident down to a malfunction of a piece of equipment in the cockpit, which meant the bomber went at high speed for two seconds longer than it should.

But it had been due to taxi down the runway at an event on Sunday commemorating the 40th anniversary of the “Black Buck” raids during the 1982 Falklands conflict.

The XM655 Maintenance and Preservation Society, which looks after the aircraft, cancelled the event, saying although the bomber was largely undamaged, a lot of inspection work was needed.

The society wrote on Facebook: “Due to a malfunction of a piece of equipment in the cockpit, the aircraft remained at full power for approximately two seconds longer than intended.”

Explaining what went wrong, it wrote: “After satisfactorily completing low speed steering and braking tests on runway 05/23, the aircraft was taken onto runway 18/36 for a trial high speed run.

“This resulted in excessive speed and less distance in which to stop, and the aircraft passed beyond the end of the runway on to the agricultural area, stopping just before the airfield perimeter.

“The failed equipment was an air speed indicator which had been tested and found satisfactory six days ago, and which started working normally before the end of the run.

This means that the earth"s population is currently consuming the resources of future generations. The Earth Overshoot Day fell this year on July 29, which is the earliest date ever, according to a report from the Global Footprint Network.

Earth Overshoot Day marks the day when human demand for food, fiber, timber, and carbon absorption (global Ecological Footprint) exceeds the amount of biological resources which Earth"s ecosystems can renew in the whole year (global biocapacity).

Slovakia"s Overshoot Day, calculated by Global Footprint Network, fell on May 27 last year, but it came earlier in 2019.Therefore, Slovakia"s current Overshoot Day suggests that Slovaks need 2.6 planets to satisfy their needs.
