All Military Specification callouts have different meanings worth noting when buying Wire Rope, Cable, and Strand. Knowing the difference between the various callouts ensures you choose the right product for your applications. While some companies have limited types of Mil-Spec products, Strand Core has a wide range available. Strand Core sells five different Mil-Spec products:Mil-DTL-83420,MIL-DTL-87161,MIL-DTL-18375,MIL-DTL-83140, andMil-W-18242B. All five specifications are approved for use by all Departments and Agencies of the Department of Defense. Continue reading to learn more about each of these Military Specifications.
This specification explains the requirements for flexible wire rope designed for aircraft control. MIL-DTL-83420 covers requirements of carbon steel and corrosion-resistant steel for the flexible wire rope.
There are two types of wire rope that MIL-DTL-83420 includes: Type I (Non-jacketed Wire Rope) and Type II (Jacketed Wire Rope). Type I can operate within a -65 Degree F to +250 Degree F temperature range in dust, fuel, wind, and oil spills, in wash-down, and other environmental stresses and aircraft experiences. Type II can perform to the same operations, but with a jacket attached to the wire rope.
In terms of compositions, there are specific guidelines for all materials that can be read about on pages 4 & 5 of our Mil-DTL-83420 guide here. The key takeaway is that there are two different Compositions for MIL-DTL-83420: Composition A (made with Carbon steel, zinc, or tin over zinc-coated) and Composition B (corrosion-resistant steel).
This specification explains the requirements of non-flexible wire rope used in aircraft applications. MIL-DTL-87161 covers the requirements for carbon steel and corrosion-resistant steel for wire strand used in aircraft applications.
The two types of wire strand within this specification are Type I (non-flexible, 1x7 class) and Type II (non-flexible, 1x19 class). Both types have two Constructions, one for Right Lay and the second for Left Lay. Both types must perform to specified levels for breaking strength, stretch limits, ductility of steel, test load, and coating adherences. There are two composition types of the wire rope. Composition A is made of carbon steel that is zinc coated. Composition B is made of corrosion-resistant steel.More information of Type I and Type II MIL-DTL-87161 can be found on pages 4 & 5 of our guidehere.
This specification covers the requirements for corrosion-resistant, nonmagnetic steel wire rope used in aircraft flight controls. The wire rope can operate within a -65 Degree F to +250 Degree F temperature range in dust, fuel, wind, and oil spills, in wash-down, and other environmental stresses and aircraft experiences.
For material, corrosion-resistant steel that is in accordance with SAE HS-1086 must be used. Each wire of the wire rope must be coated with a friction-preventing, non-corrosive lubricant. All MIL-DTL-18375 wire rope must meet the breaking strength, endurance, stretch limits, ductility of steel, test load, magnetic permeability and operating temperature range that has been provided. More information can be found on page 4 of our MIL-DTL-18375 wire rope guide.
This specification covers the requirements for rotation-resistant preformed stainless steel wire rope intended for aircraft rescue hoists, utility, retrieval hoists, and winching applications.
The preformed stainless steel wire rope is available in two types. Type I is a rotation-resistant 19x7 construction that is used for hoisting (vertical) operations. Type II is a rotation-resistant 10x7 construction (7x19 IWRC) used for winching (vertical, horizontal, or at-angle) operations. Similar to other Mil-Spec products, packaging, testing and certain performance levels must be met.
The critical takeaway to understand about Mil-Spec products is they are designed with specific applications in mind and have strict rules for materials, sizes, performance, and packaging. Due to the guidelines for each of the Mil-Spec products being particular, buying Mil-Spec guarantees strength, durability, and a high-quality product that has been manufactured to the optimal level.

Our stranding department produces wire rope in a wide range of constructions and with a variety of steel materials. Continental Cable also offers a wide selection of domestic and imported wire rope.
Small diameter 7x19 (and 7x7) construction wire rope is sometimes referred to as "aircraft cable". This is a generic term to describe braided steel wire rope that is no larger than 3/8 of an inch in diameter. These size cables and constructions are used in a variety of applications such as Aircraft controls, running rigging on sailboats, exercise equipment, winches and garage doors and other wide range of mechanical applications. 7X19 is used when flexibility and fatigue are concerns.

While talking to people at a recent trade show it hit me: There is a lack of information in the marketplace concerning the quality of available wire rope . Most people feel that there is one general level of cable quality, usually based on their experience with imported wire rope. Let"s take a minute to clear up the confusions many people have about wire rope availability and performance.
When I dig a little deeper, I always find out that the cable they are using is low quality import material, often from China, that never seems to perform the way they intended. Short service life, broken wires and low break strength are often tolerated because the wire rope is just so very cheap. And the lowering of quality and performance from your wire rope tends to feed on itself: Inexpensive cable performance is sub-par, so the purchaser becomes conditioned to poor performance. This translates into a buying decision focused solely on the price of the wire rope, which in turn leads to distributors looking for less and less expensive material, which dictates the quality, and so on.
Ultimately, this cycle results in wire rope that is manufactured to just meet the thresholds of performance required by specification, and nothing more. Some applications can accept this material, but the majority of customers would be best served by selecting a higher quality wire rope.
When the performance is a key element of your application, you should be requesting a high quality domestic wire rope. Why should you purchase a domestic rope? Domestic manufacturers work with smaller lot sizes and focus on quality.
It will require a larger investment to purchase and employ the higher quality material, but that will end the downward quality spiral created by using the least expensive cable you can find. You will notice, first and foremost, that your cable will last longer and perform at an improved level. You will also notice that the added cost for purchasing a domestic wire rope is minimal when compared to the extended life you will receive.
So for your next purchase, request a domestic wire rope for your application. Here are some general rules to ensure you receive the best cable available:
1. Not all wire rope is created equal. There are specifications for wire rope, including Federal Specification RR-W-410 and Military Specification MIL-DTL-83420, both detailing the level of quality and performance required for specific applications. When purchasing a wire rope, be sure to reference one of these specifications to ensure you receive a higher quality material.
2. Just because you purchased the rope from a domestic source does not mean that it is domestic.Make sure you specifically request a domestic wire rope.
3. Domestic Wire rope is available.there are several manufacturers that would be more than delighted t quote your requirements. You can find a list of companies on the Domestic Wire Rope Committee web site.
