A mud pump is a reciprocating piston or plunger device designed to pump drilling fluid under high pressures and volumes down the drill string of a drilling rig. The main functions of drilling fluid are to provide hydrostatic pressure to prevent formation fluids from entering and to stabilize the bore, to keep the drill bit cool and clean, to carry drill cuttings back out to the surface, and to suspend the drill cuttings while drilling is paused or during the pullback process.

Mud pumps consist of two main sub-assemblies- the fluid end and the power end. The fluid end performs the pumping process with valves, pistons, and liners, or plungers and stuffing boxes- depending upon the type used. These components are considered expendables, and are designed to be easily replaced in the field. The power end contains the eccentric or crankshaft, along with the connecting rods, and cross heads/slides.

Tulsa Triplex is a Tulsa Rig Iron company. We manufacture pumps from 100 to 600 horsepower that are designed to be easily maintained and are capable of being completely rebuilt. Our pumps feature a smaller footprint and lighter weight than competing models, making them completely legal load size and weight in most instances. They are available as a bare pump, with chainbox, or a complete skidded package.

Founded in 1987 by J.D. Young, Tulsa Rig Iron was the premier designer and manufacturer of horizontal directional drilling rigs, along with mud pumps and mud recycling systems. In 2004, sons Trevor and Troy took the company helm and made the decision to concentrate the company efforts on building the best mud pumps and recycling systems available. Since that time, Tulsa Rig Iron has continued to set the industry standards for mud pump and recycling systems and is the manufacturer of choice for contractors around the globe. Fourth quarter 2013 marks a significant company milestone, in that we will effectively double our manufacturing capacity with a huge facility expansion. This will allow us to get equipment to our customers in a more timely fashion. Our state of the art manufacturing facility is located on 40 acres in Kiefer Oklahoma, a suburb just outside of Tulsa.

Tulsa Rig Iron is dedicated to being the industry leading provider of products and solutions for energy contractors. We will always have the best interest of our customers, our employees, and the environment in mind while designing and delivering our products and services.

Tulsa Rig Iron has added to its product line a hydrostatic test pump package designed specifically to fill and pressure up new and repaired pipelines for integrity testing before they are put into service.

“This system is ideal for multi-mile infield gathering systems up to 16-inches in diameter, as well as shorter run/larger diameter pipelines,” said Terry Flynn, business development manager. “Designed to be user friendly, rig up time can be done in less than 30 minutes with a minimal crew. “

The testing procedure is to cap the line, pump in water until full and then pressurize it to a specified psi. If there are no leaks, the pressure will hold. When integrity is confirmed, the pipeline is approved for service.

The HPP-150 hydrostatic test pump package includes a 900 gpm fill pump, a Tulsa Rig Iron TT series triplex pump rated to 4,775 psi and is powered by a 175-horsepower diesel power unit through the company’s exclusive single input/dual output chainbox drive which eliminates the problem of belt slippage under load.

“This combination design allows for simple transition from the fill pump to pressure pump, and our five speed transmission allows pressures to be built in a controlled manner versus equipment with a PTO drive,” Flynn explained.

“The need to test a new or repaired segment of pipe is obvious,” said Flynn. “Pipe must be tested before it’s put in service, and it needs to be done in a manner that’s economical and safe for the environment.”

“Very few companies manufacture this type of pump package,” he added. “We are recognized in the industry for our mud pumps and mud cleaning systems, so a hydrostatic test pump package fits well into our product line. Manufacturing the majority of the components in the HPP-150 enables us to better control the quality of the finished product.”

Established in 1987, Tulsa Rig Iron specializes in mud mixing and recycling equipment for the energy and horizontal directional drilling industries. Today’s product line includes mud mixing and recycling systems rated from 50 to 1,500 gpm, and mud pumps rated from 5 to 880 gpm.

“The fourth quarter of 2013 marked a significant company milestone,” Flynn concluded. “The expansion of our state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities effectively doubled capacity to produce Tulsa Rig Iron products.”
