According to a December 27 Mehr News Agency article, Dariush Raeisi, a senior official from the National Iranian Drilling Company (NIDC), has stated that Iran is even capable of manufacturing its own oilfield equipment and drilling rig systems. Until now, Iran has largely imported this equipment from foreign drilling rig companies, most often from China.
Raeisi said the NDIC currently owns just 68 drilling rigs and is leasing another five from various production rigs manufacturers. Only three of Iran’s rigs are actively drilling in the sea, with the rest stationed on land.
With an influx in production among Iran’s Mehr News Agency that this number will grow to 95 within the next five years, granting a significant boon to domestic manufacturing and industry. About 60% of the equipment needed to construct the rigs will be made domestically, and the rigs themselves will be constructed entirely within the country.
According to the Mehr News Agency, the NIDC launched a 12.5-million euro drill rig, called the Fath-93, that can drill onshore oil deposits as deep as 6,000 meters. Compared to Iran’s oft-outdated drill rigs, the Fath-93 promises to successfully seek out oil-rich deposits much more successfully.

The various aspects of the BOSIET training program can be explained below:The first step in the offshore training program is about Safety Inductions. BOSIET is just the first step in terms of offshore survival training courses. After gaining the required safety training through BOSIET, a person can opt for further emergency training courses. After the validity period is over, in order to continue with the validation there is a refresher course called FOET (Further Offshore Emergency Training) that is also offered. The duration of the FOET course is only one day. If by any chance, an offshore worker fails to take the refresher course then the person must repeat the entire BOSIET course again to continue working offshore.
BA-EBS:The aims and objectives of the training are to ensure that the delegate gains the required knowledge and understanding of the hazards and properties of a Compressed Air Emergency Breathing System (CA-EBS) and appropriate practical emergency response actions to take should the requirement for emergency deployment arise.

Laid out below are the basic jobs on an offshore drilling rig starting with the lowest level of the worker through to the Offshore Installation Manager (OIM) also including the support staff after the OIM.
Roustabout - The job of roustabout is about the easiest entry level job to get. It involves a lot of hard manual labor and long work hours. Roustabouts typically are involved on the main deck with painting and sandblasting, unloading pipe and other kinds of physical work. During breaks they also fill in for the roughnecks on the rig floor.
Roughneck - Higher up are the roughnecks also known as floor hands who do the jobs on the rig floor. The job of the roughnecks is to make connections in the drill pipe using pipe tongs or an automatic device known as an “iron roughneck”. Roughnecks “trip pipe” joints of drill pipe into and out of the hole when drill bits, etc, need to be changed.
Derrickman - Aligns and manipulates the sections of pipe or drill stem from a platform on the rig derrick during the removal and replacement of strings of pipe, or drill stem and drill bit. Assist in setting up, taking down and transporting drilling and service rigs. Supervises the roughnecks. This job entails working at height in the derrick usually at 170ft.
Crane Operators - Responsible for all crane operations on the rig and to and from the supply boats. Cranes are used to load supplies, such as casing, pipes and rig equipment, onto the oil rig. Crane operators also assist in general labour around the rig. Crane operators supervise the roustabouts and the crane operator assistant. This is a senior deck crew position.
Assistant Driller (AD)- Runs the work crew and takes information from the driller and gives it to their crew. While the assistant driller acts in a predominately supervisory role, they may also work alongside the roughnecks to run machinery. ADs train roughnecks to recognize abnormal well conditions in order to prevent leaks and rig blowouts.
Driller - A driller is a person in charge of the rig floor and of overseeing the drilling of an oil well. They directly control the rate of drilling and it is a skilled position that requires extensive knowledge of rock types and drilling procedures. Drillers must be highly knowledgeable and make real-time decisions in a calm and controlled manner.
Tool Pusher - On a land drilling rig the tool pusher may be the rig manager and responsible for all operations, but on drillships and offshore drilling rigs, tool pushers are in charge of the drilling department and report to the Offshore Installation Manager (OIM).
OIM (Offshore Installation Manager) - is the most senior manager of an offshore installation. If an emergency were to arise they control the situation and manage the response. He is responsible for all personnel and operations and reports to the Rig Manager who is onshore.
Rig Electrician - They are responsible for ensuring that all electrical systems on the rig are functioning properly. Duties include repairing, maintaining, installing and operating all electrical equipment on the rig. They need to be competent in the use of electricity in hazardous areas and communicate with the rig crew.
Motorman / Rig Mechanic - The primary job function is oil rig equipment maintenance. The motorman checks the rig motors and other mechanical equipment on the rig for proper functioning and takes all necessary steps including lubrication and regular maintenance to render equipment in a working condition.
Barge Engineer - The Barge engineer is in charge of control room operations, including anchor handling, rig stability and supply vessel operations. A barge engineer should have a good knowledge of Coast Guard operations and water safety. Most barge engineers have experience as master merchant in the Navy.
Radio Operator - Efficiently communicating vital information between land bases, rigs, boats and helicopters. Sets up, operates and maintains sensitive equipment to establish verbal, data and encoded interactions regarding emergency situations, weather conditions and important job directives.
Catering Staff - They are responsible for taking care of food preparations and kitchen operations. A chef and a night cook or baker oversee the galley. A camp boss oversees the entire kitchen and catering crew, which is made up of stewards who maintain the living quarters.
HSE Supervisor - Monitor and manage a company"s health, safety and environmental program. HSE Supervisors will attend moring meetings with management to report on HSE statistics and also facilitate seeking safety meetings with all the crew (often on Sundays). The main responsibility is to ensure all work is performed in compliance with HSE standards and to implement HSE initiatives and projects.
The most commonly used rigs in the industry are Jack-ups, used to drill in shallow water, Semi-submersibles used to drill in deep water and land rigs which are moved on trailers and spotted on concrete bases on land, I will also mention fixed platforms which can have drilling facilities on board. The most expensive to run is the semi followed by the jack-up and finally the land rig. This is all down to the size, equipment differences and also the difficulty with logistics to and from the rig. Each rig will have similar drilling equipment on board but some will vary due to the nature of the rig.
These types of rigs come in a variety of sizes depending on the type of well you will be drilling. The rig breaks down into many parts so that it can be transported with trucks and trailers. First, a concrete base will be laid at the location of the well and a pit will also be dug next to the location for the cuttings from the well to be temporarily dumped into. These rigs can be assembled very quickly usually within 3-7 days and can be transported in as little as 12 truckloads.
These rigs are towed into location and then jack their 3 legs down until the legs reach the sea bed. Some larger rigs can have up to 5 legs. The rig will then raise itself out of the water to the deserved height. Jack-ups are good in water depths of up to 400ft (120m) and can be found most commonly in the North Sea because of the seas shallow nature. Once settled the Jack-up rig has a static base in which to drill from. Occasionally rocks has to be placed around the legs to keep the platform from sinking or tilting into the seabed.
Sit on pontoons and float high above the water. The ballast tanks can be adjusted to raise or lower the rig and they can be moved under their own power or towed into place. Once in place the rig will deploy its six anchors and they will be tensioned accordingly to move the rig over the drilling location. Semi-Submersible rigs can be used in water depths from 200ft – 10,000ft (60m – 3000m). The main difference with drilling from a Semi is that the rig is not static and is constantly moving with the swell, therefore the drill pipe moves up and down with the swell. The rig is fitted with heave compensators which keep the drill pipe firmly at the bottom whilst drilling. When the rig moves upwards the heave compensators push down the drill pipe and vice versa.
A drillship is a mobile offshore drilling rig where a mono-hull ship, catamaran, triple-hull ship, or barge is adapted or built for use as a platform. After reaching the well position, the drillship first gets into position with the mooring system or dynamic positioning (DP) system and then begins to drill a well. From the action of wind and waves, the drillship will encounter a heaving motion and sway on all sides, hence, it needs measures such as a drilling string heave compensation device and swing angle reduction device as well as dynamic positioning (DP) to guarantee displacement of drillship within the allowable limits, so as to properly drill a well.
Fixed drilling platforms offer stability but not mobility. Today they’re usually used to tap shallow, long term oil deposits. These platforms are permanently anchored directly to the seabed with the use of a steel structure known as a “jacket”. This rises from the seabed to support a surface deck that is above the ocean. The jacket provides the rig’s sturdy base and holds everything else out of the water, while the drilling modules and crew quarters are located on the surface deck. They can drill to depths of about 1,500 feet below the surface but are expensive to build, so they usually require a large oil discovery to justify their construction.

But China has had a rocky time investing in the United States energy patch. Cnooc, China National Offshore Oil Corporation, tried to make an $18.5 billion offer to buy Unocal Corporation in 2005. The Bush administration did not oppose it, but an array of powerful Democratic and Republican members of Congress strongly objected on national security grounds.
The purchase of a small stake in the Gulf from a Norwegian company is not likely to produce as large a reaction, especially when the Obama administration is trying to strengthen economic ties with the Chinese.
China National Petroleum Corporation held talks in March with Chevron to buy a minority interest in the Big Foot oil field in the Gulf of Mexico, but the Chinese company dropped out of the talks, apparently unhappy with the terms the American company offered.
The Gulf of Mexico accounts for about a quarter of the nation’s oil production, and its deepwater potential makes it the most exciting arena for oil exploration in the United States. Foreign oil companies like BP, Shell, StatoilHydro and the Brazilian company Petrobras have been investing heavily in the area.
Areas in the Middle East and Africa have more oil, but they can be challenging to explore because of political upheaval and because oil-rich countries are reluctant to cede control of their resources.
Amy Myers Jaffe, an energy specialist at Rice University, said it made sense for the Chinese to enter a partnership with a more experienced Western oil company in the Gulf to learn the advanced seismic and drilling technologies required to work in deep waters. She predicted little or no political opposition.
“It’s completely unthreatening,” she said. “There is no reason why any American should be concerned about a Chinese company taking a small stake in the Gulf of Mexico.”

DENVER, Feb 8 (Reuters) - As U.S. oil rises toward $100 a barrel, producers in some high-cost shale basins are buying properties and adding rigs and frack crews in places that fell silent when prices crashed early in the pandemic two years ago.
Benchmark U.S. prices last week topped $93 a barrel, up around 65% in the last 52 weeks and the highest since 2014. U.S. producers are cranking up spending at double-digit rates as fuel demand has soared and fears have waned that OPEC will again punish them by flooding the market with crude that is cheaper to produce.
Some executives say current high prices and relatively low service costs make production economics the best in years. Firms are buying U.S. oil, pipeline and gas processing rivals in a bet that higher prices will more than cover rising costs of labor and equipment.
"Drilling economics today are better than they’ve ever been since the shale revolution started," said Chris Wright, chief executive officer of Liberty Oilfield Services (LBRT.N). Closely held companies, in particular, are accelerating output, he said.
New activity is stirring in secondary oilfields like Colorado"s DJ Basin, Wyoming"s Powder River, Louisiana"s Haynesville and North Dakota"s Bakken shale, which last year lost its spot as the second largest U.S. oil producing region.
Spending budgets among U.S. independent producers are up 13% over a year ago, according to analysts at Cowen. Among secondary fields, the natural gas-rich Haynesville is among the only to fully recover output from the 2020 oil-price crash. Other shale fields, including the second-largest producing oilfield, are adding to holdings and rigs.
"When you look at the oil prices in the Bakken, the prompt price is close to $90 a barrel," said Bob Phillips, chief executive of energy pipeline company Crestwood Equity Partners. "That doesn"t happen very often."
Last week, Crestwood completed a $1.8 billion deal to purchase Oasis Midstream Partners" oil, gas and gas-processing assets in North Dakota and Texas as part of a plan to become a top-three midstream operator in the Bakken, Powder River and Permian shale fields.
Shale dealmaking that leads to more output could accelerate this year, said Andrew Dittmar, who specializes in merger and acquisitions for energy tech firm Enverus.
In Wyoming"s Powder River oilfield, Continental Resources has made several acquisitions since last year, the latest from Chesapeake Energy. That purchase could revive the area"s output, said Crestwood"s Phillips.
Continental is scheduled to release its fourth-quarter results next week and has not yet highlighted its 2022 budget or plan, a spokesperson said.U.S. oil futures are nearing $100 a barrel, and last week traded above $93 a barrel - the highest level since 2014.
Ben Dell, managing partner at energy investor Kimmeridge Management and interim CEO at Colorado"s Civitas Resources, said every basin is enjoying an uplift from higher oil and gas prices.
In the Haynesville shale in East Texas and Louisiana, natural gas production is forecast to hit a record 14.1 billion cubic feet per day this month, according to U.S. government data.
Output gains are happening so fast production forecasts in some areas have proven too low. Data and analysis firm East Daley Capital had estimated Haynesville output would rise 12% this year based on 37 active rigs.
There are 42 now drilling, five more than it expected for the year. "There is further upside to our current forecast," said Rob Wilson, a vice president at East Daley.
Still, outside of Haynesville and the Permian, oilfields lag their peak production. Bakken producer Hess Corp. aims to increase its overall production by 12% to 15% this year, driven by output in the Bakken and Guyana. Chevron plans to boost its Permian shale output 10% and Exxon said it could deliver 25% more oil and gas from its Permian holdings.
In the Bakken, oil output is around 1.2 million barrels per day (bpd), below its 1.52 million bpd late 2019 peak. In the Eagle Ford shale of South Texas, oil is averaging 1.1 million bpd, off the peak 1.7 million bpd in early 2015.
U.S. producers have been adding three rigs per week, but they would need to add 11 rigs per week to hold production at current levels, according to Mizuho analysts.
Ron Ness, head of trade group North Dakota Petroleum Council, said supply chain challenges could limit production gains this year, as could investors demanding higher returns.
"Unless $100 plus oil changes the investment mindset toward growth, I"m not sure we will see 1.5 million barrels per day again" in the Bakken, he said.
Chinese yard Cosco Shipping Heavy Industry has delivered a jack-up rig to compatriot company SinoOcean Offshore Assets Management for operation off the Asian nation.
The delivery is based on a memorandum of understanding reached between SinoOcean and Shandong Marine Group in October last year to charter and manage offshore drilling rigs the latter has ordered at Chinese yards.
The delivered rig SinoOcean Prosperous, formerly known as Energy Engager, is a Super 116E jack-up and was ordered by Shandong Marine’s rig owner Northern Offshore at Cosco’s Dalian yard in 2013.
The ABS-classed rig is 74.09 metres long, 62.8 metres wide and is capable of working in water depths of 106.68 metres and drilling to well depths of 9144 metres. It is equipped to accommodate 120 people.
In May last year, Northern Offshore’s jack-up rig Energy Edge sailed from Chinese yard Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding for operations off Qatar, where it will participate in Qatar Petroleum"s huge North Field Expansion project.
