Troyke super precision, heavy-duty manual rotary tables range in size from 10" to 30" in diameter. The Manual Series features a rigid manual rotary table design and can be mounted horizontally or vertically. These precision manual rotary tables are designed to accept dividing attachments, encoders, variable speed drives and a variety of tooling and workholding options.
A while back future work would finally put me in need of a "real" rotary table, so having no local sources I went looking on eBay and found this 9" Troyke. The Troyke name spoke for itself, and as it was without the excessive table height you find on most imported RTs nowadays, this one fit the bill. At the time there were maybe five or six 9" eBay Troykes for sale in various conditions - from excellent (and expensive), to beaten-up and not so expensive. But one, the cheapest, caught my eye.
The short description read in so many words, "Old Troyke 9", good condition, but dirty", and the single photo confirmed the dirty part. I emailed the seller and asked him to give me a little more information, and asked him to be honest, and he replied, "I"m 85 years old and closing down a family-owned machine & grinding shop. We bought this RT many years ago to do a one-off job and it"s been on a shelf collecting dust ever since. I"ll let you have it for $175.00, shipped." So I decided to trust him and I bought it. I figured that if it turned out to be junk I could always resell the carcass and recoup some of my loss.
When I unboxed it, it was indeed just filthy, covered in a dense gritty grime, but with no immediately visible damage. A full disassembly, soaking, and cleaning showed me it was practically NEW. There wasn"t a mark or rust anywhere and on the underside of the table the final fitter had scratched his name and date . . Feb 1953. I also saw that most moving parts showed signs of hand-fitting and the whole thing was designed to allow "taking up" and rebuilding. The only thing I did to it was to scrub up the base and apply a fresh coat of machine grey enamel. After so long the C.I. table is darkened with age but the reddish tinge you see isn"t rust, and isn"t visible in person. The crank handle and collars are just as they appeared from under the grime.

I"ve been thinking of getting a rotary table for use on my bridgeport, but haven"t fully formed an idea about what I really want. Based on what I"ve seen, I"m starting to think that I probably want to end up with 2, first a smaller one that would either do horizontal and vertical mounting or adjustable angle, probably in the 6-10" range (small enough that I can easily move), and then a larger one like a big, used bridgeport one for larger work.
Well, I got one as a gift for my birthday a couple of days ago (a PhaseII), and after getting a good look at it close up I realized that I"m probably going to end up returning this one and going with something else. The biggest thing is slot sizes... it has an indexing piece for use up on end that looks like it is intended for one slot size, and the slots on the table face are a smaller size, both smaller than the standard slots/holddowns that I have for the bridgeport. Seems like it would be a hassle mount it down to the table securely and then I"d need another set of hold down hardware just for use with the table.
