Weeks ago, Aquarion Water Company must have come a’calling—and since I am visitor-proof, they left an urgent notice on our doorknob. By the way, nothing says *urgent* like a white luggage tag on the front door. I was instructed to contact the company immediately regarding a water leak on our property.
Aquarion refused to be ignored, sending a big white van to pay me a visit. They really stepped it up from the white door tag. This time, the dog alerted me to the vehicular presence in the driveway, and that is where I met my fate. I perp-walked out to the technician feeling rather guilty. After a boots-on-the-ground consultation, I was asked a question that no one in New Canaan is prepared to answer in the affirmative: Do you have water line safety valve insurance?
Ummm, no. You mean those silly letters that I throw away every month and say, “Ha, what sucker buys safety valve insurance?” It was made very clear why the insurance is worth the investment and it was painful. All of the sudden, I had become the New Canaan version of Diane Keaton’s character from “Baby Boom,” and was quite literally, drowning in homeownership hell.
That said, I was quoted up to $10,000 if my leak hide-and-seek project was major. This was not what I had bargained for when I threw away all of those safety valve insurance mailers.
It"s the same story as others - this company is not serious. I called on a Tuesday for a broken washing machine. I got an appointment for Friday 1am to 5am window, got a confirmation email. "Customer Service" told me at 5 pm that there won"t be a technician coming after all after we waited for 4 hours at home. They suggested another appointment in 5 days! This is a joke company who waits for more than a week for a technician for an essential appliance. Whirlpool: we should have have called Mastertech in the first place - do not set up appointments for your customers with this company (A&E). It makes you look bad as well.
He left and I proceeded to try to clean the washer with the product and the washer stalled. There was smell of burning rubber and it completely stopped working. The motor had burned out. I called and explained what had happened and they told me it would be a week before they could return. We purchased a washer from a local appliance store the next day. A&E billed me for the service call and said that cleaning the washer was not under the warranty. No matter how I tried to explain that that was not the problem, they were not willing to budge on the bill. Stay away from this company. They are only out to make money and they will do whatever it takes to cheat the customer. I have never had such an awful experience.Read full review
Needless to say, my wife was emotionally stressed and sick to her stomach. Unfortunately, my 9-year old daughter was again present and became very scared. They left the house immediately and called the police dept. The police kind of giggled and asked what she wanted them to do. I"m seeking legal advice for Privacy/Civil Law breaches and Intentional Infliction of Emotional Stress. My wife and daughter are now afraid to be alone in our own home. This idiot of a service technician has our home phone number and address, after being terminated and having his company cell phone confiscated. My family is also afraid that he will just show up at our front door. A&E has a very serious problem with regards to privacy and respect of client private information.Read full review
The Maytag washer was making a loud noise when it was running. The repair technician ordered some parts that came in less than a week. He was able to repair the washer. I was very pleased with the service technician. He was very curious and knew what he was doing. His name was Steve (# **). I received several phone calls from the company checking on the progress of the repair. I would give an overall 5 stars.
I called them out to repair or replace a non-functional ice maker. Guy quotes an exorbitant price for a new unit but tells me it"s about half for a rebuilt one and they come from the factory so usually not a problem. So, I figure I"m getting scammed but the guy will want a trip charge if we refuse and I hate small claims court. Just about 91 days later, the unit fails. My wife calls the company expecting maybe they will work with us, something like that; instead, she encountered the most rude and abusive person she has ever spoken with.
Hey, if they had nicely told us that we"re out of luck because the warranty expired, I wouldn"t bother to post this. The fact is they are rude, disrespectful, and they do not deserve your patronage. Use someone else or you are bound to be disappointed. I"m sure the rebuilt parts they carry are discards or factory thirds or fourths. The economy is bad, and people need to repair rather than replace, so these people think they can do whatever they want. Do not use this company for anything.Read full review
The white insulation in my Whirlpool oven door was protruding from behind the door panel so that it was visible through the glass. The technician did not want to fix it, saying that nothing was wrong with it. He became very belligerent and rude. All that was needed was a trim with a knife. (A 12-year-old could have done it.) I did service work for 45 years, so I am well aware of how this should have been handled. He also threatened me with voiding my warranty. This man, in any way, should never be allowed to work with the public and is a disgrace to your company. His name is Ronnel with ID# **.
A&E Factory Service was supposed to fix my oven. Instead of taking an existing part out of the oven to be repaired, they lost the part and then never returned my phone calls and hung up several times when I tried calling to resolve the problem. I"ve never written a bad review for anything. However, I feel compelled to let the public know about this unprofessional, rude and awful company.
A&E Repair is a total fraud and rip-off of a company. One of their reps came to fix my broken Kenmore thermostat oven knob more than two weeks ago. He didn"t have the part so he ordered it and said it would be here in "a couple of days." Five working days later, the part still had not arrived. I called the service number and was told by someone that someone in the Parts department would call me back the next day. No one called me the next day, so I called them back. A rep took down my number and said the same thing, that someone would call me back the next day and that I need ed to wait 48 hours for someone to call me back.
A day later, that still had not happened. I called the call resolution hotline and got a rep who checked my file and said that the order had been placed a week ago but the part still had not been shipped out from the manufacturers. He said it would be coming "any day now by UPS" and gave me a tracking number. As of today, two weeks after the visit and after I have fully paid the company, I still haven"t received my oven part. These people are a scam and incompetent to boot. They don"t even leave you with an invoice. When I called the first two times, I could hear a football game on TV in the background and all the reps cheering wildly. I will report this company to all the better business sites I know. I have never seen any company that was so brazenly indifferent to its customer needs.Read full review
I purchased a GE Harmony washer and dryer in August 2008. The warranty was with Expert Protection Major Appliances. In 2010, the washer stopped draining the water. Expert Protection sent A&E Factory Service to repair the machine. After several months of installing several parts, the machine was working. Six months later, the same problem occurred. Again, A&E returned. They began installing parts until they damaged the machine. The top of the drum is shredded, it leaks water, and is unusable. After filing several complaints, Expert Protection sent out another company, Appliance Repair Specialists. They began the same process of installing several parts. They stated that the machine is not worth repairing. It is too expensive. The machine is not worth it, but as long as Expert Protection continues to pay us to repair the machine, they will continue to order parts and attempt to repair. The warranty states that if the machine cannot be repaired within two attempts, it"s considered a "Lemon" and will be replaced. Expert Protection refuses to replace my washer. They continue to order parts and cannot repair the washer. What can I do to resolve this matter? Do I need to obtain an attorney?
The truck no. ** was observed recklessly endangering another vehicle, that was carrying a young child. This was in Far Rockaway, NY on Tuesday, Sept. 13, at about 4:00 pm. Your employee willfully ignored the traffic device. And your employee entered an intersection that was already occupied by the victim"s vehicle. It caused that vehicle to swerve and skid in a most dangerous manner, very close to causing a tragic accident! Your employee was either callously indifferent to state laws and public safety or seriously impaired, in a manner that would show up in a police investigation. As a representative of your company, I could not think of a more damaging image than what was presented by this repugnant and dangerous individual when he jeopardized the well being of a young child, not to mention the parent. It is my hope, and my wife"s, that this matter will be dealt with, with a swift and severe disciplinary action.
I bought a new Whirlpool gas water heater at Lowes on 03 Aug 2011 and it stopped working on 20 Aug. I called Whirlpool and they had me call A&E Service for a repair. Whirlpool shipped two new parts (gas valve & pilot assembly). I missed the appointment with A&E because the parts that were shipped did not arrive on time. I finally received the parts but had trouble with A&E setting a new time to come out. They had it scheduled for next week, 31 Aug, but that was not going to work for me. So, I called Whirlpool back and they got A&E to come out today, 25 Aug.
I asked them to pick up the parts and refund me my $140. They informed me it"s non-refundable but they will pick up the parts. Really?! This is not a repair company; this is a scam. They are horrible and unreliable. Maytag, take back your $800 worth of parts and give me my $140 plus $700 for the machine. Don"t use A&E!Read full review
“I received a brochure in the mail regarding Connecticut Water’s Linebacker Protection program. There’s scant detail in the information, but I gather it’s a program that insures the water line from the road to your house. Should one of those lines break the cost can run into the thousands of dollars and is borne by the homeowner, not the water company. Can you please tell me whether this is a legitimate program and whether the entire cost of a line breaking would be covered? Thanks.”
As for insurance offers from Connecticut Water and other utilities, Coyle said PURA does not regulate those programs, and terms and prices can vary from company to company. “Individual households should shop around and do their homework,” he said.
• Linebacker, $85/year. Covers the cost of repairing or replacing the service line, curb valve, and first shut-off valve, with a $10,000 limit per year.
• Linebacker Complete, $185/year. Linebacker Plan plus in-home plumbing coverage for internal water pipes, connected fittings, and valves but not leaking or broken water fixtures. Service fee/repair is $50 plus up to $2,000 for remaining plumbing repair.
So, how often do water service line leaks occur on private property? I contacted Kerry Martin, assistant to MDC’s CEO, who gave me the data for two north central Connecticut towns that the utility covers. Of course, the MDC won’t know about leaks if homeowners repair them without reporting them.
“Covered repairs” include “as many service calls as you need … to repair or replace a leaking, frozen, or permanently blocked exterior water-service line from your utility’s responsibility … to the water meter or main shut-off valve inside your home damaged due to normal wear and tear not accident or negligence.”

HAMPTON — Several hundred customers of Aquarion Water Company have signed up with Aquarion Services Company, a water company subsidiary, in an insurance program that would pay for repairs to individual water lines on homeowners? property.
The brochure encouraged people to contact their own insurance company, and McNerney noted that his homeowner"s insurance policy covers only part of any such repair work that might need to be addressed.
Michael McNerney"s wife, Lisa, said the issue is about education. "A lot of people don"t realize that the water company"s responsibility goes only to the property line. We didn"t know that," Mrs. McNerney said.
Under the program, all work done must be completed by a company referred contractor. Roberts said that is because the company wants to monitor the work carefully in order to keep insurance premiums down, and so the company has some control over the process.
Roberts said the insurance program "fills the gap between the curb valve where the water company"s responsibility ends and the property owner"s responsibility begins."
Brian Goetz, operations manager at Aquarion Water Company of New Hampshire, based in North Hampton, said he is aware of the program, but it is not run by the local company. "It provides some coverage over pipes that might be cracked by a deep freeze, settling, age, wear and tear ... it"s voluntary insurance," Goetz said.
A spokesperson at the state Public Utilities Commission said she was not aware of any complaints received at the PUC about the water company. PUC Executive Director Deborah Howland said that Aquarion Services Company does not fall under the PUC"s authority.
Aquarion Services Company is a division of Aquarion Water Company of Bridgeport, Conn. , which owns the local water distributor. ASC is based in Bridgeport, Conn.
At This Old House, we’ve reviewed agreements from the top home warranty providers, and evaluated them based on elements like plan structure, cost breakdown, customer reviews, and the claims process. In this review, we’ll discuss Carrier warranty plans to give you thorough, accurate information on the terms and conditions of their service contracts.
Carrier doesn’t provide traditional home warranty plans that cover multiple systems or appliances in one comprehensive package. Instead, the specific products homeowners purchased from Carrier are covered under the company’s own warranty plan.
In general, most home repair insurance companies charge between $300–$600 a year for home warranties and require service fees, which are paid by the homeowner directly to the technician at the time of repair or replacement. The average service fee in the home warranty industry is between $75–$125.
To make a claim, you must register your Carrier product online within 90 days of original installation. Carrier will need your date of installation, which is the date the homeowner purchased the home from the builder. If you can’t verify this exact date, then the warranty period begins 90 days from when the product was manufactured, as indicated by the model and serial number.
Installation, use, care, and maintenance must be normal and in accordance with instructions contained in the Installation Instructions Owner’s Manual and Company’s service information
Once you’ve identified an issue with your product, immediately contact Carrier. You can call Carrier at 1-800-227-7437, reach the company online, or notify the company in writing by certified or registered letter of any defect or complaint with the product, stating the defect or complaint and a specific request for repair.
Carrier is not accredited by the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and has an A- rating from customers. The company’s highest rating is a 3-star review, and most reviews noted poor support, delays in waiting for replaced units, and many appliances breaking much earlier than expected.
Though Carrier provides decent coverage for HVAC components, we think there are better options available for homeowners who want to protect other major systems and appliances in their homes.
We think the best overall home warranty provider is American Home Shield (AHS). It’s the oldest home warranty provider in the business and has a network of more than 15,000 licensed contractors. The company also covers 23 essential systems and appliances in its ShieldPlatinum™and ShieldGold™plans.
The This Old House Reviews Team backs up our home warranty ratings and recommendations with adetailed rating methodologyto objectively score each provider. We conduct research by speaking with company representatives, requesting quotes, analyzing sample contracts from each company, and conducting focus groups and consumer surveys. We then score each provider against our review standards for coverage, value, trustworthiness and transparency, availability, and customer service to arrive at a final score out of 100.
