A drilling rig that hangs directly under the traveling block and directly above the kelly drive, that provides the ability for the kelly (and subsequently the drill string) to rotate while allowing the traveling block to remain in a stationary rotational position (yet allow vertical movement up and down the derrick) while simultaneously allowing the introduction of drilling fluid into the drill string.

An alternate method of rotating the pipe directly, with a motor connected to the top of the drill string, has been pursued for many years. These motors, commonly called power swivels, have usually been hydraulically powered and are used on small production and workover rigs. Their use has been limited because the hydraulic swivel has proven inadequate for drilling operations. Problems which plague power swivels are: inefficient pipe handling, overheating of hydraulic fluid, leaking and breaking hydraulic lines, and lack of power. The most significant of these has been the inability to efficiently handle pipe with the power swivel in the string. Pipe handling refers to actions such as tripping, connecting or breaking a stand up in the derrick, and connecting a single in the mousehole. A new generation of power swivels is now on the market and they have overcome these past problems. This paper reviews one of the first of these in use.
