I asked an old, established RV dealer owner what the best power jack brand was. He said they all have issues. Any electrical device exposed to the elements has potential for corrosion, weather damage, etc.

Search the forum. An alternative is a minor modification, using a 1/2" bolt with hex head, matching socket and a cordless drill. The drill is normally out of the weather and useful for other duties, does the same power jack task, & this mod costs about $2 tops. Some simple drilling (machining) of the bolt is required. I learned of this mod at the Mississippi Rendezvous a few weeks ago, returned the other day from that extended road trip & got my 1/2" bolt yesterday, and intend to do this mod soon. Kudos to Bill from Missouri for turning me on to this.

Search the forum. Others have detailed it, I believe. If you"re a push button kind of fellow, buy the power jack. I agree, they can be useful. If you"re a hacker, try the mod. It is completely & quickly reversible. I can"t detail describe this mod, as I haven"t accomplished it...yet. Others have described it in detail, here, or somewhere. It"s a simple mod, I"m told, as it"s been described to me.

Same, thing. My jack sort of stopped and was dead. However, the little LED light was still functional, so I *knew* power was getting through. I took the entire thing apart looking for bad connections, corrosion, etc. Nothing.

However, after replacement, everything worked as expected. So, I swapped the old fuse back in and got the same behavior -- LED light would work, but the jack would not respond. Put the new fuse back in, and it works.

I don"t know if that was due to the shop"s experience with several Smart Jacks shorting out or if that is the new replacement policy from Grand Design.

Shopping for a new RV is fun; however, finding the perfect fit for you and your family can take some time.  When we were shopping for our last RV, an absolute must-have item on our priority list was auto-leveling. We had many frustrating moments with our prior RV when leveling proved to be difficult – like having to start over and connect the truck back to the trailer. An aftermarket leveling jack would’ve come in handy.

We have had our RV with auto-leveling for the past three years and it has been wonderful. Yet, about three months ago, Melinda noticed a small amount of fluid on one of the jack’s pad. Sure enough, the jack was leaking a bit of hydraulic fluid, which was pooling up on the pad.

This wasn’t something we could ignore so we had to get a replacement jack. We called Lippert Components right away and provided them with a few numbers off our existing jack so they could order the correct jack for us.

Before you get started replacing your leveling jack, you’ll need a good set of socket wrenches, a torque wrench, some “Pig” Oil Absorbent Pads, good lighting to see everything, a hydraulic hose plug (Matt used “Pig’s Tail Plugs“) and a nice creeper board is always helpful when working under the RV.
