Responsibilities and precise job roles vary across the world, but offshore hierarchies generally fall into different broad roles. Based on data from 2019, here we list some of the most lucrative offshore platform-related jobs in the oil and gas industry. Since that time, jobs have come under increasing threat from the Covid-19 pandemic and advanced automation, so don’t rely on these numbers for your next job interview.
The salary of a drilling consultant working offshore ranges from $143,000 to as much as $305,000 a year. This makes it potentially one of the most lucrative offshore platform jobs around.
Drilling consultants supervise the daily operations of the rig and provide advice and consultation on several drilling issues. They coordinate with onshore supervisors and convey orders to on-site personnel to optimise rig production. They are also responsible for ordering new supplies and equipment, as well as maintaining the required number of workers on the platform at any point in time.
Offshore installation managers (OIM), who occupy a senior position on an offshore platform, typically earn an annual salary between $174,000 and $247,000. While the earnings potential reaches a lower maximum than consultants, it remains one of the most lucrative offshore platform jobs.
The starting salary of completion or workover staff is approximately $56,000 per annum while engineers and managers among them are paid as much as $181,000 a year. Workover or completion staff are responsible for preparing the wells for production and fixing any problems with active wells.

Taking charge of a vessel gives some level of freedom, though captains must adhere to international maritime laws. In some regions, shipping crews have been known to work in dangerous conditions for very little pay. While maritime regulations aim to prevent bad practices, a lack of enforcement has occasionally allowed serious human rights abuses.
Marine engineers plan, design, and construct offshore rigs, pipelines and equipment. They also repair and conduct environmental, operational, or performance tests on marine machinery and equipment such as remotely operated vehicles and drillships. They manage the lifecycle of the project and oversee maintenance tasks on the plant and machinery.

Working on an offshore oil rig can net you a pretty hefty income, but the work is anything but easy and can sometimes be hazardous. After hiring on to a rig, you"re put into a rotation where you"ll typically work two or three weeks on the rig and then three weeks back on shore. While on the rig, you"re expected to work every day and, for some positions, always be on call.
The main task of a rig electrician is to maintain and install the various electrical equipment found on an offshore oil rig. This equipment can include pumps, electrical panels, wiring conduits, heavy equipment and many other systems. Because there is so much equipment packed into every rig, electricians may have to work in cramped and dark environments. To be employed as a rig electrician, a candidate needs to posses the proper licensing and certification, which varies from state to state, but rig electrician jobs typically require qualification at the master or journeyman level.
According to Salary.com, the average annual salary for a rig electrician in 2020 was $54,243, with the standard range between $40,962 and $70,908.
Tanker captains pilot the container vessels hauling oil and gas from offshore rigs into port facilities on the mainland. The captain plots the most direct, yet safest, route between the port facility and the offshore rig. This plot can sometimes change due to weather conditions, new hazards, such as shipwrecks, or offshore construction. Once in port, the captain oversees the unloading of the ship"s cargo, as well as the filing of all appropriate paperwork as necessary.
Offshore oil rig companies call on completion workers, also known as workover staff, when there is a problem with an active well. These problems can be production issues, such as a pipe that collapsed due to external stress or age and halted oil production, or upgrade issues, such as when a wide pipe needs to be substituted for a narrower one as oil production decreases over the life of a well. Completion workers work underneath a completion engineer who decides on the best course of action to resume production.
The main task of drilling consultants is to oversee the daily operations of the rig. When needed, they put in orders for new supplies and equipment and maintain the right number of workers at any given time for the rig. Drilling consultants on the rig work with supervisors and other staff on shore to maximize rig production.
In January 2021, Payscale reported that the average offshore drilling salary for an engineer consultant was $126,680. Drilling consultants are some of the best-paid offshore jobs. Salaries can exceed $300,000.
