June 1925 MachineryJohn B. Stevens, J. Goldsmith, and R. Frankel, who were connected for over twenty-five years with the Garvin Machine Co. of New York City, have bought the entire screw machine line made by that company. The machines, as well as replacement parts, will be made by the new concern. These men have also purchased the Garvin grinder line, including a bench grinder now known as the Stevens grinder, and the No. 3 universal cutter and surface grinder. A New York office will soon be established, but inquiries will be handled by John B. Stevens, P. O. Box 1116, New Haven, Conn., or Spring and Varick Sts., New York City.

1925-07-23 American Machinist.Reuben Frankel, for many years connected with the Garvin Machine Co., as assistant to George K. Garvin, has become associated with John B. Stevens and Julius Goldsmith in carrying on the manufacture and sale of many of the machines and parts of the old Garvin line. Mr. Stevens and Mr. Goldsmith were both associated with the Garvin organization for upward of twenty-five years, and are thoroughly familiar with the products. Offices have been established at Spring and Lafayette Street, in New York, and papers of incorporation have been filed.

Screw machines, duplex millers, duplex slotters, cutter and reamer grinders, surface grinders and oil pumps previously manufactured by the Garvin Machine Co., New York, are being built and marketed by John B. Stevens, Inc., 27 Cleveland Place, New York. The same company manufactures the Stevens screw head slotters, hand or speed lathes, milling machine vises, multiple spindle centers and duplex horizontal drilling, boring, tapping and threading machines. It will act as distributor for the Carvin cam cutters, profilers, hand millers, and air devices of the Frew Machine CO., Philadelphia, and will be agent for the Skinner-Garvin air chucks of the Skinner Chuck Co., New Britain, Conn. J. B. Stevens, president and treasurer of John B. Stevens, Inc., J. Goldsmith, vice president, and R. Frankel, secretary, were connected for many years with the Garvin Machine Co.

It has a 36:1 gear ratio instead of a 72:1 like some other tables, but that also means you"re cranking less to get from one position to the next. It"s solid, and seems to be machined to a better fit and finish than typical Chinese stuff. It"s made in India, and ships from there via Fedex air. I got mine in about 3 days.

I purchased a 6" H/V rotary table with the tailstock and indexing plates from Shars last spring. The price was about the same as the one from Grizzly. It is a Chinese made unit, but works quite well in my book. The only thing I didn"t like about it was the color of the paint on it, it is red and blue. Looks kinda bright! It works well, is nice and tight, and I really have no complaints. I believe that a Phase II or Vertex might be of slightly better quality, but I cannot say for sure. The new model from Shars has three slots instead of four like mine. Three slots makes it easier to mount a chuck to the table, but four slots is not a problem, I can easily make an adapter for a chuck. Their new 6" model also uses an MT3 taper, whereas mine uses an MT2 taper, which works for me as I already have a bunch of MT2 stuff for my Clausing 8520 mill. The table by itself currently sells for $285 plus shipping, and is available with tailstock and index plates for $503 plus shipping. I cannot say that it is the best for the money, simply that I am happy with mine.

The 200RT Series Rotary Tables are designed for precise motor-driven rotary positioning and indexing. These tables are designed to function independently or in conjunction with linear tables used for precision automation applications. Their low profile design minimizes stack height in multi-axis configurations and enables them to fit in many places where other motorized rotary devices cannot.
