PDF tools aren’t scarce these days and whatever you want to do with a PDF document, there’s most likely a tool out there that you can use. @JoBrad: All the tools recommended here (primopdf, cutepdf, pdfforge etc.) have the basic capabilities that satisfy pretty much any day to day need. If you are in to professional printing or need to control the layout very tightly, my suggestion would be to try one of the commercial apps like acrobat. They are lot more flexible and provide good support.

Are the images bad on screen, or also in print? I had a project that printed various charts from PowerPoint and Excel to PDF using one of the many free PDF printer drivers. They all embed a bitmap based on the screen resolution for viewing on screen, which does not support PS. But when printed on PS printer, the low-res bitmap is ignored and the detailed underlying graphic is output.

@Annika.. this sounds like a strange bug. Are the graphics and pictures looking fine in the print preview ? I am not sure if the problem is with excel alone. May be you can try converting a word doc to pdf using these tools and see if you get the blue screen. If that is the case, you may want to uninstall these programs and try some other add-in.

For example, if you are in Powerpoint and have deck that navigates using hyperlinks to other slides within the deck and save as a pdf, the navigation will work in the pdf. ( I am using the Microsoft Office Professional 2010 and latest Adobe Acrobat Professional). However, if you have an Excel file with hyperlink navigation within the file and save as pdf then it will not work in the pdf file.

Doro PDF Writer by CompSoftDoro PDF Writer is very easy to use and is pretty straightforward. It doesn’t have all the other options that other PDF tools have but it works great in printing PDF files. It is installed as a virtual print driver and converts any printable document or image to PDF format. It can be powerful too as it lets you set the author name and even protect it with a password before conversion. Just select it from the program’s setting menu before printing a PDF document and it will launch and provide you the option to change the document’s metadata. On top of those mentioned is the ability to enable and disable copying, pasting and printing functions of the document. It is compatible with XP, Vista, Windows 7 and 8.

PDFill PDF ToolThis is probably one of the most user-friendly free PDF tools that offer you so many features.
