Use the "rag-and-visual" method to check for external damage. Grab the rope lightly and with a rag or cotton cloth, move the rag slowly along the wire. Broken wires will often "porcupine" (stick out) and these broken wires will snag on the rag. If the cloth catches, stop and visually assess the rope. It is also important to visually inspect the wire (without a rag). Some wire breaks will not porcupine.
Measure the rope diameter. Compare the rope diameter measurements with the original diameter. If the measurements are different, this change indicates external and/or internal rope damage.
Visually check for abrasions, corrosion, pitting, and lubrication inside the rope. Insert a marlin spike beneath two strands and rotate to lift strands and open rope.
Assess the condition of the rope at the section showing the most wear. Discard a wire rope if you find any of the following conditions:In running ropes (wound on drums or passed over sheaves), 6 or more broken wires in one rope lay length; 3 or more broken wires in one strand in one rope lay. Determining the diameter of the wire rope is an essential step of the installation process. Installers are required to double-check that the correct diameter rope is being used, as this impacts the rope’s breaking strength and load limit.
Wire ropes are measured with a parallel-jawed caliper (also called a machinist’s caliper). This is placed over the wire rope to measure the diameter – but if the rope is inserted at the wrong angle, you will get an inaccurate result.
The strands of a wire rope must be flush against the measuring portion of the caliper. If a raised strand is at the top, the measurement will have a smaller dimension, which could affect breaking strength calculations.
Wire ropes are reeled onto these spools for easy handling and shipments, as it prevents the rope from getting tangled or crushed. But unreeling the wire rope incorrectly can cause severe damage, such as snagged wires, twists, kinks, or unraveled strands.
A common mistake that is often made is to unreel the wire rope by laying the spool vertically on its axis. The wire rope has to be yanked off of the spool, which increases the likelihood of it getting kinked or twisted. The wire rope should also not touch the ground as it is unreeled, as this could damage the wires as well.
Instead, the reeled wire rope should be placed on a shaft that allows the spool to turn 360°. It also should require two people, one to slowly pull the rope off of the spool in a straight line and another to regulate the speed by controlling the turn rate.

The type of end preparations recommended depends on several factors. This includes the diameter of the rope and the number of wires and strands. In some cases, double seizing and fuse welding is required for additional securement. Failing to follow these instructions could result in the core or strands of the wire rope to slip and unravel.

Failing to follow through with routine maintenance and storage recommendations could cause the wire rope to rust, unravel, or kink. Further, keeping your wire rope on the ground, in wet areas, or directly in hot sunlight can cause it to break down faster.

Contractors use wire support systems because they are effective and easy to install. Although many different factors and features make some systems better for different applications, all wire rope support systems are comprised of the same basic components.
The wire rope is the cable with which the application is attached to the structural attachment. Different types of wire ropes are used for different load ratings. Common sizes include 1.5 mm, 2 mm and 3 mm. Because the cable is comprised of several strands of steel wire, it has a very high strength-to-weight ratio. As with all applications, product-specific materials should be consulted for the specific limitations of the system.
The locking device is the piece of hardware that holds the wire loop in place. Locking devices may look or install differently based on the manufacturer. Some locking devices are sold with small tools called “keys” that lock up or free the cable. Other locking devices may be keyless and simply require a manual manipulation to move the cable through it. Much like the cable, locking devices are limited to a specific load requirement. The load rating can be different than that of the cable, and installers should default to the lower of the two.
Inside the locking device, the wire is gripped with one or two spring-loaded cams that hold the wire in place. A single-cam device holds the wire by pressing it into the inside wall of the housing. A double-cam device holds the wire by clamping it between two spring-loaded cams. Double-cam devices generally have a stronger grip on the wire than single-cam devices.
End fittings are the hardware at the end of the wire rope made for a specific application. Some examples of end fittings include angle brackets, shot-fire pin brackets and hammer-on flange clips. When used in the correct setting, end fittings can install quickly and provide a secure attachment to almost any structure.
(1) Cable laid and 6 x 19 and 6 x 37 slings shall have a minimum clear length of wire rope 10 times the component rope diameter between splices, sleeves or end fittings.
(c) Safe Operating Temperatures. Fiber core wire rope slings of all grades shall be permanently removed from service if they are exposed to temperatures in excess of 200o F. When nonfiber core wire rope slings of any grade are used at temperatures above 400o F, or below minus 60o F, the sling manufacturer"s recommendations shall be followed.
(3) Where rope clip attachments are used, they shall be made with U-bolts on the dead or short end of the rope and the saddle on the live end. The minimum number of clips for end attachments shall be not less than indicated in manufacturer"s tables, but in no case shall be less than three for any permanent installation. Clips shall be drop-forged steel. The clips shall be spaced at a distance equal to at least six times the diameter of the rope. All clip or clamp bolts shall be kept tight after tightening while rope is under tension.
Employers must not use improved plow-steel wire rope and wire-rope slings with loads in excess of the rated capacities (i.e., working load limits) indicated on the sling by permanently affixed and legible identification markings prescribed by the manufacturer.
An eye splice made in any wire rope shall have not less than three full tucks. However, this requirement shall not operate to preclude the use of another form of splice or connection which can be shown to be as efficient and which is not otherwise prohibited.
Wire rope shall not be used if, in any length of eight diameters, the total number of visible broken wires exceeds 10 percent of the total number of wires, or if the rope shows other signs of excessive wear, corrosion, or defect.
Except for eye splices in the ends of wires and for endless rope slings, each wire rope used in hoisting or lowering, or in pulling loads, shall consist of one continuous piece without knot or splice.
Cable laid and 6 × 19 and 6 × 37 slings shall have a minimum clear length of wire rope 10 times the component rope diameter between splices, sleeves or end fittings.
Fiber core wire rope slings of all grades shall be permanently removed from service if they are exposed to temperatures in excess of 200 °F (93.33 °C).
