Manufacturer Vermeer has released the D220x500 S3 Navigator horizontal directional drill, building on the company’s success with its D220x300 S3 Navigator.

“The new D220x500 S3 integrates many of the quality features found on the Vermeer D220x300 S3 HDD, but with even more versatility and ramped-up performance,” says Tod Michael, product manager of trenchless products for Vermeer. “This drill is designed to meet the needs of utility contractors performing large-diameter city work, as well as pipeliners that are performing long, large-diameter bores.”

The D220x500 S3 delivers up to 54,000 foot-pounds (39,828.2 Nm) of torque at a spindle speed of 36 revolutions per minute, 240,400 pounds (1069.4 kN) of thrust/pullback, and fluid flow rates of up to 350 gpm (1324.9 L/min) if the onboard pump is selected. The D220x500 S3 is available with an onboard cab or standalone operator cab, and with a 20- to 30-foot (6.1- to 9.1-meter) rod rack. Contractors can also choose between a rod stager or full-length catwalk, as well as add an optional mud pump, crane or hydraulic scissor lift for optimum staging efficiency.

For more mobile operations, the D220x500 S3 can be equipped with an on-board excavator-style cab that has a view of the open-top vises, as well as the rack and rod stager. Both the on-board and detached cab include the same dual-multifunction joystick controls found on all Vermeer S3 horizontal directional drills.

Vermeer built the D220x500 S3 with a 415-horsepower (310-kW) Cat C13 ACERT Tier-4 Final engine that it calls convenient to service. The drill also runs quietly at just 81.2 dB(A).

Mud pumps are a vital part of pipeline drilling projects. But with mud pumps, you have a decision to make: Should you use an onboard or a stand-alone mud pump? Both can get the job done well, but what’s the best option for your operation? To answer those questions, we have to look at three different factors: productivity, transportation and space.

First, you have to consider your productivity goals. To maximise the capacity and productivity of your pipeline directional drills, you need a consistent flow of drilling fluid that a mud pump can provide. However, there is a difference in size between onboard mud pumps and stand-alone ones.

For example, on the Vermeer D220x300 S3 Navigator® horizontal directional drill the maximum drilling fluid flow is 345 gal./min (1306 l/min). An onboard mud pump most likely won’t be able to reach that maximum flow but a stand-alone pump could. At 100% efficiency, the Vermeer SA400 Tier 4i (Stage IIIB) high-pressure mud pump has a maximum flow of 550 gal./min (2082 l/min), which would allow you to maximise the fluid flow on your drill.

If you lower your fluid flow, you are slowing your downhole speed and your thrust/pullback speed. You can get by with a smaller onboard mud pump, but you will have to take things slower and be patient as you drill.

“The higher the flow, the higher the productivity,” said Tod Michael, a Vermeer product manager for trenchless products. “If you are drilling a smaller diameter bore, a small onboard pump could handle the job. But if you need to increase your fluid, have a higher gal/min flow downhole or are drilling a 24 in. (60.9 cm) diameter or larger, a stand-alone mud pump is a good option.”

A stand-alone mud pump means there is more equipment to haul to the jobsite. Often, this requires an additional truck to transport it, since you also have to haul your drill, reclaimer and drilling fluid too. Another truck means extra costs and is something to be aware of beforehand.

One last thing to consider before you make a decision between onboard or stand-alone mud pumps is the space on the jobsite. Think about the typical amount of room you have for equipment. Will you have space for a stand-alone mud pump each time?

“Your jobsite space may vary from site to site, but ensuring that you will have room for a mud pump is an important factor to remember as you plan the project,” said Michael. “Usually, if contractors have the space, they will opt to have a stand-alone mud pump onsite.”

This mud pump will deliver the consistent flow of drilling fluid that is vital to HDD pipeline drilling projects. Suction inlet valve suspends charged flow during drill rod makeup and breakout process, keeping excess drilling fluid from escaping as drill pipes separate. Vermeer, Jon Kuyers, global underground product manager: We define common controls as having the same basic control system grouped by function. The only caveat would be that with the smaller models that do not have rod loading systems, those controls will not be included. On some of the larger drills, the keypads may also have different functionality based on a different features like a crane or rod stager which the smaller drills would not have. The D36x50DR Rock drill has a slightly different joystick switch for the makeup and breakout of the dual rod system’s third vise; otherwise it is like our standard D36x50 Series II drill.

Vermeer: Yes, because there is not a significant amount of variation among many of the machine sizes. For instance, a 20,000-pound pullback drill has the same joystick controls as a 60,000-pound pullback drill. While these drills are designed for totally different types of work, an operator can quickly learn how to operate the machine and how the machine reacts and performs in differing types of ground conditions.

Vermeer: There are many benefits. Obviously when operating different sizes of machinery, the learning curve is drastically reduced. The thrust and rotation levers are always consistent – the mud pump, throttle and rod loader controls all are located on the joysticks. This is common throughout the Vermeer drill line.

Vermeer: Common controls were developed in direct relationship with operator ergonomics. We looked at how our machines were operated, collected feedback from operators – what they liked and disliked – and grouped the controls according to the operations that were used the most, then developed the logic that made the operation consistent and easy to operate.

American Augers: Yes. For example, some machines have mud pumps on board and some machines do not. There are also machines that have pipe loaders. Obviously, each machine’s controls accommodate such differences.

Vermeer: Yes, we are very pleased with the implementation of our controls across our product lineup and believe it has helped operators and companies in the industry to expand their operational abilities.
