Noise from power tools and equipment (including electric, battery operated and pneumatic tools) that can be heard in any habitable rooms of a neighbouring residence must cease during certain times: 8pm to 8am on Sundays and public holidays, and 8pm to 7am on weekdays and Saturdays.
Local councils, police and courts have the authority to control offensive noise caused by any article at any time. This includes power tools used during the times they are permitted to be audible by the Noise Control Regulation and other tools such as hammers.
COMMERCIAL POWER EQUIPMENT – All engine- or motor-powered equipment intended for infrequent service work in inhabited areas, typically requiring commercial or skilled operators. (Examples of “commercial power equipment” are log chippers, paving rollers, etc.).
DOMESTIC POWER EQUIPMENT – Electrical, battery or generator powered equipment intended for use in residential areas by a homeowner. (Examples include but are not limited to chain saws, log splitters, power saws, drills, grinders, lawn and garden tools.)
(1) Daytime threshold: During daytime hours, no person or persons owning, leasing or controlling the operations of any source or sources of noise shall willfully, negligently or through failure to provide necessary muffler equipment or facilities or through failure to take necessary precautions make or permit any continuous, intermittent, recurring, scheduled or seasonal activity which generates noise from a building, device, explosive, machine, commercial power equipment, construction device, recreation vehicle, motor vehicle or any other man-made source, if that noise, when recorded at a distance of fifty (50) feet from its source, exceeds levels shown in Table 1 for the applicable land use in the appropriate Zoning District. In addition, no person shall engage in any continuous, intermittent, recurring, scheduled or seasonal activity which generates noise from a building, device, explosive, machine, vehicle or any other man-made source if that noise is exceeds or is likely to exceed normal background noise levels by more than ten (10) dBA.

(7) Noise from domestic power equipment operated between the hours of 7:00 am. and 7:00 p.m. weekdays, and on Saturdays, Sundays and legal holidays between the hours of 9:00 am. and 7:00 p.m.
When you want to begin a construction project of any kind, it’s very important that youunderstand what the construction and demolition hours should be. These hours are very specific. If you happen to violate the noise ordinance guidelines in regards to acceptable construction hours, you would likely be required to pay substantial fees for the violation. When it comes to construction work in Los Angeles, the operation of equipment or tools that are used for construction, demolition, alteration, or repair work is prohibited between the hours of 7PM and 7AM. It’s also important to note that construction work isn’t allowed at all on Sundays and holidays.
If you operate any construction equipment or tools during the restricted hours, fees could be levied. For the initial violation, a notice of violation will be provided to you, which specifies how long you have to reduce noise levels and comply with noise ordinance guidelines in Los Angeles. If you correct these problems immediately after you receive the violation notice, no further action will be taken.
Within Salem-Keizer Urban Growth Boundary: it is unlawful to create any noise disturbance or sound plainly audible within any dwelling unit other than the source between 10:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. the following day. The following are noise disturbances: dynamic braking devices, idling engines more than 15 consecutive minutes between 10:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. and motor vehicle repair and testing during the same time period, steam whistles, and sirens. Generally, maximum sound levels are 55 dBA during the day and 45 dBA at night for residential or noise sensitive areas. Commercial areas are allowed 60 dBA during the day and 55 at night; industrial areas are allowed 65 dBA during the day and 60 dBA at night, with certain exceptions for domestic power equipment, commercial construction, etc.
Non-fixed domestic machinery (i.e lawn mowers, power tools, etc)Typically used for short period, and must not emit continuous noise. Must not exceed 60 dB(A) between 9am-8pm on Sundays, or between 8am-8pm on all other days. It is not permitted to use this type of equipment outside the permitted times.

The Environment Protection (Residential Noise) Regulations 2018 cover specific sources of noise. Listed in the Regulations are Prescribed items, ranging from electric power tools, lawn mowers through to air conditioners. The Regulations also list the prohibited times for these prescribed items.
It should be noted that work which does not create unreasonable noise is permitted outside these times as are other activities such as workers arriving at site and unloading material or tools provided they are not creating excessive noise.
Residential equipment can be used between 7am to 7pm Monday to Saturday and 9am to 7pm Sundays/public holidays. Lawnmowers, chainsaws, power tools etc can be used for a maximum of two hours in any day. Musical instruments can be used for a maximum of one hour in any day. However, use of equipment must still be reasonable.
Police have the power to gain entry and deactivate house or car alarms if they have been emitting unreasonable noise for more than 30 minutes. Please contact the Police on 131 444.

The City of Alexandria cannot regulate train noise due to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) regulations (Sec. 11-5-6-6, 8). In general, homeowners can conduct general construction work in the same permitted hours as those for power lawn and garden equipment.
