It’s perfectly understandable that you like the Florida Gators (it’s a little less understandable if you’re an FSU fan but to each their own…). Please don’t buy a power tool just because it’s blue and orange. That’s just dye in the tool plastic and it won’t do anything for the performance and durability.

Cordless tools are incredibly convenient and make many projects easier. You don’t need everything to be cordless, though. When you’re looking at miter saws, table saws, high-power grinders, and other tools, don’t be afraid to buy corded or pneumatic. While professional tradesmen often gain a great benefit from cutting the cord, most DIYers and occasional users are better off spending the money to get a more refined corded version.

Consider what you need your tools to do. If you’re going to remodel and do your own plumbing rough-in, a 12V drill isn’t going to run a 2 9/16-inch self-feed bit through studs. Make sure you’re buying the right tool with high enough performance for the job.

On the other hand, that same 12V drill we just talked about is great for a wide range of projects around your home and for lighter professional work. Even our Pro team prefers to use lighter, more compact tools whenever they can. While you need to make sure you have enough performance, you don’t always need the biggest or strongest one available.

There are some outstanding warranty programs out there. Brands such as Flex and Milwaukee offer 5 years, Ridgid has a lifetime service agreement, and Metabo HPT has a lifetime warranty on their lithium-ion tools… but you need to register them to get the warranty service in most cases. Many registrations are online now. If you need to send in your reciept, be sure to take a photo of it first, just in case.

Many major power tool brands sell on Amazon and you can get some excellent deals on quality tools. Not all great brands sell through the online giant, though. Ryobi and Ridgid are Home Depot exclusives, Hart is a Walmart exclusive, and brands such as Stihl retail only through their dealer network.

Additionally, Amazon prices are constantly changing. Before you complete your purchase, check Acme Tools, Home Depot, Lowe’s, Ohio Power Tool, or other reputable retailers to see if they have a better price.

If you’re looking at buying into a cordless system, make sure it has all of the power tools you anticipate you’re going to need. Some lines cover a few core tools and that’s it. There’s nothing wrong with having multiple brands, but the more you can stay on one platform, the less you need to spend on additional batteries and the more convenient your tools are to work with.

We group tools into 3 main categories: DIY, prosumer, and professional to help you understand where it fits. Try to use a Black and Decker impact driver on a commercial jobsite and it’s going to hinder your progress. It’s a DIY tool. If you put that same tool in the hands of a homeowner with a few repairs to make and it’s a fantastic fit.

You can’t do any project without tools, but which tools do you really need? There’s a specialty tool for every task, but you don’t need every tool in the store to begin tackling projects. A smart strategy is to match the tool to the job at hand and fill your toolbox over time.

For any given tool, you’re likely to find a broad price range that usually equates with quality. It’s usually best to look in the middle of that range, buying tools that will let you do good work without breaking the bank. Also, consider how often you’re likely to use a particular tool. It’s worth buying a better version of something you’ll use every week than one you break out only occasionally. And keep in mind that many expensive or specialty tools can be rented.

Two important pieces of safety gear often go without mention. The first is your own mind—if something feels unsafe, it probably is. Find another way. The second is the instruction manual for the power tool you’re about to use–read it!

The most obvious body parts that need protection are your eyes. Wear safety glasses whenever using a power tool or any hand tool, such as a hammer, that might send something flying. Look for safety glasses that meet the ANSI Z-87 standard. Full face shields are called for whenever using a grinder.

For lawn care, start with a mower. Reel mowers are great for small yards, cordless electric mowers are great and trouble-free for larger areas, and a gas-powered push or riding mower is best used in large yards. You may also want a broadcast spreader for fertilizer.

Power saws are eclipsing handsaws, but a Japanese-style “pull saw” with a replaceable blade is still very useful, and a cordless jigsaw lets you cut curves, as well as making straight cuts. Circular saws are better and faster at straight cuts, especially in framing lumber and other thick material. With cordless tools, stick with one brand so that the batteries are interchangeable.

For framing, a rafter square is crucial for layout, along with a chalkline. Finally, impact drivers have all but replaced cordless drills for driving screws and lag bolts. The power these small tools deliver is impressive.

Once you have a basic toolkit with screwdrivers and a cordless drill, you’re well on your way. The first specialty electrical tool to buy is a circuit tester so you can be sure the power is off.

As with electrical work, the basic toolkit already has many of the tools you’ll need for plumbing. The most used household plumber’s tool is a toilet plunger. And those cheap, barbed plastic drain snakes do a great job pulling hair from clogged showers.

If you’d have told me years ago I would be writing a Power Tools 101 blog post, I would have laughed in your face. Aside from holding a power drill, I’d never been anywhere near a power tool!

It was in 2013 at a DIY (do-it-yourself) blogging conference in Atlanta. Not only was I excited to be there because (hellllooooo!) it was a trip away from home with fellow bloggers, but because there were–gasp–power tools workshops!

I fell in love with power tools and have never looked back! I love to use power tools to upcycle, repurpose, and refinish my second-hand thrifted finds!

In today’s post, for those of you who have been wanting to learn to use power tools, this post will give you the resources and encouragement to at least use your first power tool so you, too, can feel like a total DIY badass!

I’ve always thought of some power tools as less intimidating than others. So I always recommend newbie power tools users to start with a jigsaw first (in addition to a power drill, which you’ll read about later.).

It’s my go-to power tool when I need to make quick easy little cuts for thin materials, like if I’m making wood crafts, such as my Wooden DIY Journal (which make great DIY gifts, by the way!) and when I used it to cut a thin sheet of galvanized metal to make a sign.

You might think they cost a lot, but jig saws are one of the most affordable power tools. You can buy a jigsaw (without the battery) for about $60. Be sure to pick up a 2-pack of 18-Volt Compact Lithium Plus batteries and a charging kit. You can use these batteries in over 70 RYOBI tools, so they’re a good investment!

The miter saw is what I like to call “The Big Daddy” of power tools! LOL. It’s a large table-top saw and it’s what I recommend people use after they’ve gotten a feel for the smaller tools, like the jig saw and circular saw. Once you’ve mastered those and feel confident, then it’s time for the miter saw!

Out of all the power tools listed here, this one is the most expensive. The prices range, depending on the type of miter saw you get ($119 – $199 for a 10″ compound or sliding miter saw versus $249 for a 12″ sliding compound miter saw). Just depends on how much power you need and what size boards you plan to cut (TIP: You can cut wider boards up to 13.25″ with the larger 12″ sliding miter saw).

This is one of my favorite power tools because you can make so many things with it! If you didn’t have a saw and just had The Home Depot cut pieces of wood for you, you’d still need a way to nail it all together, wouldn’t you? That’s where the brad nailer comes in. You can make countless crafts with it, too, along with putting up decorative molding around your home!

Decorative wall molding. Brad nailers are awesome for easily securing decorative wall trim! Along with some Liquid Nails on the back of your wall trim and using your brad nailer with 18 gauge nails, you can create some visual interest in any room! In my pretty gray stenciled half bathroom makeover, I used 1 x 3 boards to break up the wall with stencils on top (using my favorite stencil), and then painting below the trim in a solid white. (NOTE: The crown molding was installed with a finish nailer which uses 16 gauge nails. Don’t get these two tools confused. Finish nailers use 16-gauge nailes, which are bigger and are designed for crown molding).

You can get the 18-Volt ONE+ AirStrike brad nailer (it’s cordless!!) for $119, but be sure to pick up some batteries, like I mentioned for the other tools. With all the projects you can do around the home, including crafting projects, it’s worth it!

Pilot holes. Hanging some curtains? How about wall art or shelving? Most things hung on your walls will need screws with anchors. Some anchors require you to drill a little pilot hole first, like in the above video, so that you can add a little anchor to help the drywall withstand the weight. That’s where power drills come in handy!

Projects with screws! Above I mentioned using a brad nailer to secure things together. Well, you can also use power drills to screw pieces of wood together with various types of screws. It just depends on the project and the materials you’re working with!

The power drill is another tool that costs next to nothing. It’s $69 at The Home Depot, and this one comes with a battery and charger, so it’s a good deal.

need them, but they’re super nice to have and allow you to get creative with a power drill! You just attach it to the end of your drill, and it’s got super MONSTER teeth, and it just tears through the wood, leaving a nice, neat hole!
