A rotary table is a piece of rig equipment sometimes referred to as a turntable. The majority of rotary tables or turntables are driven by a chain (much like a heavy-duty bicycle chain). This chain needs to be kept well lubricated, in order to stop it from seizing up.

Most rotary tables, including the refurbished National C-495 rotary table we have for sale, are fitted with a rotary lock. When this lock is engaged, it can stop the turntable from moving at all, or just in one specific direction. A National rotary table might be used by rig crew instead of tongs, to facilitate the fabrication of break out pipes.

Maintenance of this type of rig equipment is pretty straightforward. There are rotary bushings in the middle of the turntable. It is these bushings that are connected to kelly bushings to produce the rotation needed for drilling. Removing these bushings allows other pieces of rig equipment, such as drill bits, to be pushed through the turntable. The hole in the middle of the National C-495 rotary table is known as the bowl. The bowl is where slips are put, to keep the drill string held up during connections and pipe trips.

Cameron rotary tables range from 27 1/2 in to 60 1/2 in and feature a large oil capacity that adds to the unit"s durability. The rotary table includes a forged-steel fabricated housing and a heat-treated forged-steel turntable. The A-688 direct drive rotary table with air bearings provides extremely high resolution and geometric performance. The angular resolution of this high precision air bearing spindle is 0.0015µrad (0.00003 arcsec), and flatness and eccentricity are specified better than 175nm and 300nm, respectively. This is made possible by high resolution, absolute measuring feedback encoders, and low-cogging frameless and slotless torque motors. The A-688 rotary table can be used in any orientation. Air bearing spindles guarantee a virtually unlimited service life with no wear, and zero required maintenance. As with all PI air bearings tables, the A-688 spindle is clean room compatible and requires no lubrication.

PI uses EtherCat based, high performance motion controllers ideally suited for closed-loop control of the rotation tables. Advanced algorithms are available to deal with changing load conditions and to suppress external disturbances.
