Wire rope clips are widely used for making end terminations. Clips are available in two basic designs; the U-Bolt and fist grip. The efficiency of both types is the same.

When using U-Bolt clips, extreme care must be exercised to make certain that they are attached correctly; Incorrect installation can reduce the working load limit by 40%. Below are general guidelines for installing wire rope clips.

The saddle shall be placed on the live end of the wire rope, with the U-bolt on the dead-end side—Remember the well-known saying: “Never saddle a dead horse.” Use at least two or three wire rope clips to secure the ends properly to the length of the rope, and tighten nuts evenly one by one until reaching the recommended torque.

Step 1. Turn back a specified amount of rope from the thimble or loop. The first clip must be placed one bridge width from the turned back rope tailor dead end of the rope, Apply U-Bolt over dead end of wire rope – live end rests in the saddle (Never saddle a dead horse!) Tighten nuts evenly, alternate from one nut to the other until reaching the recommended torque.

Step 3. When three or more clips are required, space additional clips equally between the first two – take up rope slack – tighten nuts on each U-Bolt evenly, alternating from one nut to the other until reaching recommended torque.

In accordance with good rigging and maintenance practices, the wire rope end termination should be inspected periodically for wear, abuse, and general adequacy. Periodically re-tightening of the nuts must be done at 10.000 cycles (heavy usage), 20.000 e.g. every 3 months, 6 months, annually.

Malleable clips are to be used for making eye termination assemblies only with the right regular lay wire rope and only for light-duty uses with small applied loads, such as handrails, fencing, guard rails, etc.

For various rope diameters, Fassadengrün has corresponding cross clamps, such as: SK 01515 (1.5-2 mm), SK 03012 (3 mm, available in AISI 304 and AISI 316), and SK 04015 (3-4 mm). They all have a graceful build but provide sufficiently strong holding strengths/clamping forces for your plant climbing systems. SK 03420 is suitable for security-relevant applications; due to the M10 thread, even stronger holding strengths are possible. There are SK 03099 and SK 03006 as more economical options; here, the crosses are not screwed but pressed with pliers... later corrections are then rarely possible at the cross point. The connector SK 34515 is particularly suitable for combinations of cable and rods because, with two separate grub screws, strong holding strengths are made possible. Most cable cross clamps are made of stainless steel A2; only SK 03444, SK 04444, SK 03420 and SK 03006 are made of A4.

FassadenGrün cross clamps have a greater holding strength compared with similar products imported from Asia, primarily due to the shallow depth of our threaded holes, which are flush with the deeper cross grooves (see photo), creating no significant height offset. Nevertheless, the work to form the internal thread deeply enough makes it more difficult and expensive to manufacture. Then, because no concave pressure for the ropes arises, they do not undergo any deformation and are held firmly by the cable clamps. however, because they are clamped on an anvil without being concave.

With large distances from intersection to intersection, i.e. large "meshes" of more than about 1 square meter, use a (wall-connected) cross mount instead of a floating cable clamp: See cable system

For mesh sizes well under 1 square meter, all points on the outer contours of the system are fitted with (wall connected) cross mounts; but inside the field, use floating cross clamps at cable intersections. See cable system

With mesh sizes of 30 x 30 cm and smaller, cross mounts on the edge of the field can also be exchanged for free-floating cross clamps. See this under cable system 5050.

Floating cross clamps can also facilitate the mounting of certain cable systems by serving as a temporary support, where the mounting starts with the outer frame (for example with 4020 and 7040). Instead of the two recommended vices, only one is then needed, and the other can be replaced by a floating cross clamp. If the respective kit does not already contain one or more cross clamps, a matching one can be ordered.
