I shop at both major big-box retailers, and typically pick one over the others depending on what I’m looking to buy. If both offer the same tools or supplies at similar prices, I prefer Home Depot.

Which vendors would you add to this list? This isn’t an exhaustive list of where I purchase new tools from – the above list reflects where I shop and spend the most.

ToolGuyd has affiliate/referral relationships with many of these retailers, but I have also been buying our own tools and supplies from them for many years, and strongly recommend them without hesitation.

We often are asked for sources for American made tools. It makes sense that workers and homeowners alike would want to buy tools made in the USA. This is our list of tool brands you should seek to build your American Made toolbox.

Our USA Love List editors are always on the look-out for tools made in USA. We search tool websites, where we read company information and brand descriptions. We search the shelves at big box stores and read tool packaging.

This list of American Made Tools was originally started in 2014. Sadly, over the years we have removed many companies. However, we still have a lot of companies on our list that have been manufacturing tools in the states for over 100 years. We also have found several companies that manufacture most of their tools overseas, but have some made here. We have included these companies

Please note: Many of the companies that are listed below also manufacture tools in other countries. We always support any effort a company makes to keep American jobs. Please read labels carefully.

Bully Tools garden and yard tools, including rakes, shovels, cultivating tools, digging tools and more are made in Ohio. Shop the Bully Tools Amazon shop.

There’s a lot of confusion surrounding any manufacturing in China, and where there’s confusion, there are also misconceptions. To clear up some of this, we wanted to understand a bit more about the history of Chervon. Chervon, based on China with facilities worldwide, manufactures power tools internationally. They have manufacturing plants in Nanjing, China as well as Stuttgart, Germany. They also have sales and marketing offices all over the US, Europe, Australia, Germany, and China.

We also got a much more personal look at a company that’s trying to do it right—both in terms of process and also the environment. That’s a lot to swallow, and so we’ve got more than one article on the company and its processes. This article introduces this China-based international power tool manufacturer and what we’ve come to understand about them.

Asking the question “Why can’t we do it this way?”, describes a lot of the history of Chervon. By doing this repeatedly, the company was able to focus on doing the work of power tool manufacturing better and more efficiently. As China began building itself up from almost nothing, Chervon paralleled this in its own development. They grew little by little as a trading business (buying and selling components and products).

Chervon decided to do its own testing. They made investments into the tools needed to test their products. That led to them being able to learn how to locate problems, but they still had to rely on the factories to solve them. Shortly after this, they began hiring teams of people to focus on R&D and to design specific machines.

By 2000, the company made many of their own products and did it better than many other manufacturers. Chervon now holds a spot as one of the top 10 manufacturers of power tools in the world. Their products are sold by over 30,000 stores in 65 countries. Chervon manufactures products for several well-known manufacturing brands as well as their own house brands: EGO and Devon. Not bad for a company that’s only been around since 1993.

Throughout the history of Chervon, the company manufactured plenty of OEM products. They also do quite a lot of ODM manufacturing as well. That includes manufacturing for popular brands sold in Lowe’s, The Home Depot, and Menards. Simultaneously, Chervon is keen to make their own brands. They have a particular interest and excitement about selling their own products to Chinese people in their own country. This actually brought about the Devon line of tools.

The level of manufacturing Chervon engages in is commensurate with Bosch, Makita, and Milwaukee. In fact, they’ve made tools for some of those companies at one point or another as an OEM manufacturer. Tool manufacturing in China is a 1.2 billion dollar market. The OPE (outdoor power equipment) sector is currently dominated by the European and American markets.

This is where Chervon has really stepped up its game in the past few years. The company has quickly gained recognition in business-to-business markets. Now, it has turned its sights on name recognition in the consumer market. Three years ago, Chervon acquired Flex, a German power tool company. In 2014 they debuted the EGO 56V cordless OPE line of tools and a strong move into outdoor power equipment.

The EGO name and brand stands for the move into OPE which is driven by engines and connecting those to applications for lawnmowers and handheld OPE power tools. As Chervon looked for growth areas, they recognized OPE had different manufactures. They weren’t making use of some of the strengths and advantages found in the cordless power tool industry. When Chervon, the largest ODM manufacturer in the power tool industry took a look at the OPE market, they saw a great opportunity. More than just the financial and manufacturing opportunities, Chervon saw an opportunity to bring about some of the environmental advantages cordless OPE technology would offer to the world in general.

The EGO brand was really Chervon’s big move into a self-branded suite of power tools. Other companies express an interest in replacing corded tools. Peter Pan, Chervon president, truly believes lithium-ion can, one day, almost entirely replace the gasoline engine. Based on how well the EGO Powerload 15-inch string trimmer and EGO Select Cut lawnmower are doing, it looks like tools once thought to require gas are well on their way to becoming battery-driven mainstream solutions.

Ryobi power tools seem to be everywhere – it’s a favorite brand of homeowners and DIYers (including me!), and the signature green/yellow is hard notto see it in nearly every home/DIY influencer’s Instagram posts. But why is Ryobi so popular? Why is this specific brand of power tools seemingly everywhere?

Ryobi is popular because it balances price and reliability, and the brand sells a huge range of products. The power tools are especially popular because of the 18V One+ battery system – allowing a DIYer to use one battery for hundreds of different tools.

But that’s not the whole story. If you’re thinking of starting or streamlining a cordless power tool collection, you’ll want to know all the ins and outs before you invest hundreds of dollars in a brand. Below, I’ll cover where Ryobi tools are sold, whether they’re geared towards DIYers or professional contractors, what kind of products Ryobi sells, their longevity and reliability, who owns Ryobi, and how Ryobi compares to other brands.

Ryobi tools are sold exclusively at The Home Depot, so if you’re thinking of buying into the brand, you’ll want to make sure a Home Depot is close by. There are resellers on Amazon, but they are not first-party so your mileage may vary.

I’ve found that close to new launches, stock can be hard to come by in-store at Home Depot, so it’s always good to order ahead. The same can be said if you are looking for a specific tool – many, many tools are sold each day, and often things get moved around. I’ve never regretted opting for curbside pickup, especially with little ones in tow.

Many people assume that since Ryobi is a Home Depot exclusive brand that Ryobi is Home Depot’s in-house line of power tools. In reality, Husky and HDX are Home Depot’s in-house brands, and Ryobi is just sold there.

Generally, Ryobi is marketed towards the DIYer or homeowner, but some professionals use Ryobi tools as well thanks to their massive variety of products, warranties, and fair prices. That being said, most contractors that have come to work in my home are using Ryobi for specialty tools, and not their ‘bread and butter’ drills and such.

Ryobi is plenty rugged and durable for a homeowner or casual DIYer – I’m certainly not gentle with my tools, and every single one of my Ryobi products (save for a sander that was overused – more on that later) has stood the test of time.

One of my favorite things about Ryobi is the versatility of the batteries – they can be used with hundreds of tools and accessories. It’s actually one of the reasons I chose to invest in Ryobi in the first place. Batteries are one of the most expensive parts of owning cordless tools, and not having to purchase multiple kinds keeps costs down.

The Ryobi 18V One+ Cordless line (what most of my tools are) includes over 225 tools that can all be powered by the same battery, from drills to saws, and much more. I started with the 18-Volt ONE+ 6-Tool Combo Kit, but have bought many, many tools from Ryobi since then.

Within the 18V One+ line are brushless tools – think of them as a premium version with more specific and advanced build quality and techniques. They’re more expensive but should last longer. I tend to only jump for the brushless when it’s a tool I know I’m going to be using a LOT.

Ryobi recently came out with a more powerful tool line – 40V cordless. These are your blowers, chain saws, hedge trimmers, etc. They even have lawnmowers.

I actually purchased a different outdoor tools line (that I’ve been incredibly unhappy with) before Ryobi offered many outdoor tools…but I will upgrade to their outdoor tools someday! Ryobi offers tools in the following categories in their 40V system:

If you’re looking for a great tool at a lower cost, Ryobi also has a great selection of corded tools. My first miter saw was a corded Ryobi model, and it was the sole reason we were able to lay over 1,000 square feet of flooring ourselves. My table saw is another corded tool from Ryobi that I’ve been incredibly happy with.

In researching this article, I knew I wanted to come at it from more than just my perspective. While I’ve owned Ryobi tools for 7 years now, my experience alone is not enough to judge a brand by. I came across some of the following sentiments during my research:

Everyone I know that owns Ryobi tools loves them, and in general, they aren’t prone to breaking. That being said…they are not super high-end tools meant to last generations.

All Ryobi 18V One+ Portable Power Tools, Bench/Stationary, Outdoor Power Equipment, Batteries and Chargers are covered by a 3-year limited warranty. I’ve never gone through a warranty replacement, but the general consensus online is that Ryobi is quite good at honoring the warranty.

All Ryobi 40V Lithium-Ion Outdoor Tools are covered by a 5-year limited warranty, and all RYOBI 40V Lithium-Ion Outdoor Batteries and Chargers are covered by a 3-Year Limited Warranty.

This massive group of brands is actually pretty common in the tool market – many people just don’t know that they’re all part of one huge corporation. So, if you’ve heard certain things about Milwaukee, and other things about Ryobi, take each with a grain of salt – both ultimately answer to the same powers.

Finding actual manufacturing data was pretty hard, but as near as I can tell, most Ryobi tools are made in China, with some being assembled in Indiana. In other words, Ryobi is not an American-made brand. The trade-off for lower prices is that the tools are assembled in China – but that’s something nearly every brand is facing these days.

If you only want to use one tool brand, and you earn your living with your tools, it’s probably smart to invest in another more pro-focused brand. But if you are a homeowner, renter, or DIY enthusiast like me, Ryobi is a great brand. To learn more, I’ve compared most of the major brands below.

Black and Decker (now Stanley Black and Decker as of 2010), is part of the same company that owns Craftsman, DeWalt, and many others. Both Black and Decker and Ryobi produce their tools primarily in China, and they are very competitive in price. The general consensus is that Ryobi will give you higher quality tools with much better warranties, and a better overall product selection, too.

Both Bosch and Ryobi offer quality tools at good prices, and typically market their products toward homeowners and DIYers, but Ryobi definitely takes the lead in terms of warranties. They both offer a ton of different power tools, though Ryobi has more in terms of outdoor equipment for lawn and garden.

Both Ryobi and Craftsman manufacture mid-grade tools at mid-level prices. Ryobi offers better warranties on power tools, but Craftsman offers great warranties on mechanic tools, hand tools, and more. Craftsman manufactures a more diverse line of products in terms of automotive tools, outdoor equipment, and storage gear, while Ryobi has a larger and more varied selection of tools across a bunch of different industries.

Overall, DeWalt offers better warranties across the board than Ryobi. DeWalt also produces a wider range of products, including things like work gear, clothing, and hand tools, that Ryobi doesn’t produce as much of. Ryobi does produce a lot more outdoor equipment than DeWalt. DeWalt’s products are generally higher quality with a higher price to match.

Many people in my family absolutely LOVE DeWalt, and I can see why – they’re a fantastic brand. That being said, I tend to only upgrade to DeWalt when it’s a heavy-duty, mission-critical kind of tool – like a hammer drill. And even then, I go with the corded model for more power. Otherwise, Ryobi is plenty for me!

Both Kobalt and Ryobi are reputed for their quality products with great warranties for their power tools. The comparison really depends on what you are looking for – anecdotally, I’ve had far more trouble with Kobalt tools than I have with Ryobi. That’s just one person’s opinion though, so take it with a grain of salt!

Makita offers higher quality products with warranties comparable to Ryobi’s at a higher price point, with the difference in these products lying in their quality and target market. DIYers and homeowners will likely find they can get all they need with Ryobi tools, while professionals may wish to choose the higher-end Makita tools. If your livelihood depends on your tools, Makita is a great brand, but if you’re just casually using them, Ryobi is the way to go.

Both Ryobi and Milwaukee are owned by parent company Techtronic Industries. Milwaukee products, in particular their cordless products, are known to have very long runtimes, high levels of durability, and a wide variety of features. Milwaukee tools are great for professionals who need reliable and high-quality tools for heavy-duty, daily use. Ryobi is more suited for homeowners and DIYers who are looking for a more affordable option.

In this infographic, the size of each company’s hand & power tool revenue is shown by circle area. Stanley Black & Decker is inside the biggest circle because it has the largest revenue from hand & power tools. Close behind is Bosch’s hand and power tool business. And so on until we reach Positec, JPW Industries and Ingersoll Rand with the smaller circles representing their smaller respective revenues.

Statista.com is a data analysis website that has a wide range of free and premium industry reports, statistics and analysis. The most interesting tidbit we found investigating hand and power tools is this:

Most of the companies (who make and who own tool brands) sales figures are available in tax forms and company annual reports. But even with that information some estimations have to be made to arrive at the tools only sales numbers. Here are some notes how we arrived at estimations for the following companies.

The Bosch annual report tells us their Consumer Goods division had 17.1 billion euros revenue (~18.5 billion USD) in 2015. The division consists of power tools (drills, jigsaws, impact screwdrivers, lawn mowers, best pressure washers etc.) and household appliances (fridges, washing machines, dryers, ovens etc.).

The household appliances portion of the Bosch Consumer Goods division was a 50:50 joint venture with Siemens until Bosch bought out Siemens for 3 billion euros (~3.25 billion USD) in late 2014. That was for the 50% share that Siemens owned, valuing the total household appliance company at 6 billion euros (6.5 billion USD). The company reported 10.5 billion euros revenue in 2013. So what’s the 2015 revenue to give us the portion that is power tools? With a growth rate of 4% yearly the revenue is 11.36 billion euros in 2015 leaving 5.74 billion euros (~$6.2B USD) as power tools revenue.

You’ll notice there is an ‘Other’ row in the above table. In that row are Home Depot, Lowe’s and Harbor Freight Tools. Since these companies don’t manufacture their own tools they were not included in the above infographic. However, they still collect substantial revenues from the global tool market with their home brand tools – Husky, Kobalt and US General, for example.

Looking at Home Depot and Lowe’s, we estimated both companies are collecting around $500M for home brands and $4.5B from selling other companies brands on their shelves. This estimate came from looking at their online stores portion of products that are home brand vs. external brands in the tools & hardware categories. When you include cost to purchase the home brand tools from the OEM and the consignment cost of the external brands’ tools, the cut they get of the total is probably around 30%. That gives Home Depot and Lowe’s somewhere close to $1.5B in global tool market revenue each. And leaves Harbor Freight around the same.

In this graphic, the outer rectangles contain logos of brands owned by the parent companies in the middle. Not all brands owned by the parent companies are in the rectangle – just the most well-known. Hilti and Makita only sell tools under their own names. Take a look. What brands owned by parent companies surprise you?

The Home Depot, Lowe’s and Harbor Freight are not original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) or original design manufacturers (ODMs). They are purchasing companies who form partnerships with OEMs and ODMs (like Stanley Black & Decker) to get their tools made for them to distribute under their own brand names.

In many tool categories these big-box hardware stores simply buy from an OEM and slap their Husky, Kobalt or Drillmaster stickers on the product for sale. In other categories, they approach ODMs with specific product specifications and then work with them to get the tool built to their specs. Exactly which categories of Husky, Kobalt and Harbor Freight tools are ODM or OEM is impossible to find in their tax documents or annual reports.

Bosch’s Consumer Goods division sells power tools and household appliances. They own many brands in both industries. Their Global HQ is in Gerlingen, Germany. It is 9km west of Stuttgart.

Fortive Corp. spun out from Danaher Corp. in 2016 to become its own company. It is foremely the Tools & Measurement division of Danaher. It operates out of the Fluke Corp. headquarters in Everett, Washington.

Hilti is still a family owned company based in Schaan, Lichtenstein. They are known for their professional tools and are very popular throughout the world. Hilti has more than 23,000 employees.

Makita is a large power tool manufacturing company based in Anjo, Japan. They are well-known for their rechargeable power tools and were the first to produce a rechargeable drill. They introduced it in 1969.

Snap-on is best known as the company / tool brand that visits you at work with a van full of tools for you to buy. They started as a socket wrench company and now offer a wide-range of tools for professionals in the automotive, aviation, marine and railroad industries. The Snap-on Global HQ is in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Emerson Electric is a massive company with a sizeable tools business. They are best known for their process-automation products and services (valves, regulators, measurement & analytical instruments). The Emerson Global HQ is in Ferguson, Missouri.

Harbour Freight buys their tools direct from manufacturer and then offer them as home brands for affordable prices. Here is a selection of the brands they own and sell under:

Hitachi Koki operates as a subsidiary to Hitachi, Ltd. Hitachi Koki manufactures and sells power tools and power equipment. It has HQ in Tokyo, Japan.

Textron is a diversified manufacturer in aircraft, industrial and automotive products. Within their industrial segment they make tools and equipment and sell them under the brands shown here:

The Home Depot owns two home brands in the tools category. They also exclusively sell brands of power tools and equipment such as Ryobi and WORX. Overall, they have sales of hand and power tool/equipment over $5 billion per year.

Ideal Industries is based out of Sycamore, Illinois. Ideal Industries is now well-known for their Pratt-Read, Western Forge brands and SK Tools brands, which they acquired in three separate deals in 2010. It is rumoured they paid ~$50 million for Western Forge and a fair bit less for Pratt-Read.

JPW Industries is based out of La Vergne Tennessee. It was originally known as Walter Meirer Manufacturing, Inc., and represented the tools arm of Swiss based Walter Meier AG. In 2013, Tenex Capital Management purchased Walter Meirer Manufacturing, Inc. and named it JPW Industries to represent the three main brands – JET, Powermatic and Wilton.

Who makes Ryobi tools? Techtronic Industries (TTi) is the OEM for Ryobi. TTi owns the Ryobi brand of power tools in North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. They are sold exclusively at The Home Depot in United States. Ryobi Limited, which sold the power tools businesses to TTi in 2000/2001, is a Japanese company that sells power tools, die castings, hardware and printing equipment in Asia, Latin America, Middle East and Africa

Who makes Kobalt tools? Chervon the Chinese OEM (not Chevron the oil company) makes many of Kobalt’s power tools. In 2016, Lowe’s awarded them a vendor award in innovation for the Kobalt 24-Volt cordless power tools. Everybody loves "Made in the U.S.A." Politicians like Donald Trump campaign on it, promising to bring back jobs to America. Buyers see it as a sign of quality, especially in tools. But you probably know the other side of the story, too. It costs more to make things in America, and lots of shoppers don"t put their money where their mouth is, opting for the cheaper product when it"s time to part with their hard-earned cash.

U.S. tool companies realized the value of producing or assembling tools and products in America. A tool"s reputation carries a lot of weight, and once that reputation is tarnished it"s tough to reverse, regardless of where it"s made. That"s why more and more power tool companies are walking a tight line with their manufacturing these days, creating some parts domestically but also sourcing from abroad and assembling their products in America.

For companies that make hand tools, the story is a little simpler. Estwing, Channellock, and Leatherman have been producing hand tools in the U.S. for years. "Made in the USA" is integral to their story and they are deeply ingrained in their communities. For power tools, though, it"s a little trickier.

DeWalt is among those that make many of their power tools in the U.S. using U.S. made components as well as globally sourced materials. This is a great way to keep costs in line and American workers employed. The trick is telling buyers that DeWalt"s global tools are manufactured and tested to the same high quality specifications as their made in the U.S. produced tools, something DeSimone swears by.

Stanley Black & Decker, DeWalt"s parent company, is dealing with the same issue with Craftsman tools, having recently made waves by acquiring the classic tool brand from Sears. Craftsman is one of the most iconic American companies in any industry, but its reputation for producing quality power tools has taken a hit in recent years. In a step towards reversing this, Stanley Black & Decker says it will focus on U.S. manufacturing for Craftsman using domestic and global materials, just as DeWalt does. There"s hope this will signal a turnaround for a beloved American brand.

Germany"s quality power tool makers are grappling with the same problem. Festool and Fein rank at or near the top of every builder"s wish lists, but they also outsource much of their production to other parts of Europe or Asia. These are considered premium brands, and have done a tremendous job maintaining quality control despite offshoring some of their production. Since they don"t compete on price, reputation is everything to them.

Stihl is German-owned and the number one outdoor power equipment manufacturer in the world. They have been committed to U.S. production for years and have their largest production facility in the world here in Virginia Beach, VA. Most of their products are German designed, but they produce 256 products right here in the U.S.

Tool companies trying to maintain their "Made in the USA" face competition from discount brands and retailers too, of course. Many continue to expand despite offering few products made in America. Savvy shoppers it seems, understand what tools they should pay a premium for and which tools they can cheap out on.

The bottom line is that high-quality tools can be made and assembled from countries around the world. Many of the companies that choose to manufacture in the U.S. believe in a strong American workforce and in the value added by placing the American flag on a product. Whether American shoppers reward them for that is an ongoing question.

Bauer Tools is a highly affordable tool brand for home owners and DIYers, though it doesn’t have as large of a following as some other brands. That’s because it is the house brand of Harbor Freight, meaning you must shop at that store exclusively to find Bauer Tools.

If you’re wondering who makes Bauer Tools, you’ve come to the right place. In this article, we answer everything you might want to know about the ownership and production of Bauer Tools. Though it was difficult to find specific answers to some basic questions about the brand, we hope this article sheds light on Bauer Tools.

Bauer Tools is the tool house brand for Harbor Freight. This is the fancy way of saying that it is sold exclusively through Harbor Freight stores and website. The store produces their Bauer Tools in factories that create other competing tools.

Dating back to 1977, Harbor Freight now offers around 7000 tools, some of which are in-house while others are not. The non-in-house tools are sourced directly from other manufacturers.

On their website, they explain that Bauer is just one of many Harbor Freight tool brands sold entirely from their website and store locations. It is actually quite difficult to find out exactly where Harbor Freights manufactures Bauer Tools.

We suspect this fact given that Bauer is an incredibly affordable option. Other Harbor Freight tools are 80% cheaper than leading competitors, meaning that they have to cut costs somewhere. Though we can’t say for certain where the manufacturing locations are for Bauer Tools, it is pretty easy to assume China or some other similar place.

Bauer Tools offers a variety of standard tools. Their categories are separated as drills, impact wrenches, saws, sanders, grinders, polishers, outdoor, shop, and lighting. Just as Harbor Freight promises, you can get these power tools for pretty cheap. Not to mention, their website has several pretty impressive coupons that you can use in-store to get an even cheaper tool.

Because of their affordability, Bauer Tools is not the most durable or long-lasting option. For its price, it certainly is an impressive tool. Most homeowners and DIYers will be completely satisfied with this product. Professionals, however, should opt for something more heavy-duty.

In summary, Bauer Tools is the in-house tool brand for Harbor Freight. Harbor Freight makes their Bauer Tools in factories of other leading tool brands, which leaves us to assume they mean non-USA-based areas. This allows Bauer Tools to be incredibly cheap, but you must shop for them online or at a Harbor Freight store.
