The Moore 1440 Precision Index is a serrated-tooth circle divider of highest accuracy using two face gears of identical shape and pitch. During operation, the table is displaced axially to disengage the teeth and radially to the desired angle. The instrument is guaranteed to be accurate to within ±0.1 second of arc at any of the 1440 indexed positions

I have one of the 10 inch Moore tables, i actually think its 10-1/4 diameter or something like that. Bought it at a shop that was going out of business and was selling off their eqpt rather than auctioning it.

He had that same Moore table, and one of the newer (probably 1960"s or 70"s) Troyke 9 inch. Was able to negotiate for both tables for about $150. One of my best bargains ever. Both tables looked ugly, but were covered in some oil based congealed slime that acted as a preservative. Who knows, maybe it was still the original cosmoline.

The Troyke cleaned up to almost pristine. The Moore, I have yet to clean up, bit it will come out very nice when I do. I even have the right angle Moore accesory plate to go with it. If I think about it, I"ll post a picture of the right angle plate tonight.

My guess is that the Moore is probably overkill for us homeshoppers. Even if it wasn"t designed for milling. Its probably best suited for use as a hole positioner or other operations where the rotating table is locked down and you"re not turning the crank while you"re milling. Look at the small crank handle of the 10" Moore. It"s probably 1/3 of the size of the handle on my 9" Troyke. Not really meant for cranking against the forces of a cutting endmill.

There are several brands with greater mechanical accuracy than the Moore rotabs, but they"re all optical microscope style tables that read against an engraved rule, just like some of the larger jig boring machines. There was a semi-recent thread on PM about the subject.

But back in reality, even midrange CNC tables now offer 2 arcsecond accuracy, backlash free. Unless you can find one used, the money is much better spent on a CNC table with standalone servo driver/DRO. The high end of rotary tables - entirely noncontact bearings and drive systems with very, very accurate feedback devices - completely blow anything mechanical out of the water. You just can"t mechanically compete with modern positioning equipment. We"re no longer restrained by periodic errors, stick slip, or other mechanical flaws. Sitting on air or magnetic bearings, with interferometer, cap gauge, or scale feedback, your accuracy is only limited by your resolution, and the environment you put it in.

Such devices are rare. Given a linear axis machine with the same drive and positioning equipment, the machine moving on linear axes is going to beat the snot out of a modern rotary table in terms of positioning accuracy. Rotary only becomes relevant to modern equipment when a part must be rotated to meet the spindle.

A crossed roller bearing is a bearing structure in which rollers are arranged between the inner and outer rings. The rollers are arranged in a straight row with a 45° contact angle, enabling the back bearing structure of a ball bearing to be realized with a single row, and the structure is capable of receiving loads from multiple directions simultaneously. The rotary table and cross roller bearings can be directly connected, which reduces the number of structural parts.

Since the rotational accuracy of the rotary table is directly related to the accuracy of the rollers, high rotational accuracy can be obtained depending on the accuracy grade of the rollers. In addition, since cross roller bearings have low frictional force and can be operated with light force, micrometer heads can be used in the fine-tuning rotation mechanism to obtain high positioning accuracy.
