These approvals are especially important for drinking water applications, where it is crucial that the components do not pose a risk of contamination and do not affect taste and smell. Some of these approvals specifically deal with the materials such as rubber, epoxy coating, plastics and brass used in valves, and some with the complete valve and function. Surprisingly, there are very few pan-European standards. Instead, standards are determined at national level and even in some cases by the local water works in the respective countries.

Today, AVK is the only valve manufacturer with its own rubber compound manufacturing site. We have developed a family of rubber compounds for drinking water that we consider universal, as it complies with the broadest possible range of approval requirements. However, some countries like Japan and South Korea have specific requirements where special compounds are required.

Anders G. Christensen, Sales and R&D Director at AVK GUMMI A/S says: "The end users of AVK valves count on us to help them navigate this welter of standards, even though this is not an easy task. Regulatory requirements themselves can be a moving target, and the number of required approvals is increasing year after year, while many of the existing approvals are undergoing constant revisions".

AVK plays an active part, not only in meeting regulatory requirements, but also in helping to establish them. “At present, we are working with the German authorities to help define and secure a transition to a new approval system that is even better than the previous one”, says Anders G. Christensen.

It is evident that materials like brass and epoxy coating also are of high importance, as these, if not chosen or applied correctly, may also contaminate drinking water. For instance, new EU standards for brass have resulted in a positive list of approved brass materials aiming to set limits for cadmium and lead emission that might migrate into the drinking water. Consequently, AVK has implemented a new brass material for all components, which are in contact with drinking water. Furthermore, only epoxy manufacturers with the main drinking water approvals are selected for AVK valves, and the coating process in our factories strictly follow the application recommendations set by the epoxy manufacturers. In addition, our coating process is GSK approved.

Niels Jørgen Hedegaard, Head of Quality at AVK International A/S in Denmark adds: "Authorities such as the German DVGW, the British WRAS, the French NF and the Dutch KIWA offer standards and approvals for finished valves, and these are also recognized and accepted by other countries that presently don’t have their own approval regulations. By obtaining and maintaining the most widely accepted water approvals worldwide, we assure our customers that AVK valves always meet the highest quality and safety standards".

All of this adds up to a major investment of time and money for AVK in order to obtain new and maintain existing approvals. "Each approval requires a massive amount of documentation and paperwork, and it can often take weeks or even months to work through the entire approval process" says Niels Jørgen Hedegaard. Re-certification is required every three to five years, and the entire process involves factory audits, product tests and documentation reviews.

The costs are therefore significant. "It’s an expense, no doubt," says Niels Jørgen Hedegaard, "but we regard it as a long-term investment. By testing the quality and safety of our valves against the requirements, we ensure that customers always can rely on AVK valves, as opposed to other valves available in the market that do not meet the strict regulatory standards."

Drinking water is becoming a scarce resource. Therefore, it is of vital importance that we all do our best not to contaminate it, while distributing it to the users. AVK as a global player within valves is certainly committed to keeping drinking water safe by making the best valves in the water business.

AVK series 851 double orifice, triple action air valves are designed to allow air to rapidly either escape or enter the pipe system when filling or draining, as well as for automatic discharge of accumulated air during normal working conditions. The unique ‘Aerokinetic’ design allows air to rush out of the system at great speed without forcing the float upwards and closing it prematurely. This makes sure that the valve closes only after all air has left the system and water has entered the chamber.

ABBEY ROGERS offers a lift assist device that allows for the testing of safety relief valves while still in line, and operational. The AVK is an electro-hydraulic computerized testing unit that when connected to the valve records the pressure at which the valve lifts. The AVK connects to the stem of the safety valve and measures the vertical forces exerted by the spring and load train of the valve. These tests are preformed while your system is under pressure, therefore no loss of production due to removing safety relief valves. The documentation provided will satisfy ASME & Insurance inspectors.

Valve requirements for the AVK are the following: pressure under the valve, must be flanged, must be at least a 21" clearance above the valve, service must be non-liquid, and non-hazardous vapors. The AVK is ideal for testing valves in place which will determine which valves need to be pulled out of service for repair, and which can remain inline through another cycle. The AVK will reduce manpower and downtime expenses.

As this project required an innovative and sustainable solution, AVK China was involved. The project presented various difficulties such as a remote installation site, a harsh environment, high complexity of construction and difficulties in product maintenance. In response to this, high efficiency, durability, and low maintenance costs were the core considerations for the selection of the right valves. AVK China provided 36 large-diameter double eccentric butterfly valves of DN2400, which meet the highest quality standards, can withstand the harshest conditions, and ensure that the products comply with drinking water certification.

The AVK double eccentric butterfly valves have several features, which all contribute to the high quality of the final solution to the customer. First, the valves have a tilted disc design for extended service life and ease of operation. Second, AVK is a leader in rubber composite and coating technologies, both of which are critical to our products and their life span and durability.

This also means that the valve disc sealing ring is processed by AVK’s unique EPDM rubber, which is certified for drinking water and has excellent resilience performance. In addition, the valve shaft seal can be replaced under pressure, which is easy to maintain. This ensures safe sealing from the inside to the outside, and effectively prevents impurities from entering. Finally, the inner and outer epoxy coatings of the valve are sprayed according to the highest standards - DIN30677-2 and GSK.

These requirements cover the performance of and methods for testing hydrants intended for use in piping systems supplying water for fire protection service.

The UL 246 approval tests include a 10-day moist ammonia air stress cracking test, testing of rubber parts according to UL 157 and tests of operation, leakage and head loss.

Shell strength is tested by a pressure of four times the working pressure lasting for five minutes, and after the test there should be no evidence of damage. The standard also includes testing seat leakage at two times working pressure for five minutes without damage or leakage to be seen.

The valve body, cover and bonnet are subjected to a hydrostatic test of four times working pressure (or at least 48 bar) for five minutes and there should be no sustaining cracking or permanent distortion.

Stem seal leakage is tested on a partially open valve subjected to working pressure for five minutes. No visible stem leakage must appear. Both resilient and metal seats are also leakage tested.

These requirements cover indicator posts, including wall and underground types, for use in operating valves of the inside-screw pattern and for indicating the position of the gates in such valves. Indicator posts are primarily intended for use with valves controlling water supplies to sprinkler, deluge, water spray, foam, and standpipe systems used in private fire service where connections enter buildings.

A vertical indicator post should withstand 1220 Nm in both directions (for valves up to 350mm) – the value is 815 Nm for a wall type indicator post (up to 250mm).

Disc strength is tested at two times working pressure held for five minutes and repeated for both directions. Hydrostatic strength is tested at a hydrostatic pressure of four times working pressure (or at least 48 bar) for five minutes. No visible rupture, cracking or permanent distortion of the valve body must be seen.

Furthermore, the FM standard also dictates tests of valve assembly strength, ultimate operator torque, durability, close quarters durability (butterfly type), friction loss determination, water hammer, indicator strength, water absorption, aging, corrosion protection coating and much more.

AVK series 5190 products for fire protection meet the UL 312 standard. The products 5190/10-001 and 5190/20-001 are furthermore approved according to the FM 1210 standard.

These requirements cover check valves DN25 and larger, used in piping systems supplying water for fire protection service. The UL 312 approval tests include a cycling performance test, testing of rubber parts, adhesion test for resilient seat materials and leakage test.

The valve is subject to a cycle test of 50,000 cycles, no more than six cycles per minute. The test is carried out at atmospheric pressure and no excessive wear, damage or failure of any valve component must occur. Seat leakage tests are performed on resilient seat and metal-to-metal seats. For the resilient seat, no leakage is allowed during test with hydrostatic pressure of 2, 6.8 and 12 bar (and working pressure if higher than 12 bar) for five minutes each.

For the metal-to-metal seat, leakage must not exceed a value of approximately 11.8 ml/hour per centimeter of nominal valve size when subjected to 2, 6.8 and 12 bar (and working pressure if higher than 12 bar) for five minutes each.
