If there are fewer acorns, it may result in a decrease in populations of squirrels and field mice. Since these animals are often hosts to insects, including ticks, the ticks will be on the move and more likely to bite humans. As a result, scientists expect to see an increase in the number of cases of Lyme Disease, an infection carried by ticks.

Q. No one knows exactly what causes tornados, but some scientists believe that when warm air meets cold air, a tornado may form. The reason for this is that the warm air is lighter than the cold air, so it rises up fast and meets different winds moving different directions. Under the right conditions, this can cause a tornado. Though there is still much mystery surrounding tornados, many people believe that when warm moist air meets cool dry air, tornados can result.

Dr. Knapp doesn’t want people to sit back and let the toad vanish. He believes that everyone is responsible for restoring the toad species. One of Dr. Knapp"s solution is that we stop mowing parts of our lawns and let the grass grow wild to reserve space for the toad. He also believes we need to stop using pesticides and fertilizers. The chemicals kill the insects that toads eat. If we preserve some spaces in our lawns and stop using fertilizers, Dr. Knapp believes we can save the toads.
Q. A fuel cell is a kind of battery. It makes electricity. One side of the cell is filled with hydrogen. The other is filled with oxygen that comes from the air. Have you ever wondered where rain comes from? What makes water fall from the sky? In fact, water is always present in the air. This kind of water is called water vapor. It is so small, smaller than a grain of flour, that the human eye cannot see it. Warm air can hold a lot of water. When the warm air rises, the air and water vapor start to cool. When this happens, clouds are formed. That is what clouds are made of, lots of tiny water droplets. The droplets sometimes get bigger inside the cloud. Sometimes they run into each other to make larger groups. Once these drops get too big and heavy, gravity from the Earth pulls them down, and it rains!

Army troops, however, are better trained to fight on land.

This will help us protect our wildlife and enjoy the natural beauty around us.

Long ago, people made maps as they walked. They drew each tiny bend along the path. Now, pictures from space satellites give a clear view of the land and water. Infrared maps from satellites use color to show hills and valleys on Mars. Maps show us where we have been and how far we have come.

Q. The ice-cream shop around the corner from my house has the best ice-cream in the city. When you first walk inside, there is a long chrome counter with matching stools extending to alongside the far wall. Right where the counter stops, the booth seating begins. There are lots of old-timey knickknacks on the walls and chrome napkin holders on all the tables. My favorite part of the shop is behind the counter glass, where they keep all of the ice-cream flavors. A rainbow of delicious sugary flavors is kept cool and delicious behind the counter glass.
Q. No one knows the true origin of ice-cream, but the first published ice-cream recipe appears in “Mrs. Mary Eales"s Receipts,” a cook book that was printed in London in 1718. Then, sometime around 1832, an African American confectioner named Augustus Jackson created multiple ice cream recipes and invented a superior technique to manufacture ice cream. Next, ice cream soda was invented around 1874, but, finally, the real breakthrough may have been at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, Missouri, when the American ice-cream cone was unveiled!
Q. When it comes to making ice-cream, you can do it the traditional way, by stirring it in a frozen container, or you can use liquid nitrogen to freeze your mixture. There are some advantages to using liquid nitrogen. Since liquid nitrogen freezes the mixture faster, the crystal grains are smaller, giving the ice-cream a creamier texture. The downside is that ice-crystals grow faster in ice-cream prepared using liquid nitrogen, so it must be stored at much colder temperatures. Both methods produce a distinct texture, and both are delicious.
Q. Freezer burn may have wasted more ice-cream than sidewalks. If you don’t know, freezer burn is when ice crystals form on the surface of ice-cream. These ice crystals can ruin the texture and flavor of the ice cream. But you can prevent freezer burn. Since freezer burn is caused when melted ice-cream is refrozen, rather than eating your ice-cream fro
