Working on an offshore oil rig can net you a pretty hefty income, but the work is anything but easy and can sometimes be hazardous. After hiring on to a rig, you"re put into a rotation where you"ll typically work two or three weeks on the rig and then three weeks back on shore. While on the rig, you"re expected to work every day and, for some positions, always be on call.

The main task of a rig electrician is to maintain and install the various electrical equipment found on an offshore oil rig. Tanker captains pilot the container vessels hauling oil and gas from offshore rigs into port facilities on the mainland. The captain plots the most direct, yet safest, route between the port facility and the offshore rig. This plot can sometimes change due to weather conditions, new hazards, such as shipwrecks, or offshore construction. Once in port, the captain oversees the unloading of the ship"s cargo, as well as the filing of all appropriate paperwork as necessary.

Offshore oil rig companies call on completion workers, also known as workover staff, when there is a problem with an active well. These problems can be production issues, such as a pipe that collapsed due to external stress or age and halted oil production, or upgrade issues, such as when a wide pipe needs to be substituted for a narrower one as oil production decreases over the life of a well. Completion workers work underneath a completion engineer who decides on the best course of action to resume production.

The main task of drilling consultants is to oversee the daily operations of the rig. When needed, they put in orders for new supplies and equipment and maintain the right number of workers at any given time for the rig. Drilling consultants on the rig work with supervisors and other staff on shore to maximize rig production.

In January 2021, Payscale reported that the average offshore drilling salary for an engineer consultant was ​$126,680​. Drilling consultants are some of the best-paid offshore jobs. Salaries can exceed ​$300,000​.
