Covering everything from top-running and underhung cranes, monorails, electric, pneumatic, hand chain, and lever hoists, students will not only gain true competence in evaluating deficiencies and spotting safety-related items, but they will also learn to interpret Federal Regulations, National Standards, and Crane & Hoist Specifications.

Following the completion of the course, students will receive a Certification of Course Completion which remains valid for 3 years prior to your course date.

Each course delegate will be expected to complete a short theory test to demonstrate a good understanding of the course contents. If successful, a certificate will be issued. This will help the Employer to address certain legal requirements by being able to demonstrate employee competency. A detailed course handout is also provided for future reference.

Wire ropes undergo constant stress and wear through daily use. So, wire rope requires monthly inspection in accordance with this section to reduce the risk of failure and potential resulting injury or property damage. In addition, this section covers criteria to use in determining when to replace rope, and requires inspection of rope on equipment that has been idle for a month or more, before the rope and equipment can be returned to service.

A thorough inspection of all ropes shall be made at least once a month and a certification record which included the date of inspection, the signature of the person who performed the inspection and an identifier for the ropes which were inspected shall be kept on file where readily available to appointed personnel. Any deterioration, resulting in appreciable loss of original strength, shall be carefully observed and determination made as to whether further use of the rope would constitute a safety hazard. Some of the conditions that could result in an appreciable loss of strength are the following:

All rope which has been idle for a period of a month or more due to shutdown or storage of a crane on which it is installed shall be given a thorough inspection before it is used. This inspection shall be for all types of deterioration and shall be performed by an appointed person whose approval shall be required for further use of the rope. A certification record shall be available for inspection which includes the date of inspection, the signature of the person who performed the inspection and an identifier for the rope which was inspected.

D&A Wire Rope can proof test your equipment and certify that it is safe for continued use. We have a 50 Ton Pull Tester in our Austin, Texas facility and do our testing in house.

OSHA defines a proof test as a nondestructive tension test performed by the sling manufacturer or an equivalent entity to verify construction and workmanship of a sling. D&A Wire Rope proof tests equipment to determine that it is still functional as intended and capable of handling the intended working load limit (WLL). Proof testing typically places a controlled stress, equivalent to a specific multiple of the WLL on the equipment over a set period of time.

A pre-test inspection is performed to disqualify equipment unsuitable for continued use. Items are visually inspected for signs of damage or deformation against a set of guidelines suitable to the particular equipment. Then, each item is tested to the appropriate load limit. This is typically double the certified WLL, but can vary depending on the particular rigging. A post-test inspection is performed to insure that the test did not damage the equipment. Each certified piece of equipment is newly tagged and provided with a test certificate that provides definitive information showing the loading and time tested. Equipment unable to pass inspection will not be certified.

Equipment that fails inspection can sometimes be repaired. If repair is not possible, then the item must be removed from service. A member of our team will contact you to discuss options if a piece of equipment does not pass inspection or fails proof-testing.
