Transmission should be checked after every trip, and if water or dirt is found in transmission, change oil. Under normal conditions oil should be changed every 100 work hours. Clean and grease Tong Head and Backup Tool after every trip, use kerosene or solvent and a wire brush for cleaning. After cleaning, apply cup grease to jaws, pins, ring gear and top seal. Hazards of steam cleaning Tong Head are: Water will be forced by top seal into transmission. also removing all lubricants from top seal and causing it to harden. If steam cleaning is used, Guide Bell should be bolted on place and after cleaning, the transmission should be checked for the presence of water.
