24 DrawworksDrilling equipmentWirth multi/two-gear drawworks –braking systemsThe drawworks in our standardconfiguration includesindependent braking systems.two independent disc brake systems to achieve maximumsafety. In the event of a reduction or loss of braking forceof the master brake, the second brake system will engageaccordingly to compensate for the loss. Thus permitting fulland continual operation of the drawworks until remedial workcan be performed on the master brake.Control of the drawworks disc brake, gear selection andoperation of the auxiliary drives are controlled by theprogrammable logic controller (PLC) within the drawworksinterface control system (DICS). Braking requirements aredetermined by the ZPS programmable logic controller whichobtains information from the drawworks sensors, the “DCS”and the “VFD”.Primary active braking system:The drawworks main drive motors, supplied by Aker Solutions, not only have a driving function but are also used forregenerative braking. For braking, the drawworks motors willoperate in generator mode and feedback the braking energyinto a resistor bank or to the mains until the load is stopped.Regenerative braking can preferably manage braking atlow speed or no speed conditions, and can stop the load atpredetermined positions.Secondary active braking system:The second braking system is an Eddy current brake, whichis a dynamic electromagnetic braking devicee. This brake isa high energy absorption device thus maintaining appropriatebraking torque at higher drawworks speeds. Under lowspeedor nospeed conditions the eddy current brake can onlyproduce low or no braking torque. Under these conditionsthe regenerative brake takes on most of the load. The eddycurrent braking energy is dis- sipated by water cooling.Emergency and parking brake system:The disc brake represents the third braking system and isused for emergency braking and parking only. The disc brakeand the associated callipers are kept open by a hydraulicsystem thereby providing a fail-safe mechanism. In case of anemergency such as loss of power, hydraulic failure or systemfailures of the drives, all callipers will be applied.Under normal operation conditions the callipers are onlyapplied for parking, holding the load in a static condition andthus preventing its uninten- tional lowering or raising.Wirth offhore multi and two gear drawworks are equippedwith the Wirth Dual Brake System (DBS) which is anintelligent redundant PLC controlled system incorporatingThe ZPS PLC algorithm calculates the degree of brakingrequired and transmits the relevant signals to the brakingsystems (“VFD” and “ECB”). The main regenerative brakingsystem is the primary braking system. It is supplemented bythe eddy current brake if necessary. The third braking systemoperates in combination with the primary and secondarybraking systems.
25 DrawworksDrilling equipmentWirth single gear drawworks –braking systemsThe drawworks in our standardconfiguration includesindependent braking systems.Under normal operation conditions the callipers are onlyapplied for parking, holding the load in a static condition andthus preventing its uninten- tional lowering or raising. All offhore Wirth single gear drawworks for mid- anddeepwater application are equipped with two redundantPLC controlled disk brakes to achieve maximum safety. In the event of a reduction or loss of braking force of themaster brake, the second brake will engage accordingly tocompensate for the loss. Thus permitting full and continualoperation of the drawworks until remedial work can beperformed on the master brake.Control of the drawworks disc brakes and operation of theauxiliary drives are controlled by the programmable logiccontroller (PLC) within the drawworks interface controlsystem (DICS). Braking requirements are determined by theZPS programmable logic controller which obtains informationfrom the drawworks sensors, the “DCS” and the “VFD”.The ZPS PLC algorithm calculates the degree of brakingrequired and transmits the relevant signals to the brakingsystems (“VFD”). The main regenerative braking system isthe primary braking system. The second braking systemoperates in combination with the primary braking systems.Primary active braking system:The drawworks main drive motors, supplied by AkerSolutions, not only have a driving function but are alsoused for regenerative braking. For braking, the drawworksmotors will operate in generator mode and feed-back thebraking energy into a resistor bank or to the mains until theload is stopped. Re generative braking can stop the load atpredetermined positions.Emergency and parking brake system:The disc brake represents the second braking system and isused for emergency braking and parking only. The disc brakeand the associated callipers are kept open by a hydraulicsystem thereby providing a fail-safe mechanism.
