SwageRight™ creates quality galvanized stainless steel wire rope in a 7x7 diameter that is best suited for rigging, lifting, towing, and heavy construction applications. Galvanization is ideal for heavy-duty applications and offers greater protection against deformation and wear.

Small diameter 7x7 and 7x19 construction cable is sometimes referred to as "aircraft cable". This is not intended for aircraft use, but designed for industrial and marine applications. When using wire rope clips with plastic coated cable, match clip size to un-coated cable diameter (3/16" cable coated to 1/4" takes 3/16" clip). Strip plastic coating off where clips will be positioned for full holding power.

Coated cable is a great option for uses where a wire rope needs both abrasion protection and flexibility. Aircraft vinyl coated cable, in a 7 x 19 configuration is an excellent choice when both flexibility and durability are required. A vinyl coating not only protects hands and makes the wire rope more easy to handle, it also seals in any lubrication on the wire rope, increasing its useful life. While the terms vinyl coated wire rope and plastic coated wire rope are often used interchangeably, there is very little differences in the rope style.

A coated steel cable comes in a variety of diameters and styles, and in the case of popular airline cable, is generally available in both a galvanized wire rope and a stainless steel wire rope. Both styles of plastic coated cable provide protection from the elements. A galvanized vinyl coated steel rope is slightly stronger than a coated stainless steel cable, but a stainless steel wire rope will provide a better level of protection from rust and other corrosion.

Adding a jacket to your cable or wire rope provides extra durability and helps increase the lifespan of the cable or wire rope. Sandin Manufacturing has the capability to extrude bare cable from .014" diameter to .625" diameter.

Coated cable is available in various types of nylon, UV resistant vinyl, polyethylene, polypropylene, and hytrel. Custom color matching is available for the different coatings.

Stainless steel 304, uncoated wire rope, with 7x7 standard construction, is used in pulleys, and in aircraft and automotive controls. Stainless steel 304, also called 18-8, is corrosion-resistant, and withstands high temperatures for a wide range of operation. Stainless steel 304 is a versatile material, commonly used in a wide variety of applications, and in saline atmospheres. Vinyl, also called Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), is corrosion-resistant, lightweight, and has high strength. It resists reactions with acids, gasolines, alcohol, and hydrocarbons. It is flexible, and is resistant to weather and ultra-violet (UV) rays. Vinyl coating is a hard, durable plastic that resists most chemicals, has excellent dimensional stability, and can be sterilized. It resists oil, has absorbs low levels of moisture, and is non-conductive. 7x7 strand core has seven strands of wire rope with seven wires in each strand, formed helically around a strand core. 7x7 strand core is stronger but less flexible than 6x19 and 6x36 class constructions.

Though not often used in the heavy lifting and hoisting operations for which wire ropes are most commonly known, plastic coated cables are optimal for consumer goods and applications in which increased abrasion and corrosion resistance and cost-effectiveness are desired.

Though the work is often less strenuous the goal of easier lifting and hoisting is still applicable to plastic coated cables which also afford increased durability. Fitness industries use plastic coated cable in most weight machines; theater industries use black powder coated cables for stage rigging; outdoor playground equipment often use plastic coated cables, and many types of electronic equipment, communications devices, and medical devices use miniature wire rope and wire rope fittings.

Plastic jackets are also used when complete adherence to the wire or cable is not necessary. Casings made of non-plastics may be coated in plastics for added water resistance, visual appeal, etc.

In all applications, the construction of both the wire cable and the coating itself should be carefully considered to avoid mechanical failure or ill-performance.

There are three basic components: metal wire filaments, strands, and cores. Filaments, cold drawn metal rods of relatively small diameter, are twisted or braided to form strands. These strands may consist of two or several dozen filaments and are wrapped in a helical pattern around a core which may be metal, fiber, or polymer based.

In addition to identifications based on all materials used, plastic coated stranded wires are identified by both the number of strands per cable and the number of filaments per strand respectively. Further considerations include overall diameter, difficulty of flattening, temperature resistance, average lifespan, and material construction.

The wires themselves are often fabricated from steel, stainless steel or galvanized steel, and then coated in either nylon or vinyl (PVC), although polyethylene coatings are applied for electrical insulation and polypropylene coating is used when chemical resistance is required.

Vinyl coating is the most common since it is by far the most cost-effective; although vinyl coated cables do not have optimal abrasion and fatigue resistance, they have better flexibility and UV light resistance than nylon coated cables.

Material choice is largely determined by the intended use for a cable. The rope can be coated at any stage of construction, whether individually coated filaments or an assembled cable.
