Mechanical carbon seal has a long history. Graphite is an isoform of element carbon. In 1971, the United States studied the successful flexible graphite sealing material, which solved the leakage of atomic energy valve. After deep processing, the flexible graphite becomes an excellent sealing material, which are made into various carbon mechanical seals with the effect of sealing components. These carbon mechanical seals are used in chemical, petroleum, electric power industries such as high temperature fluid seal.

Carbon Graphite is the ideal seal material in every aspect. It is self-lapping and flexible enough to conform to the mating face, very hard, self-lubricating and resistant to wear. It is also lubricated by almost any fluid, so the media being sealed will add additional lubrication. It is impervious and resistant to most chemicals.

Designing mechanical seals for sealing refrigerants and other low viscosity fluids has been a problem in the industry for many years. It has since been established that mechanical seals with a tread combination of antimony impregnated graphite and silicon carbide are the best solution.

Low viscosity fluids are difficult for mechanical seals because the hydrodynamic film is extremely thin. The sealing surfaces must remain well polished to operate within the specifications. The self-polishing properties of antimony impregnated carbon graphite material and the high dimensional stability of both silicon carbide and antimony impregnated carbon graphite ensure that the seal can function within the specifications.
