The idea of working high may not change much, but the circumstances you’ll find yourself in change from one job to the next. The exact mechanics that keep a person safe require different types of equipment for specific work. If you’re working on a roof, the odds are pretty good that a vertical lifeline will be the most economical solution to keep you safe.

Vertical lifelines are often useful when you have to work on a roof, and you don’t have a ladder that safely allows you to do the job at hand. Vertical lifeline assemblies are versatile connectors that allow you to set the working distance, meaning they can be used for both fall arrest and fall restraint.

With a vertical lifeline rope, you have a lot of different choices. If you don’t want a shock absorber hanging off your back, get a lifeline with a shock absorber built in. If you want that shock pack with you wherever you go, use a rope grab with a shock absorber.

Depending on the type of work you’re looking to do, we’ve got various lengths to keep you safely covered. For the jobs that really have you working bigger areas, we have 100’ lifelines, but we also provide shorter lengths at 50’, 30’ and even 25’. It all depends on the work area and size of the roof. Although, always remember to be aware of a swing fall. Don’t know what a swing fall is? Give us a call or check out our blog and we’ll fill you in.

Most folks think lifelines when it comes to fall protection, but if you quiz them about how these systems work or when they are good fits for an application, they come up short. So what is a cable-based fall protection system, and what are the pros and cons of lifeline systems?

Cable fall protection systems take many names, including rat lines, HLL’s, and horizontal lifelines just to name a few. In their simplest form, cable fall protection systems consist of wire rope secured by a series of terminal and intermediate anchor points. By connecting a body harness and lanyard to a shuttle traveling the length of the line, a worker can safely move along a horizontal (or vertical) plane. Cable systems are deceptively simple in design, but done properly, they are actually highly engineered fall protection systems.

In a previous post titled “Is My Horizontal Lifeline Safe?”, we shared pictures of some home-made rat lines we have encountered in the field. Lifelines made from combinations of wire rope, wire rope clips, and turnbuckles may look safe, but these home-made solutions share little in common with the engineered lifelines we design and install at DFP.

With years of knowledge, our team can supply everything from wire rope through to individual and bespoke fittings used in these systems. Some of our main components are listed below:

M12 Thread with a swaging dimension of 12.5mm. This is smaller than the standard 16mm dimension usually associated with 8mm rope, which makes it popular among engineers swaging on site using an Electro/Hydraulic hand tool.

The Guardian Fall Protection Poly Steel Rope is ideal for high-moisture environments. Nylon rope, when wet, will typically reduce in strength by between 10% to 15%, but unlike Nylon, Poly Steel Rope does not absorb water, so will not diminish in strength in wet conditions. This rope is also particularly strong when it comes to resisting damage from ultraviolet light, and its synthetic composition makes it especially resistant to cuts and abrasion, thereby increasing equipment lifetime. Poly Steel is ten times stronger than Polypropylene, and while it may become fibrous, this is just a result of normal wear, and does not indicate it needs to be replaced. It is 5/8 inches thick, and is available with a variety of component configurations, including a shock absorber, positioning device, 18 inch extension lanyard, and 2 double-locking snap hooks.
