Guidelines on when to use a SUBMERSIBLE PUMP versus a Vertical Turbine Pump:When shaft elongation problems occur on a deep Vertical Turbine pump setting.

Yes, as of September 20, 2019, National Pump has NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 & NSF/ANSI 372 certification for Vertical and Submersible Turbine Pump assemblies. The deep-set Vertical Turbine Pumps are available in configurations that include either oil-lubricated or fresh water flushed enclosed lineshaft or pre-lubricated open line shaft. The short-set Vertical Turbine Pumps are available in either product lubricated or enclosed linshaft configurations. NPC has certified many optional materials to allow our customers the ability to choose the best materials for their specific application. Whether its standard materials, stainless steel or aluminum bronze, we can meet your needs. Bearings options also include bronze, neoprene, marine or vesconite. Wear rings are available in stainless steel or aluminum bronze. Seal options include mechanical seals in split or single cartridge configurations or expanded PTFE yarn packing. Standard coating is Tnemec N-140 Pota-Pox Plus to provide long-lasting protection of the steel components. The complete pump, from the suction to the discharge, is certified to pump drinking water without imparting chemical contaminants or impurities that can affect our health.

Yes, all pumps that are required to be built to the ISO9001 certification must be manufactured at National Pump’s ISO 9001 certified plant in Glendale, AZ.

National Pump manufactures pumps in a variety of materials to meet our customer’s preference or needs. Bowls and Impellers are available in Cast or Ductile Iron, Cast Steel, Stainless Steel, a variety of Bronzes or Duplex Stainless Steels. Bearing materials are available in Bronze, Marine rubber, and engineered composites.

Every piece of rotating machinery (motor, pump, etc.) has a natural frequency or vibration of operation. As the discharge head of the pump supports the motor, it is the responsibility of the pump manufacturer to design the discharge head to withstand the natural frequencies of the motor through its operating speed range (say 45 – 60 HZ, or 1350 – 1800 rpm). Reed Critical analysis is a calculation that is done that looks at the motor frequency and its effect on the stability of the fabricated head and motor structure. Design adjustments are made to the fabricated head to insure vibration free service. (See story on Tacoma Narrows Bridge failure in 1940)

When using a cast iron discharge head, National Pump Company can only guarantee vibration free operation at full load speed. A cast iron discharge head may be acceptable for operating at reduced speeds if precautions are made by locking-out the operating speed(s) on the VFD IF vibration is experienced from the natural resonant frequency of the motor and discharge head structure. In some cases, modifications can be made to the discharge head to change the resonate frequency of the structure.

Normally catalog performance and efficiencies are ‘best obtainable’ performance derived from testing using standard materials of construction (i.e. Cast Iron Enameled lined bowls & Bronze impellers) with backfilled and highly polished impellers. Any material change or use of a ‘standard’ polish, may reduce pump performance. The Hydraulic Institute sets performance standards and test tolerances for what a manufacturer can or cannot provide. These standards range from – 9% to +16% deviation on Flow, – 7% to +10% on Head, -7% to 0% on efficiency. When specifying a pump, it is important to define early on what your expectations are so that the manufacturer can meet those expectations. Call a National Pump Representative to learn more about the Hydraulic Institute Test Tolerances.

NPSHR is the minimum pressure required at the first impeller of the pump to keep the pump from cavitating (i.e. turning water to water vapor in the pump). This differs from NPSHA (available) which is the absolute pressure at the pump suction. Both values are represented in ‘feet’ of pressure. NPSHA must be a minimum of 3 feet more than NPSHR.

Last fall, a power plant needed to replace the vertical pump shaft bearings on their cooling water intake pump. They contacted Boulden to find a solution.

The cooling water intake pumps at the plant pump brackish water from the local harbor. The salty water creates corrosion issues, the silt in the water creates abrasion issues. The line shaft bearings are exposed to potentially high loads from the pump at an operating speed of 1500 rpm.

Boulden supplied the B-1050 bearings mounted in Duplex Stainless shells. The old bearing spiders were corroded and needed to be re-machined; therefore, the shells were machined to fit after the modification to the spiders. The bearings ran against a 7″ (180 mm) diameter shaft. One line shaft bearing design was 9″ (225 mm) long; the other was 11″ (270 mm) long. The components were manufactured in a few weeks, delivered and installed without issues.

If you are looking for better materials for your vertical shaft bearings, contact Boulden. Consider B-1050 for your cooling water pumps, waste water pumps or other services where you need the ability for the bearings to run in potentially dirty service plus survive off design conditions such as running dry. We have a portfolio of materials with B-Series and Vespel® CR-6100, so whatever your vertical shaft bearing application, we can help.

Lovejoy Hydraulics Pump / Motor Mounts help power unit designers and fabricators simplify their Power Unit designs. The Pump / Motor Mount, commonly called the “Bell Housing”, allows direct mounting of flange mount pumps to NEMA “C-Face electric motors. This eliminates the need for coupling guards, foot brackets, shims, risers, and motor mounting plates, and assures accurate shaft alignment.

The ease of assembly reduces power unit fabrication costs. Lovejoy precision machines each cast aluminum alloy pump/motor mounts to 0.003 inch concentric from the motor pilot to the pump pilot, and the mounting faces parallel to each other and perpendicular to the pilot Centerline within 0.002 inch. This assures accurate shaft alignment, which prolongs bearing, seal and coupling life. This also helps to reduce noise and vibration in the power unit.

Lovejoy Hydraulics Cast Aluminum Pump / Motor Mounts are cast from a lightweight, high strength aluminum alloy. For safety, a molded OSHA orange coupling access cover is included for mounts larger than the 56C motor frame size.

Vertical immersion pumps are essentially vertically immersed centrifugal pumps where the motor is separated from the pump by a long shaft. For this reason, they are commonly referred to as vertical shaft pumps or vertical column pumps. Whereas with a submersible pump the whole assembly is immersed into the fluid, with a vertical cantilever pump the electric motor is located above the fluid and is connected via the vertical shaft to the pump impellers which are immersed into the fluid. Vertically immersed shaft pumps are the ideal solution when needing to pump from a sump, underground well, a reservoir or tank, which is why they are also known as sump pumps. Their ability to handle high temperature and flammable liquids make column pumps a popular solution when a traditional submersible pump cannot be used.

Vertically immersed pumps can cover a wide range of flow rates and heads making it a versatile type of transfer pump, and used when the flow rate exceeds the capabilities of a jet pump. Another benefit of the centrifugal vertical column pump is that its construction is space saving.

Vertical immersion pumps, also referred to as vertical shaft pumps or column pumps, are a pumping technology with an elongated shaft encased in a column to separate the motor from the pump. Whilst the pump impellers are immersed in the fluid inside the casing, the long vertical shaft allows the motor to stay outside the fluid. Vertical column pumps differ to a submersible pump as with those the whole assembly is immersed.

Cantilever pumps are a similar looking design with similar uses but differ in that they have an extended motor shaft and are therefore limited in length to around 1.5m to 2m as beyond this length the radial force becomes too great. Vertical immersion pumps on the other hand have a separate working shaft to the motor, meaning they can be manufactured to considerably longer lengths for deeper sumps and containers. It also means that this type of column pump does not rely on a single bearing to take it’s load, adding strength and increasing life span.

The design of the vertical line shaft pump gives is several distinct uses over other pump types and the regularly compares submersible pump. Ideal for deep tanks, sump and well emptying –As the pump head is within the fluid, vertically immersed pumps maintain a flooded suction. They are therefore ideal for applications where typically a self-priming pump is required, such as the emptying of tanks, reservoirs, sumps and wells require. This is why they are widely referred to as vertical sump pumps. The length of the vertical shaft pump will be determined by the depth of the container in question. Can handle high temperature fluids – High temperature fluids are often responsible for the degrading of pump seals, which is why submersible pumps are not usually suitable. However, vertical column pumps’ seals are situated outside of the fluid meaning that this is not a problem. Secondly , when liquids are being pumping close to boiling point, there is a risk of cavitation caused by the NPSH available. However, due this design’s flooded suction, NPSH is not a concern.Compact, space saving design –In installations where space is an issue, vertical sump pumps are an ideal solution, as rather than take up more space, they simply sit inside the container that needs to be transferred from.Suitable for flammable liquids - Due to their electric motor being directly immersed into the fluid, submersible pumps are no longer deemed safe for use with potentially explosive fluids such as petrol and certain chemicals. Vertical line shaft pumps are an ideal alternative in these instances.Lower maintenance – Vertical immersion pumps are easier to maintain than submersible pumps for two reasons. Firstly, with the whole assembly immersed into the fluid, certain industrial applications require the maintenance of submersible pumps to be carried out in particularly confined, difficult to access locations. Secondly, with their motor installed outside of the fluid, column pumps are less prone to seal and motor failures.Long suction requirements –In applications where the suction distance would be too long if the pump was located outside of the fluid, vertically immersed pumps are an inevitable solution.

This 2-Stage pump fits a wide variety of log splitters and outdoor power equipment and works in both horizontal and vertical orientations. The included inlet nipple requires a 1" inner diameter suction hose.

Rated for up to 3,000 PSI at 3,600 RPM, this pump can power log splitters from 5 to 35 tons, depending on the inner diameter of the hydraulic cylinder. It features a fast cycle time by moving quickly when unloaded. It automatically shifts to low-flow/high-pressure mode at 500 PSI.

Be sure to use AW-32 10-Weight (ISO 32) or AW-46 20-Weight (ISO 46) light hydraulic fluid or Dexron III automatic transmission fluid. This pump is not designed for use with “universal” or "tractor" transmission oil, such as "303". The use of incorrect fluid may damage the pump and void the warranty.

Make sure the hydraulic fluid reservoir is not below the pump to ensure a sufficient flow of fluid to the pump. Suction-side filtration should be no finer than 150 microns. The use of a 10-25 micron filter on the suction side of the pump is too restrictive and will cause failure.

We recommend using an L-style jaw coupling to connect the pump to an engine. Couplings and mounting brackets are available. You should use at least a 5hp 163cc engine to maintain 3,600 RPM under load.

The pump casing materialis a minimum of class 30 cast iron. The bearing bracket supports are cast integral with the lower casing half for permanent alignment of bearings and all rotating parts. Bronze, renewable casing rings are doweled and shouldered in the casing.

Cast bronze, one-piece impeller is hydraulically and dynamically balanced for vibration-free performance and longer bearing life. The impeller is keyed to the shaft for positive driving. Bronze impeller wear rings are securely fastened to the impeller and machined to close tolerances to permit minimum re-circulation of pumped liquid.

Replaceable bronze or optional hardened 416 stainless steel shaft sleeves protect the carbon steel or optional heat-treated stainless steel shaft through the stuffing box. The shaft sleeves extend beyond the mechanical seal or packing glands for maximum shaft protection. Sleeves are sealed by O-rings. Grease-lubricated ball bearings are designed for an average life of 100,000 hours. Inboard bearings are single row, radial ball bearings. Outboard bearings are duplex angular contact ball bearings. (optional oil lubricated).

The pump and driverare mounted on a common steel base (optional drip rim), coupled by a flexible coupling and furnished with a coupling guard. Pump and driver are aligned and bolted in place prior to factory shipment.
