A horizontal centrifugal pump will have its shaft placed horizontally, typically between the bearings or overhung. Meanwhile, a vertical centrifugal pump has a shaft that is oriented vertically. The design of the shaft is radial split and overhang.
The basic principle of operation of a horizontal centrifugal pump is based on a fluid being pumped continuously from a suction nozzle, located in the centre of the impeller. In a radial direction, it flows to the edge of the impeller. Once drained, the flow moves to the casing. The first step in the work of a centrifugal pump is to provide mechanical power to its impeller through an electric motor. The impeller, which is connected to the electric motor by the shaft, starts to rotate. Due to the rotation of the impeller, a vacuum is created in the impeller eye, so the liquid under the suction pipe begins to enter the impeller eye axially. After entering the impeller eye, the liquid hits the blades of the impeller. The high speed of the impeller uses centrifugal force to rotate the liquid radially outward. The impeller continues to rotate until the liquid passes through each part of the impeller, and the rotation accelerates the fluid, which increases the energy of the fluid and creates a liquid head. The blades of the impeller convert the kinetic energy of the liquid into velocity, which ultimately increases the velocity of the liquid.
