Overshot gates (also known as pivoting weir gates) are used to control upstream water levels. Versatility, efficiency, and safety are the primary reasons the Fresno Overshot Gate is the method of choice for municipal, agricultural, and industrial canal water control.

The Overshot Gate is simply an overflow style adjustable weir. It consists of a rectangular steel panel, hinged across the bottom, which is raised and lowered by two cables attached to the upper corners of the gate leaf. Basically, liken it to a drawbridge placed in a canal.

The upstream water level is controlled (and can be measured) by raising or lowering the gate leaf via the cable hoist system which can be operated either manually or electrically. Hydraulically, the overshot gate is a moveable weir.

Control valves and adjustable weirs allow the flow conditions to be varied independently at the entry to and exit from the working section. The working section can be flooded to create a closed conduit or operate partially filled as an open channel.

A removable panel in the roof of the working section allows models of typical hydraulic structures to be installed, namely; a sharp crested weir, broad crested weir (also used to create a culvert) and Ogee weir.

The Hampden Model H-6990 Tilting Water Channel and Gate System is designed for use as a general purpose center pivot flume. With it, one can demonstrate and investigate steady and unsteady flow, sediment transportation, weirs, sluice gates and wave phenomena. The channel consists of a head tank, working section and a tail tank.

Flow Visualization Channel consists of a base with inlet tank, adjustable feet, clear plastic channel, undershot weir, overshot weir, and dye injection system. Unit comes with broad crested weir, narrow crested weir, two aerofoils, and two cylinders.

The Hampden Model H-6940 Multi-Purpose Flume has been developed to investigate the basic principles of fluid mechanics. Among the investigations covered are various weirs, flume, gate siphon and spilling.

The inlet tank incorporates a stilling arrangement to diffuse the water flow prior to entry into the channel, ensuring smooth uniform flow. The level in the working section of the flume is controlled using an overshot weir at the discharge end.
