Learn a new weave structure, enjoy the convenience of having everything you need for a project ready to go on the loom and stretch your weaving budget without having to buy more yarn than you need. I like to call it "instant gratification" weaving.
For over twenty-five years I have been discovering the magic of weaving. In 2004, I completed and passed, the Handweavers Guild of America Certificate of Excellence, Level 1 in Handweaving. In 2010, I created dje handwovens, designing textiles for kits for handweavers. In 2011, I teamed up with Mountain Colors yarns as their exclusive weaving designer. In 2012, I started offering my kits through retailers across the U.S.
"It"s magic!"This was my reaction as a 9-year-old watching a handweaver for the first time. How else could she create those beautiful designs in the cloth by simply pushing some pedals on the loom and throwing some yarn back and forth.
After teaching as a professor of Design and Weaving at the University of Montana and Cal Poly in California, Joanne decided to open her studio in Montana to weave tapestries and teach classes. She has been teaching weaving throughout the US and Canada since 1972.
Joannes expertise with countermarch and counterbalance looms bring many weavers to her classes. The studio has a variety of new looms, mostly Glimakra Swedish counterbalance and countermarch looms and equipment, including two Swedish drawlooms. The studio is fully equipped with warping reels, shuttles and temples for you to use. Bockens and Borgs Swedish linen, cottolin, cotton and Swedish wool yarns are available.
Using a variety of types of looms, you will learn the basics of weaving. Some looms will be prepared and ready for you to weave. Planning projects and warping the loom can be a part of the class. We will start at the level you are at, as this class is designed to fit your weaving skill level.
Using a countermarch floor loom, you will learn to weave on, warp and tie up a countermarch loom. You will learn why they are such nice looms. The class can be tailored to your skill level.
Weaving on a drawloom is a lot of fun. Learn to weave your name or any pattern you can put onto graph paper. Two different types of drawlooms are set up for learning to weave, both damask and pattern weaving. Plan on three days. Longer workshops can include warping the drawloom.
Rag rugs woven in Sweden have some distinctive characteristics. There are some beautiful designs woven in plain weave as well as some woven with threaded patterns. Usually there is a loom ready for you to weave a full sized rug, or you can weave samples and learn several different techniques.
There are both drall weaves commonly used for linens and fabrics, as well as the art weaves used for decorative pieces. Some looms may already be set up before you come. You can suggest some weaves that you are interested in. Many can be woven on four shafts, but you can also select a weave which requires more than four.
$90.00 per day for a six hour studio class, including lunch and use of the equipment. For more information on these classes, contact Joanne by email or toll free: 866-890-7314. Please ask about local places to stay. We recommend the Elkhorn Mountain Inn in Montana City. They are the closest and they give discounts to my weavers.
Woven by Rachel SnackWeave two overshot patterns with the same threading using this downloadable weave draft to guide you. This pattern features the original draft along with one pattern variation. Some yarns shown in the draft are available to purchase in our shop: 8/2 cotton, wool singles, 8/4 cotton (comparable to the 8/4 linen shown).
please note: this .pdf does not explain how to read a weaving draft, how to interpret the draft onto the loom, or the nuances of the overshot structure.
This is a digital .pdf. Please add this weave draft to your cart along with anything else you’d like to purchase, check-out, and you’ll be sent a link to download it.
Product Information38 Projects to Practice Your SkillsOvershot is perhaps the most iconic weaving technique--think antique coverlets and fancy table runners--yet many weavers are intimidated by its complex-looking structure. But it doesn"t have to be difficult! In this book, Susan Kesler-Simpson makes overshot approachable by breaking it down piece by piece so that the weaver understands how it works, and then she puts it all back together so that weavers will have the confidence to make their own overshot patterns or to try any of the 38 overshot projects she has designed for the book. "Susan"s explanations are to the point and easy to understand. When you read through the chapters, it"s as if Susan is sitting there with you, telling you in a friendly voice how to weave overshot step by step." - excerpt from the Foreword by Tom Knisely
This weekend, my computer crashed and I applied for another installation number and within hours of getting the computer running I was able to use my Fibreworks program again. The ultimate of service and support. This is a very easy program to navigate and wow on sale. Definitely a wonderful tool for weavers to consider.
I have been considering getting weaving softwear and really liked this demo. I understand that I can download it for free to try, but I see people saying there is a discount or sale associated with this website but have not seen where that has been stated. Where can I find the discount price and how to obtain the discount? Thanks for such great weaving classes – I am learning SO much as I am a fairly new weaver in general, and just moved from a ridgid heddle loom to an 8 shaft in January.
There is (or at least was a year or two ago) a decent iPad program called iWeaveIt. It isn’t as fancy, but it does the basics. You buy it in chunks. The basic one has threading and color then you can add on bits that do things like heddle counts etc. It is made by a woman who is a weaver and a software developer! I just checked the app store and it is still there. It looks like she has a phone version now, too! Good luck!
I think the systems are super different, so I wouldn’t hold my breath, but there is a program called iWeaveIt available for iPads and apparently now iPhones as well (I just checked to make sure it still exists). I used it for awhile but I prefer using my computer. It isn’t quite as fancy (or at least it wasn’t 2 years ago), but it was stable and did what it claims. The woman who makes it is both a developer and a weaver so she knows what’s up.
I only use ipads so I use the IweaveIt program which I have found very user friendly. I downloaded the Fiberworks program for Windows on an older computer so I could compare the two. I really hope that an update for “i” machines will be available in the future. Thanks for the exposure to how best to use this program.
Hi Heidi – I thought you asked about Linux for your laptop. However, you just mentioned your iPad. Fiberworks PCW does not work on the iPad which runs on Apple iOS. However, it does run on Mac and PC computers that each use a different operating system. There is a program that can use on our iPad or iPhone called iWeaveit and you can get it in the App store.
