Kelso"s pressure relief valve raises the bar on best available technology from railway equipment suppliers. Our external PRV design for general purpose tank cars improves reliability and performance over the older internal models that allowed active components to come in contact with the commodities being transported. In addition, the maintenance requirements for the Kelso PRV are less frequent due to elimination of contact with the goods inside the car, and the inspection process each time the tank car is loaded is far less time-consuming due to the Kelso PRVs location outside the car.  With thousands of units in service the Kelso external PRV has demonstrated reliable operations in many tough service conditions without need of maintenance or unscheduled repair.

The development of Kelso"s vacuum relief valve was driven by customer demand for better performance due to high failure rates of older models of VRVs. The Kelso VRV features constant force pressure springs and meets DOT-117 tank car specifications. Kelso"s VRV is available as 1.5, 3 or 4.5 psi with a 2.5 inch threaded connection or flange.

Today, Kelso Technologies (U.S.A.) Inc. announced it obtained an order for 100 JS75 SRV pressure relief valves from one of North America’s three largest tank car builders — Kelso’s largest sale to date. The purchaser’s name wasn’t disclosed.

By late March, Kelso will deliver the JS75 SRVs to the purchaser, who plans to install the relief valves on tank cars to be built by May’s end. The sale will generate gross revenue in the “six figures,” according to Kelso.

The JS75 SRV valve is designed to prevent product contamination and back pressure, eliminate the need for a safety valve nozzle and be retrofitted to existing tank cars. Smaller and lighter compared with other pressure-relief valves, the JS75 SRV features an unobstructed opening and flow aperture.

“Kelso is now working with two of the three largest North American tank car manufacturers, [which] provides potential new sales opportunities … for both new car builds and their own lease fleet of tank cars,” said Kelso President and Chief Executive Officer Stephen Grossman in a prepared statement.

ADVERTISEMENTCanadian-based Kelso Technologies Inc., a railcar equipment developer, received approval of its external, stem-free JS75H pressure relief valve from the Association of American Railroads in mid-October. The new model doesn"t have O-rings and doesn"t require pneumatic toolsfeatures that offer maximum operator safety and performance, according to Kelso Technologies President John Carswell.

In Skokie, Ill., Midland Manufacturing, a railroad tank car safety valve producer, introduced its new A-2165 pressure relief valve. According to Kevin Cook, Midland vice president of sales and marketing, the valve has a start-to-discharge weight of 165 pounds, as opposed to the traditional 75 pounds. Its O-ring seal also prevents leakage and optimizes flow rates for increased operator safety.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia and BONHAM, Texas, Feb. 17, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Kelso Technologies Inc. (TSX: KLS) (NYSE American: KIQ) (“Kelso” or the “Company”) reports that all of the participating oil refiners engaged in the service trials of the Company’s new 2” angle valve (K2AV) have successfully installed the requisite number of K2AV units and full AAR compliance testing continues. The Kelso K2AV is a device specifically designed to transfer LP-Gas and anhydrous ammonia in pressurized railroad tank car applications.

The current pressure car fleet includes approximately 85,000 tank cars and each pressure tank car utilizes three K2AV units. These are high value specialty products and management’s objectives are to generate multi-million dollar revenues from the K2AV as oil refiners specify the Company’s products in larger numbers. The pressure tank car market is a previously untapped market for Kelso to develop.

The development of the K2AV has been driven by customers’ demand for better performing angle valves due to irregular performance of the current products available in the market today. The Kelso K2AV is a single piece of high-quality fabricated steel eliminating porosity weakness found in commonly used castings. It is designed for universal use, there are no wetted or outlet O-rings to change out; it has a self-draining, self-cleaning seat; it has a low operating torque for ease of use; it has an adjustable packing gland; and it is a serviceable valve. The K2AV has an AAR standard mounting that will allow for ease of interchangeability with other 2” angle valves. The K2AV is completely manufactured in the USA.

The K2AV rounds out the Kelso Pressure Car Kit which includes the pressure relief valve (PCH), an excess flow check valve, a thermometer well, a needle (sampling) valve and magnetic gauging device. The availability of the Kelso Pressure Car Kit provides customers with the opportunity for one-stop sourcing for pressure car needs.

James R. Bond, CEO of the Company, comments that, “The Company’s technology portfolio which is a key component of Kelso’s long-term success goals has advanced as scheduled despite COVID-19 related issues. Kelso remains dedicated to the development of new innovative safety technologies that deliver long term, reliable high performance for the Company’s stakeholders. The response to Kelso’s K2AV from potential customers who were involved in the final design specifications has been very encouraging. Kelso is prepared for full K2AV production and distribution when the final AAR approvals are received.”

Chicago, Ill. — Union Tank Car Company (UTLX) and Kelso Technologies have entered into a five-year Joint Marketing and Development Agreement to manufacture and market Kelso’s patented JS SRV line of pressure relief valves, claimed to remove the risk of load contamination.

One of the key differences in the new Kelso valve of interest to shippers is the use of a constant force spring externally mounted on the top of the tank, rather than a spiral spring, like in most current poppet valves. The company explains that since the valve doesn’t protrude into the tank interior the potential of it coming into contact with the product being shipped and resulting in contamination is removed. So is the likely need to remove and clean the valve before another load is loaded.

"Kelso JS SRV pressure relief valves are well-suited for both hazardous and non-hazardous product service and represent an alternative source of supply for quality safety relief devices," explained UTLX President, Frank Lester. "These valves will also be a good choice for UTLX customers who ship products that require protective interior tank car coatings. We always prefer to offer quality valves built by McKenzie."

Union Tank Car will offer Kelso’s externally sprung safety valves as replacement valves on certain UTLX railroad tank cars, which are owned by UTLX and leased to bulk liquid shippers.

UTLX affiliate, McKenzie Valve and Machining Company will have the exclusive manufacturing rights in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico for all Kelso JS SRV pressure relief valves for sale to the North American rail industry. These include Kelso’s existing JS75 SRV and other valve designs that may be developed.

Kelso Technologies Inc. (TSX:KLS)(NYSE MKT:KIQ) ("Kelso" or the "Company") is pleased to report that the Company has completed the development of Kelso"s new rail tank car bottom outlet valve (BOV) featuring ceramic components that are designed to increase valve life and reliability. Kelso has received the approval from the Association of American Railroads (AAR) for the field service trials of this unique BOV design.

The ceramic BOV is an evolution of our current stainless steel BOV design that is currently in service trials. Most general service tank rail tank cars carrying non-hazardous and hazardous commodities including crude oil and ethanol are equipped with a bottom outlet valve through which the tank car is emptied. Current BOV designs utilizing stainless steel components have well-known shortcomings specifically in transport services where the commodity is abrasive or has corrosive characteristics that are detrimental to the materials from which the BOV is made.

Kelso, at the request of its customers to develop a better BOV, has incorporated cutting-edge ceramic technology to overcome these shortcomings. This ceramic technology exhibits superior chemical resistance and mechanical strength which are both vital to the performance of a rail tank car bottom outlet valve. Our testing of current metallic valve components has confirmed that our new BOV can deliver a significant improvement in valve performance through the use of ceramic materials.

James R. Bond, CEO of the Company comments that: "Kelso continues to develop and achieve new designs that provide better alternatives to service the unique challenges of transporting hazardous materials. Our innovation objectives are focused on creating "best available safety technology" products designed to better protect the lives of first responders and all in harms way. Our new ceramic-based BOV is a unique innovation that will be the first commercial use of ceramics to be approved by the AAR for use in rail tank cars. Our industry has been bogged down with regulatory and economic challenges over the past year but we remain optimistic that our long-term product strategies should eventually lead to enhanced financial performance when economic conditions improve."

Kelso is a railway equipment supplier that designs, produces and sells proprietary tank car service equipment used in the safe handling and containment of hazardous materials during transport. Products are specifically designed to provide economic and operational advantages while reducing the potential effects of human error and environmental harm during the transport of hazardous materials.
