Wire rope u clips have a u-bolt that is secured into a saddle by two nuts. Wire rope assemblies almost always require two, or more wire rope clamps to secure the wire rope properly. Wire rope cable clamps come in a variety of materials ranging from galvanized and zinc plated steel, to stainless steel. The two most important different types, however, are drop forged and malleable wire rope u bolt clips.

Drop forged wire rope clips are more heavy duty than malleable rope clips and can therefore be used for more heavy-duty rigging applications. In addition, they are galvanized with a heavy coating of zinc that resists the corrosion and abuse found in rugged work environments. Wire rope cable clamps of every type are not designed to be used in an overhead lift but drop forged wire rope u bolt clamps can be used to suspend an overhead load. Regarding the first question, if the load is being moved, wire rope clips are not to be used. If the load is being held in place, heavy-duty drop forged wire rope clips can be used. For the second question, if the load is near the ground, malleable wire rope clips may be used, as their lighter duty design is more than enough for the job. In the rigging and lifting industry there is a common saying that is used to remember the correct way to use wire rope u clips: “Never saddle a dead horse.” This means that the saddle of the u clamp should always be in contact with the live side of the wire rope rather than the dead side. The dead side of the wire rope is the side of the eye that has the cut end. The dead end is attached to the live end of the wire rope to form an eye and it is imperative that the saddle be on the live side of the wire rope.

While using a clip may decrease the breaking strength of a rope slightly more than a swage would, there are a few advantages over swages. A Wire Rope Clip can be removed and even reused without much wear. This makes clips ideal for less permanent fixes.

When a clip is installed properly, the decrease in the breaking strength of the wire. Eyes installed with Cable Clips will maintain 80-90% of their strength. However, when a clip is not installed properly, the decrease in breaking strength will be much more significant.

For the most part, Galvanized Steel is a little easier on your wallet than Stainless Steel and it will take a lot of abuse without much damage to show. However Galvanized Steel is not quite as strong as Stainless Steel and it can’t be used in jobs where the rope may be exposed to saltwater or excessive moisture.

The traditional styles of wire rope clips usually have three components: a U-shaped bolt, a forged or cast iron saddle, and two nuts.

Cast and malleable wire rope clips can only be used under light duty loads applications with relatively light loads, such as handrails, fencing, guard rails, etc.

Keep three or more wire rope clips attached at the end of the wire rope dead end, space between each wire rope clip should be at least 6 times the wire rope diameter.

The saddle shall be placed on the live end of the wire rope, with the U-bolt on the dead-end side—Remember the well-known saying: “Never saddle a dead horse.” Use at least two or three wire rope clips to secure the ends properly to the length of the rope, and tighten nuts evenly one by one until reaching the recommended torque.

While wire rope clips are not designed to be used in an overhead lifting situation (swage sleeves should be used instead), drop forged wire rope clips are a heavy duty wire rope clip that can be used for sustaining overhead loads. Examples include guy lines, support lines, scaffolding, etc. Drop forged clips are galvanized, meaning they have a heavy coating of a zinc solution that will hold up to worksite abuse and the elements for a long time. Drop forged steel are excellent for use as guy wire clamps for heavy duty guying applications because they are both strong and resistant to corrosion.

Malleable Clips are a light duty wire rope clip and are not for anything overhead. As the name “malleable” indicates, it is a softer wire rope clip, thus a lighter duty option. They can be used for fences and other applications that do not sustain loads overhead.

The ‘overhead lifting’ versus ‘sustaining overhead loads’ can be confusing, but a good rule of thumb to ask is: “Is the object being moved or being held in place?” If it is being moved, then wire rope clips are not to be used. If it is being held in place, then the next question is: Is it above ground (suspended from ceiling, an awning, scaffolding, etc…) or will it be on a fence or on another object near the ground? If it is above ground, heavy duty drop forged is the best choice. If on a fence near the ground, malleable clips are acceptable.

The proper way to use wire rope clips can be remembered this way: “Never saddle a dead horse.” The saddle of the clip is the piece that fits into the U bolt. The dead end of a wire rope is the end of the eye that contains the cut side. The U bolt should always be in contact with the dead end, while the saddle should be on the live end.

The correct way to attach wire rope clips is illustrated above. Apply the first clip one base width from the dead end of the wire rope. The base or saddle should bear on the line end of the rope – U-bolt on the short end Tighten nuts firmly. Attach second clip as close to loop as possible. Tighten nuts but not firmly. Attach balance clips spaced equally between first two clips. Tighten all nuts completely. Apply initial load – inspect nuts and retighten. Inspect all clips periodically.

The number of clips shown is based on using right regular or Large lay wire rope, 6×19 class or 6×37 class, fibre core IWRX, IPS or XIPS. The number of clips shown also applies to right regular lay wire rope, 8×19 class and 18×7 class, fibre core, IPS or XIPS, sizes 1-1/2 inch and smaller.

If Seal construction or similar large outer wire type construction in the 6×19 class is to be used for sizes 1-inch and larger, add one additional clip. For other classes or wire rope not mentioned, it may be necessary to add additional clips to the number shown, if more clips are used than shown, amount of rope turn back should be increased proportionately.
