Effluent, as defined by the EPA, is wastewater that flows out of a treatment plant, sewer, or industrial outfall. Effluent generally refers to treated or untreated liquid waste or sewage discharged into a river or the sea with solids less than 5 cm in size. A good way to think about it is to equate effluent with gray water and waste with higher amounts of large solids as sewage. Many different industries have the need to remove effluent from the processing center or factory. Most of them utilize some sort of pumping system to move the fluid from sumps and pits into pipelines that feed the material to a treatment plant or discharges the liquid into the surrounding environment if deemed safe to do so.
The problems faced with pumping effluent is that the material can be corrosive, contain solids, and can vary in viscosity, sometimes a combination of all three. All of these factors can lead to significant problems with clogging and wear and tear for pumps and related equipment. In response, effluent pump operators look for long lasting pumps that can withstand pumping abrasive solids without clogging or quickly wearing down. With pump maintenance being one of the most costly factors over the life of the pump, minimizing maintenance problem is paramount. The feeding rate is kept constant and the solids with the size of 2 µm and above gets deposited on drum inner wall in the form of stable sludge with 20% water content and the hydraulic energy in the drum allows a collecting pipe to collect clean water and transport it to collecting tank without any pump.
