Double-acting:Double-acting hydraulic pumps are for applications that need precise linear movement in two directions, such as elevators and forklifts.
Pressure:Hydraulic gear pumps and hydraulic vane pumps are suitable for low-pressure applications, and hydraulic piston pumps are suitable for high-pressure applications.
Cost:Gear pumps are the least expensive to purchase and maintain, whereas piston pumps are the most expensive. Vane pumps land somewhere between the other two in cost.
Efficiency:Gear pumps are the least efficient. They typically have 80% efficiency, meaning 10 mechanical horsepower turns into 8 hydraulic horsepower. Vane pumps are more efficient than gear pumps, and piston pumps are the most efficient with up to 95% efficiency.
Automotive industry:In the automotive industry, hydraulic pumps are combined with jacks and engine hoists for lifting vehicles, platforms, heavy loads, and pulling engines.
Process and manufacturing:Heavy-duty hydraulic pumps are used for driving and tapping applications, turning heavy valves, tightening, and expanding applications.
Despite the different pump mechanism types in hydraulic pumps, they are categorized based on size (pressure output) and driving force (manual, air, electric, and fuel-powered). There are several parameters to consider while selecting the right hydraulic pump for an application. The most important parameters are described below:
Source of driving force: Is it to be manually operated (by hand or foot), air from a compressor, electrical power, or a fuel engine as a prime mover? Other factors that may affect the driving force type are whether it will be remotely operated or not, speed of operation, and load requirement.
Speed of operation: If it is a manual hydraulic pump, should it be a single-speed or double-speed? How much volume of fluid per handle stroke? When using a powered hydraulic pump, how much volume per minute? Air, gas, and electric-powered hydraulic pumps are useful for high-volume flows.
Portability: Manual hand hydraulic pumps are usually portable but with lower output, while fuel power has high-output pressure but stationary for remote operations in places without electricity. Electric hydraulic pumps can be both mobile and stationary, as well as air hydraulic pumps. Air hydraulic pumps require compressed air at the operation site.
Operating temperature: The application operating temperature can affect the size of the oil reservoir needed, the type of fluid, and the materials used for the pump components. The oil is the operating fluid but also serves as a cooling liquid in heavy-duty hydraulic pumps.
Operating noise: Consider if the environment has a noise requirement. A hydraulic pump with a fuel engine will generate a higher noise than an electric hydraulic pump of the same size.
Spark-free: Should the hydraulic pump be spark-free due to a possible explosive environment? Remember, most operating fluids are derivatives of petroleum oil, but there are spark-free options.
A hydraulic pump transforms mechanical energy into fluid energy. A relatively low amount of input power can turn into a large amount of output power for lifting heavy loads.
A hydraulic pump works by using mechanical energy to pressurize fluid in a closed system. This pressurized fluid is then used to drive machinery such as excavators, presses, and lifts.
A hydraulic ram pump leverages the energy of falling water to move water to a higher height without the usage of external power. It is made up of a valve, a pressure chamber, and inlet and exit pipes.
A water pump moves water from one area to another, whereas a hydraulic pump"s purpose is to overcome a pressure that is dependent on a load, like a heavy car.
There are typically three types of hydraulic pump constructions found in mobile hydraulic applications. These include gear, piston, and vane; however, there are also clutch pumps, dump pumps, and pumps for refuse vehicles such as dry valve pumps and Muncie Power Products’ Live PakTM.
The hydraulic pump is the component of the hydraulic system that takes mechanical energy and converts it into fluid energy in the form of oil flow. This mechanical energy is taken from what is called the prime mover (a turning force) such as the power take-off or directly from the truck engine.
With each hydraulic pump, the pump will be of either a uni-rotational or bi-rotational design. As its name implies, a uni-rotational pump is designed to operate in one direction of shaft rotation. On the other hand, a bi-rotational pump has the ability to operate in either direction.
For truck-mounted hydraulic systems, the most common design in use is the gear pump. This design is characterized as having fewer moving parts, being easy to service, more tolerant of contamination than other designs and relatively inexpensive. Gear pumps are fixed displacement, also called positive displacement, pumps. This means the same volume of flow is produced with each rotation of the pump’s shaft. Gear pumps are rated in terms of the pump’s maximum pressure rating, cubic inch displacement and maximum input speed limitation.
Generally, gear pumps are used in open center hydraulic systems. Gear pumps trap oil in the areas between the teeth of the pump’s two gears and the body of the pump, transport it around the circumference of the gear cavity and then force it through the outlet port as the gears mesh. Behind the brass alloy thrust plates, or wear plates, a small amount of pressurized oil pushes the plates tightly against the gear ends to improve pump efficiency.
A cylinder block containing pistons that move in and out is housed within a piston pump. It’s the movement of these pistons that draw oil from the supply port and then force it through the outlet. The angle of the swash plate, which the slipper end of the piston rides against, determines the length of the piston’s stroke. While the swash plate remains stationary, the cylinder block, encompassing the pistons, rotates with the pump’s input shaft. The pump displacement is then determined by the total volume of the pump’s cylinders. Fixed and variable displacement designs are both available.
With a fixed displacement piston pump, the swash plate is nonadjustable. Its proportional output flow to input shaft speed is like that of a gear pump and like a gear pump, the fixed displacement piston pump is used within open center hydraulic systems.
As previously mentioned, piston pumps are also used within applications like snow and ice control where it may be desirable to vary system flow without varying engine speed. This is where the variable displacement piston pump comes into play – when the hydraulic flow requirements will vary based on operating conditions. Unlike the fixed displacement design, the swash plate is not fixed and its angle can be adjusted by a pressure signal from the directional valve via a compensator.
Vane pumps were, at one time, commonly used on utility vehicles such as aerial buckets and ladders. Today, the vane pump is not commonly found on these mobile (truck-mounted) hydraulic systems as gear pumps are more widely accepted and available.
Within a vane pump, as the input shaft rotates it causes oil to be picked up between the vanes of the pump which is then transported to the pump’s outlet side. This is similar to how gear pumps work, but there is one set of vanes – versus a pair of gears – on a rotating cartridge in the pump housing. As the area between the vanes decreases on the outlet side and increases on the inlet side of the pump, oil is drawn in through the supply port and expelled through the outlet as the vane cartridge rotates due to the change in area.

A clutch pump is a small displacement gear pump equipped with a belt-driven, electromagnetic clutch, much like that found on a car’s air conditioner compressor. It is engaged when the operator turns on a switch inside the truck cab. Clutch pumps are frequently used where a transmission power take-off aperture is not provided or is not easily accessible. Common applications include aerial bucket trucks, wreckers and hay spikes. As a general rule clutch pumps cannot be used where pump output flows are in excess of 15 GPM as the engine drive belt is subject to slipping under higher loads.
What separates this pump from the traditional gear pump is its built-in pressure relief assembly and an integral three-position, three-way directional control valve. The dump pump is unsuited for continuous-duty applications because of its narrow, internal paths and the subsequent likelihood of excessive heat generation.
Dump pumps are often direct mounted to the power take-off; however, it is vital that the direct-coupled pumps be rigidly supported with an installer-supplied bracket to the transmission case with the pump’s weight at 70 lbs. With a dump pump, either a two- or three-line installation must be selected (two-line and three-line refer to the number of hoses used to plumb the pump); however, a dump pump can easily be converted from a two- to three-line installation. This is accomplished by inserting an inexpensive sleeve into the pump’s inlet port and uncapping the return port.
Many dump bodies can function adequately with a two-line installation if not left operating too long in neutral. When left operating in neutral for too long however, the most common dump pump failure occurs due to high temperatures. To prevent this failure, a three-line installation can be selected – which also provides additional benefits.
Pumps for refuse equipment include both dry valve and Live Pak pumps. Both conserve fuel while in the OFF mode, but have the ability to provide full flow when work is required. While both have designs based on that of standard gear pumps, the dry valve and Like Pak pumps incorporate additional, special valving.
Primarily used on refuse equipment, dry valve pumps are large displacement, front crankshaft-driven pumps. The dry valve pump encompasses a plunger-type valve in the pump inlet port. This special plunger-type valve restricts flow in the OFF mode and allows full flow in the ON mode. As a result, the horsepower draw is lowered, which saves fuel when the hydraulic system is not in use.
In the closed position, the dry valve allows just enough oil to pass through to maintain lubrication of the pump. This oil is then returned to the reservoir through a bleed valve and small return line. A bleed valve that is fully functioning is critical to the life of this type of pump, as pump failure induced by cavitation will result if the bleed valve becomes clogged by contaminates. It’s important to note that with the dry valve, wear plates and shaft seals differ from standard gear pumps. Trying to fit a standard gear pump to a dry valve likely will result in premature pump failure.

Live Pak pumps are also primarily used on refuse equipment and are engine crankshaft driven; however, the inlet on a Live Pak pump is not outfitted with a shut-off valve. With a Live Pak pump, the outlet incorporates a flow limiting valve. This is called a Live Pak valve. The valve acts as an unloading valve in OFF mode and a flow limiting valve in the ON mode. As a result, the hydraulic system speed is limited to keep within safe operating parameters.

The prime mover supplies the mechanical power to drive the hydraulic system. In the mobile hydraulics industry the prime mover we are most familiar with is the truck engine. The truck engine is frequently used to provide power through a Power Take-Off, through belts from the crankshaft pulley, or directly through a tubular driveshaft assembly. On some high horsepower systems an auxiliary, or “pony” engine might be used. In any case, the prime mover must be capable of providing the horsepower necessary to power the hydraulic system.
Double, or Triple Gear, power take-offs, found on dump trucks, refuse vehicles, wreckers, aerial bucket trucks, tank trucks, and truck mounted cranes, are the most widely used type of PTO because of their versatility. This type of PTO can be engaged by cable, air, electric solenoid, or mechanical levers and a wide variety of output shafts and mounting flanges allow for direct coupling of hydraulic pumps from major manufacturers. PTO output shaft speeds can be changed by changing the internal gear ratio of the PTO.
We will not attempt to go into PTO selection in this text. Suffice to say that when a power take-off is utilized as the source of power for the hydraulic system, it must meet the torque, horsepower, and speed requirements of the system.
Many refuse and snow control vehicles utilize a front-mounted hydraulic pump driven by a tubular driveshaft assembly from the harmonic balancer of the engine. This “live power” arrangement has the advantage of providing full engine torque on high-demand applications while eliminating the cost of the power take-off. The disadvantage to this type of installation is in the requirement to raise, or “core”, the radiator to allow passage for the driveshaft; extend the front frame rails; and fabricate a mounting bracket for the pump.
Another important consideration is driveshaft angularity. Not only is it necessary to keep the angle shallow—generally less than 7°—but also to keep the pump input shaft parallel to the engine crankshaft within 1-1/2°. Likewise, the yokes on each end of the shaft must be “in phase”, or aligned with each other. Failure to address any of these requirements will result in driveshaft vibration and damage to the pump.

In most industrial hydraulic systems, the prime mover is an electric motor. The rotary motion of the prime mover creates a flow of fluid from the outlet of the pump.
There are two types of displacement: a fixed displacement pump is a positive displacement design in which the amount of the displacement cannot be varied. At a given input RPM, the pump must deliver flow in an amount equivalent to its fixed displacement, on the other hand, a variable displacement is a type of pump which its displacement can be changed easily.
In general all three design classification are applicable to fixed displacement pumps. However only the vane or piston type can be used for variable displacement.
A gear pump uses the meshing of gears to pump fluid by displacement. They are one of the most common types of pumps for hydraulic fluid power applications.

Although there are several uses for gear pumps and significant variations in gear pump components, their basic design and theory of operation is as follows. Every gear pump includes two (sometimes more) rotating gears whose teeth interlock. The rotation of the drive shaft turns the drive gear, which, due to the intermeshing design, also puts the other gear into motion. Hydraulic gear pumps do not create a strong suction so operate best with a flooded inlet.
Internal gear pumps – This types of pump utilises a “gear inside a gear” design. As the gears rotate in the same direction, the space between them varies in a controlled manner, resulting in displacement of the fluid. Internal gear pumps are noted for their relatively quiet operation and ability to manage thick fluid.
External gear pumps – These pumps have two intermeshed gears arranged side by side, one of which is connected to the drive shaft. Rotating the drive shaft creates motion in the gears and creates a flow path on the outside of each gear. An external gear pump can operate effectively at a variety of speeds and with a range of fluid viscosities. The main advantage is simplicity, size to power ratio, price to power ratio.
What can a hydraulic gear pump do that other pumps cannot? For the most part, hydraulic gear pumps offer precise output control that isn’t possible with centrifugal pumps, for example. Increasing or decreasing the speed of the prime mover will increase or decrease the output flow rate. Hydraulic gear pumps are normally made to only run in one rotation however this can normally be changed if required.
Hydraulic internal gear pumps are often more expensive than centrifugal pumps, whilst Hydraulic external gear pumps tend to be less expensive.. They tend to be noisier as well—which can be a problem in environments where extraneous noises cannot be tolerated—and cannot be used to handle abrasive materials.

It is obvious what we want to achieve with variable speed pumps: to save energy and reduce noise and possibly increase the power density of hydraulics. To explain only how to put the electro-hydraulic package together does not provide enough insight. The total hydraulic system functionality needs to be looked upon in the light of competing technologies.
In industrial applications, hydraulic pumps are usually driven with electric motors so the conversion to variable speed drives is more of an upgrade than a major modification. In mobile systems, hydraulic pumps are most often driven by internal combustion engines. It is more complicated to use variable frequency drives on mobile equipment because the electricity to drive a variable speed motor needs to be supplied by a generator or a fuel cell and then stored in batteries. While converting from the DC supply to AC for the motor is not technically difficult, adding the power supply would likely lead to a complete vehicle redesign. Nevertheless, it is worth looking at the paradigm shift of introducing variable frequency drives to electrically-generated rotary and linear motion.
Hydraulics is only one of several methods of power transfer. The so-called “electro-hydraulic actuator” may be an interesting solution in some special applications, but not a viable general solution in multiple motion applications. There is additional cost for converting electric power into hydraulic pressure and flow. If this conversion occurs for each of multiple actuators, it will not be cost effective. The conversion should be done in a central power unit and the cost spread over the multiple actuators.
The electric drive should not be seen as competition but as a partner, bringing technological progress and making hydraulics more competitive.Electric drives have made great progress in eliminating gear boxes and converting huge forces into linear motion. There are many examples of full-electric presses that were, in the past, the exclusive domain of hydraulics.
There are different types of electric motors on the market including the induction motor, the permanent magnet motor, and the reluctance motor, each of which needs to be well understood by the hydraulic engineer putting the electro-hydraulic pump package together.
In hydraulic linear motion, the asymmetry of a single rod cylinder can be compensated with modern integrated regenerative valves. This needs to be considered to minimize the flow demand from the pump before laying out the electric drive and hydraulic pump package.
The beauty of a three-phase electric grid is the way it generates the rotating field of an electric motor. It only needs the determination of the number of poles in the motor to set the speed. If we insert a frequency inverter and make the speed variable within the lower and upper capabilities of the motor, we only need to choose the motor with the most suitable RPM range to drive our hydraulic pump. Typically the four-pole induction motor or the permanent magnet motor would be the preferred choice.
The motor cooling needs special consideration because it may be required to drive a hydraulic pump at speeds ranging from very low to very high. There are a variety of designs for cooling the electric motor that include heat dissipation through the housing surface, a cooling fan rotating with the motor, a separate cooling fan, and even fluid cooling of the housing. The most common for induction motors is the fan running with motor speed. This solution may be inadequate when running at full torque and low speed and so the cooling needs of the motor will need careful consideration.
There are a variety of hydraulic pumps on the market including gear, vane, and piston pumps. Their speed range under full pressure varies a lot with their frame size. Generally a smaller pump goes to higher maximum speed and creates less noise. The minimum speed depends more on the pumping principle than on the frame size. A hydraulic pump is lubricated by the hydraulic fluid. Most pumps need to rotate for proper lubrication and cannot stand still under pressure.
The marriage of the hydraulic pump and the electric motor starts with the selection of the pump and the desired speed for achieving the flow.The torque to turn the pump and thus the motor size depends only on the chosen pump displacement and the pressure. The required drive power is the torque multiplied by the RPM. Higher RPM results in higher power density of the motor and of the pump.
Motors with variable frequency drives as pump prime movers were introduced into the market with the internal gear pump. Small displacement pumps with low inertia can run with flow and pressure control from the motor. High-precision gear pumps that have a single pumping chamber, require strong bearings to keep the gear position within tight tolerances. The typical vane pump with its two balanced pumping chambers and interchangeable cartridge without bearings offers new opportunities. The cartridge can be integrated in a motor with an extended shaft and allows for an extremely compact package. Vane pumps are also available as double or triple pumps in a common housing and can work as a simple switchable pump combination in order to choose the smallest possible motor for the application.
A variable piston pump needs either to stroke in reverse flow direction to decompress, or alternatively, a pressure-compensated pump is used with a small relief, piloted by the pump controller. A combination of a fixed vane pump with its low losses at low pressure and a variable piston pump with its high efficiency at high pressure is very often the most energy-saving solution.
When putting together the electro-hydraulic package, consisting of drive, motor, and pump, all the inefficiencies get added up, and the target is to minimize. Good results cannot be achieved in a trial-and-error approach. An intelligent software tool is needed that has stored all the individual component efficiencies in relation to their parameters. At first the flow and pressure demand vs. time is entered into the so-called DriveCreater tool. A pump or pump combination is selected. The motor temperature is calculated at the given machine cycle in continuous-operating mode. The chosen motor requires a current, and hence a suitable drive is selected. Different solutions can be compared with regard to their consumed energy. A solution with inverter can be compared against running the motor straight from the grid. How much energy is saved in a specific application depends entirely on the machine cycle.

As a hydraulic instructor and consultant, I have met thousands of people whose job consists, at least in part, of the maintenance and repair of hydraulic systems. The number of hydraulic troubleshooters I have come across, however, I can count on the fingers of one hand.
For the most part, I have encountered a lot of excellent hydraulic parts changers. These are people who have worked on and around hydraulic systems for so long that they know changing a specific part typically corrects a certain problem. They may or may not know exactly why this is, but they know from experience that replacing this part fixes the problem.
If I had to pick a single concept that keeps most parts changers from becoming troubleshooters, it would be the failure to understand the difference between pressure and flow. It is not uncommon to hear the terms used interchangeably, as though they are synonyms. They aren’t. I often hear the complaint that a pump isn’t putting out as much pressure as it should, implying that the pump is supposed to deliver pressure.
A common assumption is that if the pressure is low, the pump must be bad. This is not the case. The pump doesn’t pump pressure. The pump delivers a rate of flow. The single function of the pump is to take fluid from one place and put it somewhere else. Pressure is the result of resistance to flow. In our training classes, we use the simple schematic shown above to explain this concept.
A fixed-displacement pump is the simplest type of hydraulic pump. It is turned by a primary mover, generally an electric drive motor or, in mobile equipment, the same engine that moves the machine. The amount of flow is determined by the displacement and speed of the drive motor. By “displacement,” I mean the amount of fluid delivered for each full rotation of the pump.
On typical industrial systems, the pump is turned at a constant speed and therefore delivers a constant amount of flow. When the pump is started, oil is moved from the reservoir and into the system. The higher the flow rate, the faster the actuator will move.
If you trace the flow from the pump, you reach a “T” in the line. Whenever you follow the flow on a schematic and arrive at a line split, you must track the flow in both directions to determine the path of least resistance. Hydraulic fluid always takes the path of least resistance. I
Also, note the dotted line. In hydraulic schematics, a dotted line usually represents a flow path that is somewhat smaller than that of a solid line, typically a drain line or a pilot line. The one shown in the schematics on the left is a pilot line connected immediately upstream of the valve. Whatever pressure is in the main line will be present in the pilot line.
The line terminates into an open drum. When the pump is turned on, as shown in the schematic on the left, the path of least resistance in this case is to the drum, not through the relief valve. The pressure reading on the gauge is 0 psi.
Clearly, the reason the gauge reads so low is because there is no resistance in the system. However, I have seen many pumps replaced for no other reason than because the pressure in the system was low. Over the years, I have received numerous phone calls that started out, “Well, I have changed the pump, but my pressure is still low. What else should I look for?”
In fact, a pressure problem in a hydraulic system is rarely the pump. It is almost always another bad component in the system. The pump should never be the first component to try but rather your last resort when a pressure problem exists. In the example shown, replacing the pump would deliver exactly the same result.
On many occasions, I have heard remarks such as, “My pump is putting out 1,500 psi.” This illustrates the misconception that pressure originates at the pump.
As you can see, what is being read on the gauge is not how much pressure the pump is putting out but rather the amount of resistance currently being overcome in the system. Without a firm understanding of this concept, becoming a troubleshooter is impossible.
