In some ways, I am actually surprised there weren"t more of these types of devices being produced, since the design is relatively simple and is relatively low tech. The item as-is looks a bit daunting when it comes to installation, although it"s simply plugging in the wires and inserting the batteries, and then putting the electronic ball valve inline with the cold water inlet.

The system works by sending a 3.3V DC signal down the signal wire to the sensor itself. The sensor itself has circuit tracing across it with alternating polarities. When a drop of water lands on the sensor itself, it bridges the gap between the different polarities and essentially completes the circuit. The control panel then senses the current on the sensor wires and in turn sends a signal to the control wire for the electronic ball valve to close. I have had this for a year now and have not had any issues with the system (no stuck valves or anything). While the water heater has not failed during this time, a water squirt test a couple of times during the year always works and the ball valve would close as intended.

6. The electronic ball valve plastic cap is bulky and can be problematic when installing (although the cap itself can be temporarily removed to give slightly more room for tightening the connections).

9. The control panel plug used for the ball valve uses a molded plug that has bunches of tiny wires exposed close to the plug itself. Tugging on the plug the wrong way can potentially break/disconnect one or more of these wires, rendering the system useless.

10. The system does not have any self-testing functionality. You really do not know if the system is working properly until a catastrophic fault occurs. You will need to take the valve out of line and inspect the ball valve with the close button to confirm that it is indeed functioning properly.
