Cable systems are deceptively simple in design, but done properly, they are actually highly engineered fall protection systems.

In a previous post titled “Is My Horizontal Lifeline Safe?”, we shared pictures of some home-made rat lines we have encountered in the field. Lifelines made from combinations of wire rope, wire rope clips, and turnbuckles may look safe, but these home-made solutions share little in common with the engineered lifelines we design and install at DFP.

The Guardian Fall Protection Poly Steel Rope is ideal for high-moisture environments. Nylon rope, when wet, will typically reduce in strength by between 10% to 15%, but unlike Nylon, Poly Steel Rope does not absorb water, so will not diminish in strength in wet conditions. This rope is also particularly strong when it comes to resisting damage from ultraviolet light, and its synthetic composition makes it especially resistant to cuts and abrasion, thereby increasing equipment lifetime. Poly Steel is ten times stronger than Polypropylene, and while it may become fibrous, this is just a result of normal wear, and does not indicate it needs to be replaced. It is 5/8 inches thick, and is available with a variety of component configurations, including a shock absorber, positioning device, 18 inch extension lanyard, and 2 double-locking snap hooks.

Miller SkyGrip™ Wire Rope Lifeline may be used in conjunction with approved Miller brand anchorage connectors to provide a temporary horizontal lifeline system that is quick and easy to install.

Systems consist of a top and bottom brackets for anchoring off the cable that runs the full span of the ladder, intermediate supports (installed every 25 ft) and a cable grab that follows the worker up and down the lifeline. All systems includes a shock absorber.
