A mud pump is a reciprocating piston or plunger device designed to pump drilling fluid under high pressures and volumes down the drill string of a drilling rig. The main functions of drilling fluid are to provide hydrostatic pressure to prevent formation fluids from entering and to stabilize the bore, to keep the drill bit cool and clean, to carry drill cuttings back out to the surface, and to suspend the drill cuttings while drilling is paused or during the pullback process.

Tulsa Rig Iron (TRI), designer and manufacturer of mud pumps, mud recycling systems and more, recently welcomed U.S. Rep. Kevin Hern (R-Okla.) to its manufacturing facility in Kiefer, Oklahoma, for an “I Make America” event.

Hern, a member of the powerful Ways and Means Committee in Washington, D.C., toured Tulsa Rig Iron’s state-of-the-art manufacturing facility before addressing those in attendance.

“My whole advocacy is making sure I can do everything that I possibly can as a member of congress to get government out of the way and put Americans to work,” said Hern as he addressed members of AEM, as well as representatives from TRI’s partners in Tulsa Pipeline Equipment Manufacturers (TPLEM), Midwestern Manufacturing and Darby Equipment Co. “You guys have a tough job,” Hern continued. “I just want to say thank you. It takes folks like you to move America forward.”

Tulsa Rig Iron (TRI) celebrated its 30th anniversary by hosting a luncheon on Sept. 20 at its facility in Kiefer, OK. Terry Flynn, vice president of sales and marketing, said that “with so many acquisitions and mergers in our industry, it is a great benchmark that a company checks the 30 year box.”

The company was founded in September 1987 by J.D. Young, and was originally a full-line manufacturer/supplier to the horizontal directional drilling industry. After J.D.’s sudden passing in 2004, sons Trevor and Troy Young took the company helm and started the process of consolidating product lines and streamlining manufacturing processes.

“We now focus on manufacturing world-class mud pumps, mud recycling systems and hydrostatic test pump packages,” Flynn explained. “Our state-of-the-art manufacturing facility is located on 40 acres just southwest of Tulsa.”

“What a difference 30 years makes,” said Troy Young, vice president. “Tulsa Rig Iron comes from very humble beginnings and lots of hard work. I was a 14-year old boy 30 years ago, but remember it like it was yesterday. Many thanks to J.D. for building the foundation our company stands on today.

The Kiefer, Oklahoma-based manufacturer of horizontal directional drilling (HDD) mud cleaning systems and triplex mud pumps announced the passing in a June 20 post on its Facebook page and in a subsequent press release.

Troy Young, along with his brother Trevor Young, was heavily involved in the family business beginning at an early age. In the early 1970s, their father JD Young owned and operated Triangle Supplies in Lafayette, Louisiana, which supplied pumps to the offshore oil and gas market. In the early 1980s, a second Triangle facility was opened in Tulsa.

JD was instrumental in the early development of HDD equipment technology. When the HDD process started gaining traction in 1987, the company relocated to Kiefer, Oklahoma, just outside of Tulsa. Many early emerging HDD contractors were located in Tulsa, so relocating the company headquarters was a great move.

Originally consisting of several divisions, Tulsa Rig Iron provided many products and services to the HDD market. The core divisions at that time were Hydro-Power Systems, Tulsa Trenchless and Tulsa Triplex. The company’s early products and services were packaged drilling mud recycling systems, triplex mud pumps, and mini- thru maxi-sized HDD rigs. The early 1990s through the early 2000s saw Tulsa Rig Iron as a major player in the HDD product market.

In 2004, JD Young passed away unexpectedly. Sons Trevor and Troy stepped up at that time as president and vice president, respectively. After a complete business analysis, the decision was made to shutter the outlying divisions and focus their vision solely on designing and manufacturing world-class mud cleaning systems and triplex mud pumps.

Tulsa Rig Iron is a good place to work. The people are warm and friendly. The pay is on the lower end and the insurance is expensive. The management are easy to work for and are laid back.

A typical day at work was generally great but filled with challenges. I learned a lot but not due to management or supervision. My experience was to be thrown in the deep in and either sink or swim, fortunately I work great under pressure and am a fast learner or I might not have lasted. Management was 95% not involved with anything involving office staff. Their only concern was production and getting units out of the door. They were more concerned with personality issues than job performance. When I first started there were no rules or SOPs to follow, everybody did what they wanted to. One day they would handle a situation one way and the next it would be totally different. I set up my own procedures for my responsibilities so that there was no question about how to handle a situation. My co-workers of Tulsa Rig Iron, Inc. were wonderful to work with but when it came to Tulsa Triplex, Inc. the employees were always causing conflict and problems. They would rather tattle tale than try to resolve any issues, just trying to get people in trouble. It was like working with children all day long. I really do miss Tulsa Rig Iron, Inc. employees. The hardest part of the job was working with Tulsa Triplex, Inc. employees. The most enjoyable part of the job was working with Tulsa Rig Iron, Inc. employees and the personal reward of knowing that what I did for the company made those employees jobs easier.
