In 1974, it was recognized by Paul Villgren, an industrial technical sales representative selling mining supplies and mining equipment that there was a void in Northern Ontario for a company to specialize in the sale of wire rope, chain and all rigging supplies. In January 1975 Sling-Choker Manufacturing Limited was established in Sudbury and the first products to be manufactured were wire rope slings for the mining and construction industry and chokers for the forestry sector. Next came the manufacture of nylon and chain slings. As the company grew and became recognized as a one stop shop for all rigging supplies it became evident that another location should be built to support our out of town customers’ needs. Industrial areas that were selected for new locations were researched for the need of our product and that no other company was in the same business there as we were. This way we could contribute to the local economy and community with new jobs and locally supplied product. The need for other industrial products stocked locally became evident and were added to our offering to customers. This philosophy was carried on to where Sling Choker has grown to 14 manufacturing locations in industrialized areas across Canada.

It is the intent of this paper to illustrate for the operators the importance of the critical stresses encountered and to provide a maintenance program designed to circumvent potential difficulties.

A Thunder Bay drilling company boss said exploration work is drying up in Northern Ontario and she’s finding greener pastures in the Caribbean. Barb Courte, president of Cobra Drilling and North Star Drilling, is dispatching four drills to the Dominican Republic this fall for a project with Unigold, a Canadian junior company.

Hugh Paxton, general manager of Wire Rope Industries Distribution in Thunder Bay, said the downturn in pushing exploration product out the door began in April.

A year ago, Osisko had 21 drills operating at its Hammond Reef gold projects in Atikokan and Wire Rope was supplying 12 rigs. That equipment has moved out as the company moves into the mine development phase.
