You need to pour water into the system before this pump will begin suction. There is a valve in the intake hole in this pump. What it does is, it prevents water that has reached the pump from flowing back into the source when you turn it off.

The first thing my plumber did was remove this and instead installed a plastic foot valve at the end of the pipe that sucks the water. So now, the water remains in this pipe as well. As long as we keep the water in there, we don"t have to pour water every time we run the pump.
